Trasporto marittimo containerizzato: la classifica delle prime 20 compagnie

Il consolidamento da lungo tempo atteso nel settore del trasporto marittimo di linea ha fatto un notevole passo avanti nel 1999, alla luce della pianificata acquisizione da parte della Maersk del suo partner operativo globale, la Sea-Land Service, dalla CSX Cargo.

Anche se le sedute relative all'accertamento alla debita diligenza sono ancora in corso, è imminente l'approvazione da parte della DGIV (direzione per la concorrenza della Commissione Europea). L'ufficio in questione ha dichiarato che le proprie indagini hanno rivelato come nell'ambito delle principali direttrici di traffico la quota di mercato del gruppo combinato non raggiunga il 25%; di conseguenza, l'accordo è rispettoso delle regole europee sulla concorrenza. Ci si aspetta entro poco tempo un annuncio da parte della Commissione Marittima Federale degli Stati Uniti, mentre la transazione dovrebbe essere portata a completamento per la fine di quest'anno.

Non essendo stati pertanto riscontrati problemi in ordine alla fusione tra la maggiore e la sesta delle compagnie che effettuano servizi di linea a livello mondiale, la rivista Containerisation International ha combinato le loro capacità in termini di spazi-containers al fine di tracciare un'analisi riguardo ai primi 20 operatori containerizzati del mondo. Ne è risultato che la Maersk-SeaLand dispone di una flotta operativa complessiva di 544.558 TEU, che rappresentano approssimativamente il 9,2% di tutti gli spazi-containers impiegati a livello globale (v. Tabella 1). Questi dati non comprendono le 16 navi per complessivi poco più di 29.000 TEU che la Sea-Land, con sede a Charlotte nel North Carolina (U.S.A.), vuole destinare al mantenimento dei propri servizi nazionali statunitensi. Questi traffici ai sensi del Jones Act sono infatti estranei all'accordo con la Maersk.

I più di mezzo milione di TEU di spazi-containers impiegati dalla Maersk-SeaLand non comprendono neanche quelli della società gemella SCL (Safmarine Container Lines), che viene gestita quale organismo distinto ed a se stante nell'ambito del gruppo AP Møller. Tuttavia, la flotta della SCL - ammontante a 41 navi ed a 45.781 TEU di spazi-containers - se venisse aggiunta a quella della Maersk-SeaLand, darebbe al gruppo marittimo con sede in Danimarca un'armata di mare containerizzata di più di 256 navi e 590.000 TEU. Si tratta - ed è un dato impressionante - di una capacità che è nove volte e mezzo quella impiegata dal 20° operatore della classifica mondiale, vale a dire la CSAV (Compañia Sudamericana de Vapores), che controlla poco più di 61.000 TEU.

Inoltre, le compagnie di linea della AP Møller hanno in corso complessivamente ordinazioni relative alla costruzione di nuove unità per più di 128.000 TEU (30 navi), la consegna delle quali è prevista - per tutte quante - entro la fine del 2000 (v. Tabella 2). Tra esse vi sono 10 navi in grado di caricare più di 6.000 TEU, cinque delle quali ordinate dalla Costamare Shipping con sede al Pireo per essere noleggiate a lungo termine alla Sea-Land.

Dato questo notevole registro di ordinazioni - che giganteggia su quello della P&O Nedlloyd che è al secondo posto per 84.000 TEU, corrispondenti a più del 52% - la presa della Maersk sul settore globale della navigazione marittima di linea è destinata ad aumentare ulteriormente. Le principali compagnie rimarranno tali anche nell'immediato futuro.

Tuttavia, la Maersk non è stata l'unica compagnia che si è attivamente dedicata ad acquisire attività e/o a fondere le proprie operazioni nel 1999. L'esigenza di costituire una massa critica di mercato e di conseguire migliori economie operative è stata in cima ai pensieri dei dirigenti della Hamburg Sud The Shipping Group Delmas, il vettore con sede a Le Havre che fa parte del Gruppo Bollore, nonché dei dirigenti della CSAV, principale compagnia di navigazione di linea del Sudamerica.

Ad esempio la CSAV, con sede a Santiago, ha rafforzato la propria posizione in America Latina rilevando l'uruguayana Montemar SA ed acquistando una quota di controllo (75%) delle attività di linea del Grupo Libra con sede a Rio de Janeiro. Si sa che la CSAV sta ora mirando al vettore argentino Maruba SCA, che assicura servizi di linea dalla regione del Mercosur, la Costa Occidentale nordamericana ed il Mediterraneo.

La CSAV controlla un'armata di spazi-containers di più di 61.000 TEU e quest'anno è entrata ex novo nella classifica dei primi 20 operatori mondiali. Si tratta della prima volta che un operatore con sede in Sudamerica è presente nelle prime venti posizioni da quando Containerisation International, 16 anni fa, ha cominciato a stilare regolarmente questa speciale classifica.

Anche la Chilean Line dispone di un notevole quantitativo di ordinazioni, tra cui 5 unità da 3.100 TEU e 2 unità da 1.726 TEU (v. Tabella 2). Il primo dei suddetti contratti è costituito da un'associazione commerciale con l'importante armatore/gestore di portacontainers tedesco Peter Dohle.

