Le ordinazioni di portacontainers raggiungono il livello più alto di tutti i tempi

Le ordinazioni di portacontainers hanno raggiunto il loro livello più alto in assoluto. Gli investimenti senza precedenti degli armatori e degli operatori di linea nel corso del 2003 verranno ricordati nei libri di storia come un record in termini di numero di nuove navi per containers ordinate. Al 1' ottobre 2003, il registro delle ordinazioni globale era attestato a 610 navi containerizzate, per una capacità complessiva in TEU pari a 2,4 milioni di unità. Qualcosa come 330 navi sono state ordinate nel corso del 2003, con una capacità combinata aggregata superiore agli 1,7 milioni di TEU. Per vedere ciò in prospettiva, l'attuale registro delle ordinazioni rappresenta il 38% della capacità della flotta containerizzata in esercizio.

Le massicce ordinazioni di navi post-Panamax sono state evidenti nel corso del 2003, con 227 navi ordinate con capacità superiore ai 5.000 TEU (v. Tabella 1). Ciò rappresentava il 37% delle ordinazioni complessive al 1' ottobre 2003. Molti dei principali vettori marittimi hanno optato per navi "super" post-Panamax da 7.500-8.500 TEU ed attualmente sono sotto ordinazione oltre 100 di queste navi. Quando alla fine saranno state consegnate da oggi al 2007, esse forniranno il tonnellaggio di base per i traffici transpacifico ed Asia/Europa. E' probabile che queste mega-navi vadano a rimpiazzare le navi da 5.500 a 6.500 TEU.

Le commesse relative a 144 portacontainers nel corso del 2003 con una capacità di slots aggregata di 556.448 TEU ha ampliato la flotta cellulare containerizzata sino a 6.428 milioni di TEU, con un incremento dell'8,9% rispetto agli ultimi 12 mesi. Questo dato è leggermente inferiore a quello del periodo 2002-2003, quando la flotta era aumentata in media del 10% annuo.

Secondo il broker Howe Robinson, la crescita della domanda di navi per containers era stata del 9% nel 2003. Dall'altro lato dell'equazione, l'offerta degli slots di bordo è aumentata dell'8,9% nel 2003 e ci si aspettava che raggiungesse il 7,5-8% nel 2004; queste cifre suggeriscono che la crescita futura dell'offerta e della domanda alla fine grosso modo si bilancerà. Sembra che i proprietari ed i vettori non si prendano rischi ed abbiano scelto di effettuare ordinazioni prevenendo di gran lunga la crescita prevista dei traffici nei prossimi anni. Ci si aspetta che molte delle navi più grandi sotto contratto non vengano consegnate fino al 2006/2007.

Le rottamazioni sono leggermente diminuite lo scorso anno. Complessivamente, al 1' ottobre 2003 erano state dismesse 55 navi containerizzate, con una riduzione di capacità di 46.200 TEU. La maggior parte delle navi che sono state inviate ai demolitori erano di tipo inferiore ai 1.000 TEU e presentavano un'età media di 27 anni, il che potrebbe suggerire una domanda di portacontainers feedermax (tra 500 e 999 TEU) nei prossimi anni. Attualmente, vi sono oltre 85 portacontainers feedermax sotto ordinazione. E' probabile che con l'introduzione delle mega-navi nel 2006 e 2007 ed i discorsi che si fanno circa navi ancora più grandi sino a 10.000 TEU, le navi di raccordo finiscano per diventare più importanti che mai.

Il mercato del noleggio è mutato notevolmente nel 2003. I proprietari hanno usufruito di un picco di sei anni delle tariffe giornaliere di noleggio delle portacontainers. Howe Robinson riferisce come l'indice di mercato per le tariffe di noleggio abbia anche portato ad un incremento del 150% tra il gennaio 2002 e l'ottobre 2003. L'incremento della domanda ha altresì indotto l'allungamento dei periodi di tempo di noleggio. E' adesso abbastanza normale per gli operatori fissare una portacontainers per un periodo fino a 36 mesi. Alcune delle nuove costruzioni già ordinate sono state fissate per periodi da 6 a 10 anni. Le portacontainers di medie dimensioni hanno assistito al maggiore incremento delle tariffe di noleggio ed è stato riferito che le navi da 3.500 TEU riescono ad ottenere tariffe che superano i 27.000 dollari al giorno.

Come ci si aspettava, la maggior parte delle navi sotto ordinazione saranno costruite nel nord-est asiatico. Molti cantieri navali in Corea del Sud, Giappone e Cina hanno raggiunto la soglia di capacità massima costruttiva e sono impegnati per i prossimi due/tre anni. Gli spazi nei cantieri vengono ora offerti con ultimazione e consegna alla fine del 2006 ed all'inizio del 2007. Ciò potrebbe rappresentare una buona notizia per i cantieri navali europei, dato che i proprietari ed i vettori potrebbero essere pronti a pagare cifre extra per consegne antecedenti il 2007.

