
The new five-year government plan 2027-2031 for the
development of Taiwan's international and domestic ports provides for
investments of 57.2 billion Taiwanese dollars (1.8 billion
of US dollars), including 47.7 billion to finance 34 projects in the
seven major international ports of Keelung, Taipei, Taichung,
Kaohsiung, Anping, Su-ao and Hualien and 9.5 billion for 73 projects
in the four national ports of Budai, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu.
Presenting the new plan today, the Minister of Transport and
Communications Minister, Chen Shih-Kai, specified that the first
The objective of the programme is to strengthen the capacity of the
container traffic in ports, in particular with
the modernization of the port's third and fifth container terminals
Kaohsiung to make them capable of accommodating 18,000 TEU ships
in 2027 and 24,000 TEU ships in 2029. Other investments will be
dedicated to the growth of cruise traffic in the port of
Keelung also through the provision of the areas of the former
Weihai military camp. Further investments will be allocated
the energy transition of ports and the introduction of
AI-based technologies.
The 2027-2031 plan provides that in the last year the traffic of the
Containers in Taiwanese ports will rise to 15.5 million TEUs,
while international passenger traffic will reach
1.4 million people.
