The Spanish Ministry of Transport, within the framework of the third cycle of the program of marine eco-incentives within the plan of Resumption, Transformation and Resilience (PRTR), has allocated beyond 11,8 million euros in subsidies in favor of companies that have chosen the marine goods transport as a sustainable alternative to road transport. To be subsidized are 163.672 shipments carried out by 32 companies in different periods between 8 May 2024 and 31 March 2025. Grants cover 11 maritime routes, all with valid road transport alternatives, connecting six Spanish ports (Barcelona, Bilbao, Sagunto, Santander, Valencia and Vigo) with EU countries, including Belgium, France, Ireland and Italy.
The eco-incentive has been assigned for each transported unit and for each trip, based on the savings generated in Spain in terms of external costs, including greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, congestion, accidents and noise. The environmental performance of ships has also been taken into account, based on capacity, average employment, fuel type, emissions reduction system, speed, port emissions and distance travelled.
Among the recipients of the subsidies there are ten Italian companies including the highest amount, pairs to 2,05 million euros, was assigned to the Trans Italia Srl, followed by the F.lli Di Martino Spa with 505 thousand euros and the Independent Tank Transport Srl with 493 thousand euros.