La HHI (Hyundai Heavy Industries) e la sua società affiliata, la Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries detengono la quota maggiore dell'attuale registro delle ordinazioni, con oltre 100 portacontainers sotto contratto. In termini di capacità di costruzione, la HHI ha 534.724 TEU di ordini di costruzione. Di queste navi, 39 sono da 7.500 TEU ed oltre.

Gli armatori ed i finanziatori tedeschi hanno ordinato tonnellaggio post-Panamax per tutto il 2003. La Doehle (Peter Doehle Schiffahrts KG) attualmente ha 44 portacontainers sotto ordinazione. Un'altra società tedesca con inclinazione verso le portacontainers è la Offen (Reederei Claus-Peter Offen GMBH & Co). La società con sede ad Amburgo ha ora 33 portacontainers sotto ordinazione, gran parte delle quali sono navi post-Panamax. Infatti, il registro ordinazioni della Offen in relazione alle navi da oltre 8.000 TEU ha adesso raggiunto le 18 unità. La Offen ha effettuato le ordinazioni alla Hanjin Heavy Industries ed alla Samsung Heavy Industries; ciascuno dei due cantieri ha contratti per la costruzione di nove unità tra l'ottobre 2003 ed il 2007. E' stato riferito che almeno la metà di queste navi andranno alla MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Co) nel quadro di un accordo di noleggio a lungo termine.

In termini di capacità, non è sorprendente che i primi 20 vettori di containers del mondo controllino l'83,7% della flotta cellulare globale (v. Tabella 2).

Come ci si poteva attendere, la APMM (AP Moller-Maersk Group) resta il maggior vettore containerizzato. La APMM ora controlla 328 navi per contenitori con una capacità di oltre 844.000 TEU, con un incremento del 9,1% rispetto agli ultimi 12 mesi. La APMM attualmente dispone di 30 navi sotto ordinazione e si mormora che la compagnia di navigazione sia interessata all'ordinazione di navi da 10.000 TEU dalla propria filiale OSS (Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd).

Nel corso del mese di maggio del 2003, la Maersk Sealand e la Safmarine hanno effettuato ordinazioni alla OSS per 4 navi da 4.035 TEU. Le navi andranno ad aggregarsi al consorzio SAECS (South African Europe Container Service), che è composto da P&O Nedlloyd, DAL (Deutsche Africa-Linien Gmbh), Maersk Sealand e Safmarine. La DAL ha altresì stipulato un contratto con la OSS per costruire una nave identica destinata a rimpiazzare il tonnellaggio esistente da 3.000 TEU attualmente in servizio dal Nord Europa al Sudafrica. La Maersk Sealand ha inoltre un arretrato di ordinazioni di sei tipi "S" attualmente in costruzione presso la OSS. Queste navi container sono "ufficialmente" destinate ad accogliere 6.600 TEU; tuttavia, sia la Anna Maersk che la Axel Maersk, la cui consegna è avvenuta nel corso del 2003, sono lunghe 352 metri e larghe 42,8 metri. Queste dimensioni suggeriscono che la vera capacità sia realisticamente dell'ordine di 8.500-9.000 TEU. L'ultima delle tipo "S" dovrebbe essere consegnata alla fine del 2005 e sarà molto probabilmente dislocata nei traffici Asia/Europa.

Anche la MSC ha incrementato la propria flotta di portacontainers; la compagnia con sede a Ginevra ha aggiunto 34 navi nel 2003 e ciò rappresenta un massiccio aumento del 24,9% della capacità, attraverso l'addizione di oltre 100.000 TEU di slots a bordo. La crescita è stata da attribuirsi a tonnellaggio di noleggio aggiuntivo ed a spese notevoli in naviglio di seconda mano. Inoltre, la MSC ha commissionato 5 navi da 6.500 TEU nel corso del 2003. Il nuovo tonnellaggio è stato impiegato nei suoi servizi Asia-Europa.

In termini di capacità relativa alle navi, la MSC ha drasticamente ridotto il divario rispetto alla APMM e, con le sue 28 navi ordinate, essa intende ridurre ulteriormente il margine. La MSC ha incrementato le dimensioni della propria flotta di oltre il 75% negli ultimi due anni. Nel corso del 2003, essa ha aggiunto un allacciamento transpacifico, lo "Orient Express". Questo servizio impiega 5 navi da 2.600 TEU e copre porti in Cina e Long Beach negli Stati Uniti. Inoltre, la MSC ha introdotto un servizio Asia-Mediterraneo, il "Dragon Express", che impiega 9 navi da 5.500 TEU concentrate su carichi cinesi destinati a porti hub del Mediterraneo.

