Today in London the workshop "Cold ironing, feeding the ports of the future" hosted by the Embassy of Italy in the United Kingdom in collaboration with Aon Spa/Aon Re and the law firm ADVANT-Nctm, to which they participated representatives of the marine cluster, delegates to the IMO of some important marine countries, insurers and investment funds specialized in infrastructures and during which they discussed the development of the activities of shore power, of the challenges
Particular attention was paid to investment opportunities, risk allocation and insurance solutions related to this complex energy transition. In this regard Giuseppe Spera, Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy at the IMO and moderator of the meeting, has evidenced as "the evolution of the ports in energy hub open important opportunities of investment, while requiring large capitals and a close cooperation between port authorities, shipowners and energy suppliers in the background of the European political initiatives and the IMO climate agenda. The success of the harbour electrification - it has found - is a challenge is a strategic opportunity. Its realization depends on the combination of a solid regulatory support, capital investments, technological innovation and effective risk management".
"An effective infrastructure - Alberto Rossi has observed of ADVANT-Nctm, also in his capacity as secretary general of Assarmatori - must take account of the legal and insurance aspects, first to avoid risks related to the so-called climate disputes. What would happen if the shipowner, whose ship is equipped with the "spina", could not supply himself with energy from the ground for lack or malfunction of the system? Who's the responsibility? The regulatory framework is wide and unfortunately not always univocal, moreover we are talking about a novelty, in which Italy has been able to move with farsightedness and with a significant investment. Discussing these aspects, and insurance ones, means putting potential investors in a view of greater awareness, thus helping the development of the country-system".
"With the systematic and concentrated diffusion of the systems of shore power - it has agreed Giorgio Moroni of Aon Spa - assumes an increasing importance the management of the operating risks connected to the connection of the ships to the terrestrial electric networks of high voltage, including malfunctions of the equipment, peaks of tension and potential fires. We have taken care to identify the necessary integrations and amendments to the responsibility covers available today to cover new potential risks, without the support of data and statistical experiences".
"We have been very focused - added Riccardo Barelli of AON Re - on the search for insurance skills from various markets to cope with the likely demand of ceilings important for the policy of liability of the dealers. The insurance sector plays a central role, to ensure the compatibility of the new system in every respect, protecting all operators from economic losses and consolidating confidence in the safety and effectiveness of cold ironing".