Lo Evergreen Group ha annunciato un nuovo programma di costruzioni a settembre del 2003, confermando le proprie intenzioni di spendere 3 miliardi dollari USA nel prossimo decennio per migliorare la propria flotta di portacontainers. Lo Evergreen Group intende ricevere in consegna sino a 49 navi tra il settembre 2005 ed il 2013. Ventiquattro delle nuove costruzioni saranno superiori ai 6.000 TEU. La prima fase del programma è stata annunciata ad agosto 2003, quando la Evergreen ha ordinato 10 navi per contenitori da 6.724 TEU presso la MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries). E' interessante notare come le ultime navi siano state concepite secondo il modello della "nave verde". Quest'ultimo comporta l'adozione dell'approccio a doppia chiglia per tutte le navi cisterna petroliere, a scopo di protezione ambientale nel caso di collisione. La prima delle tipo "S" sarà consegnata a settembre del 2005, mentre le navi successive saranno varate ad intervalli di tre mesi. Queste navi sono state progettate per i traffici di linea primaria Asia-Europa, e saranno impiegate su questa rotta dalle consociate della Evergreen, la Hatsu e la Lloyd Triestino, ciascuna delle quali riceverà cinque navi. Gettando una sguardo alla classifica, la Evergreen ha oltrepassato la PONL (P&O Nedlloyd) diventando nel 2003 il terzo vettore containerizzato a livello mondiale.

La CMA CGM si è mossa dall'ottava alla quinta posizione in classifica. Negli ultimi due anni, la CMA CGM ha incrementato la propria capacità del 70% ed al 1' ottobre 2003 totalizzava 299.174 TEU. Il registro delle ordinazioni del vettore francese ha raggiunto le 19 navi. Ad agosto del 2003, essa ha stipulato contratti con la HHI (Hyundai Heavy Industries) per 8 portacontainers da 8.200 TEU. Queste nuove navi saranno consegnate alla CMA CGM a marzo del 2006 e saranno impiegate nel servizio FAL nell'ambito dei traffici Asia/Europa, dove andranno a rimpiazzare il tonnellaggio esistente da 6.500 TEU. Nel corso del 2003, la CMA CGM ha introdotto tre servizi Asia/Europa e più recentemente ha dato inizio ad un servizio tra i porti del Mediterraneo Occidentale e la Costa Orientale degli U.S.A. Lo "Amerigo Express" sarà un servizio effettuato congiuntamente con la CSCL (China Shipping Container Lines) e verrà condotto con cinque navi da 1.700 TEU.

Nell'aprile 2003, la OOCL, che appartiene alla GA (Grand Alliance), ha commissionato la sua prima nave da 8.000 TEU, facente parte di una serie di 10 unità da 8.063 TEU, alla SHI (Samsung Heavy Industries). Le navi verranno dislocate nel servizio Loop D, China Europe Express, nell'ambito dei traffici Asia/Europa. Un altro associato alla GA che ha introdotto tonnellaggio più grande nei servizi dell'alleanza è stata la NYK Line. Nel 2003, essa ha ricevuto in consegna 5 navi di costruzione giapponese da 6.238 TEU e le ha piazzate in vari servizi di linea primaria della GA Asia/Europa e transpacifici.

Lo scorso anno, la Hanjin Shipping ha migliorato la qualità dei propri ruolini di marcia Est/Ovest nell'ambito dell'alleanza CHKY (Cosco/Hanjin/K Line/Yang Ming) e ha introdotto 4 navi da 5.750 TEU nei propri servizi Asia/Europa, CEX e NEX.

Complessivamente, l'attività di trasporto marittimo contenitori continua ad essere assorbita dalle ordinazioni e dalla costruzione di nuove navi e dall'espansione dei servizi nuovi e di quelli esistenti. Tuttavia, il trasporto marittimo di linea è un'attività ciclica ed i vettori marittimi dovrebbero ricordare che il loro settore è caratterizzato da cicli periodici di incremento e di stagnazione, in media ogni cinque o sei anni. Queste aspettative potrebbero scoraggiare il loro entusiasmo nell'ordinare nuove grandi navi. Si dice anche che molti armatori e progettisti stiano sviluppando piani relativi a mega-portacontainers, con capacità di 12.000-15.000 TEU. Tuttavia, più realisticamente, nel corso del 2004 dovrebbero concretizzarsi ordinazioni di navi dell'ordine di 10.000 TEU.