Nel frattempo, la Hamburg Sud, che ha dato seguito alle proprie acquisizioni avvenute nel 1998 della Alianca e della South Sea Steamship con l'acquisto dei servizi Nord Europa/Costa Orientale del Sudamerica della Transroll Navegação, dei servizi sudamericani di linea della Crowley American Transport e della Polinesia Line, resta una potenziale nuova entrata nella classifica del prossimo anno.

Attualmente, l'operatore con sede ad Amburgo impiega 32 navi per complessivi più di 55.000 TEU ed occupa la 21a posizione. Tuttavia, la flotta totale non comprende l'accordo CAT, che coinvolgerà almeno 7 navi della fascia dimensionale da 2.100/2.400 TEU oltre ad altri noleggi che verranno ceduti alla Hamburg Sud. Queste unità non sono calcolate ai fini della classifica poiché la transazione - al momento della sua compilazione - non era ancora stata completata. Ma, con gli almeno 16.000 TEU di ulteriori spazi-containers che stanno per aggiungersi alla sua armata di mare, la Hamburg Sud sarebbe senz'altro entrata in classifica, attestandosi al 18° posto.

La Hamburg Sud sta inoltre migliorando la propria flotta, rimpiazzando le navi più vecchie costruite negli anni '70 con tonnellaggio moderno (di proprietà e noleggiato). Sono state ordinate presso la sud-coreana Samsung Shipbuilding & Engineering quattro navi della capacità di 3.700 TEU, la cui consegna è prevista nel corso del 2001. Oggetto di progetti di acquisizione un paio di anni fa, la Hamburg Sud sta ora investendo in modo ingente al fine di restare indipendente.

Altri pretendenti all'ingresso in classifica sono diversi operatori feeder e locali, quali la Regional Container Line, la MISC (Malaysian International Shipping Corp) e la Wan Hai Lines.

Tornando all'attuale classifica, le prime cinque posizioni restano le stesse dello scorso anno.

Sulla scia della Maersk-SeaLand, la Evergreen/Uniglory Marine Corp con sede a Taipei, al secondo posto, ha fatto registrare la crescita maggiore, dal momento che i suoi spazi-containers combinati sono aumentati di poco più dell'11% per 311.951 TEU.

La P&O Nedlloyd, vettore anglo-olandese sorto da una fusione nel 1997, occupa il terzo posto con una capacità complessiva di bordo di 268.625 TEU (sino al 7,1%), mentre la (MSC) Mediterranean Shipping Company resta attaccata alla quarta posizione. Nel 1999, la flotta del vettore con sede in Svizzera contava 124 navi per complessivi 225.636 TEU, con un balzo del solo 2% rispetto alla sua posizione del 1998.

Ciononostante, questa è stata ancora un'annata di notevoli progressi, dato che la MSC ha colmato il buco residuo nella propria rete mondiale con l'inaugurazione di un servizio transpacifico di linea a maggio di quest'anno. Questo collegamento ora utilizza cinque navi in grado di caricare dai 3.000 ai 4.000 TEU.

Malgrado la pressione esercitata dalla APL (che ha scalato due posizioni attestandosi alla sesta), la Hanjin ha mantenuto il proprio posto tra i primi cinque operatori. Nella capacità di bordo complessiva del vettore sud-coreano, che oltrepassa i 217.000 TEU, è compresa la quota azionaria maggioritaria nella DSR-Senator Lines con sede a Brema. Tuttavia, si tratta di una posizione che la Hanjin verosimilmente finirà per consolidare, dati i suoi recenti accordi con le società armatoriali/finanziarie tedesche Conti Reederei e Gebab al fine di noleggiare a lungo termine 7 navi da 5.800 TEU in corso di costruzione presso la sud-coreana Hanjin Heavy Industries. Le navi saranno consegnate tra il 2000 ed il 2001.

Altre compagnie di navigazione di linea che nel 1999 hanno migliorato la propria posizione sono la Zim Israel Navigation, la CP Ships (che comprende la Americana Ships, associazione commerciale con la Transportacion Maritima Mexicana) e la CMA-CGM The French Line, che tutte quante hanno guadagnato due posizioni, attestandosi rispettivamente in 10a, 11a e 12a.

La capacità della Zim è aumentata del 30% nel 1999, dal momento che il vettore ha noleggiato altro tonnellaggio per un nuovo servizio dedicato Asia/Costa Occidentale statunitense e ha ampliato la propria presenza nel mercato interasiatico. Anche la CMA-CGM ha noleggiato navi in più e ha iniziato le operazioni nel transpacifico. La flotta del vettore con sede a Marsiglia è stata altresì irrobustita con il rilevamento della ANL e l'acquisto del servizio Mediterraneo/Antille Francesi dalla Delmas.

La CMA-CGM sta spingendo per ottenere un posto tra le prime dieci. Attualmente, essa ha ordinazioni in corso per 4 unità da 2.200 TEU destinate al proprio servizio giramondo Europa/Stati Uniti/Sud Pacifico/Australasia/Sud-Est asiatico/Europa. Essa sta inoltre prendendo in considerazione l'ipotesi di far costruire una nuova serie di navi (sino ad otto unità) da 6.100 TEU per le proprie operazioni primarie della French Asia Line. Queste navi dovrebbero essere noleggiate a lungo termine, con opzioni di acquisto.

Anche la CP Ships ha fatto registrare un incremento prossimo al 30% degli spazi-containers impiegati. La capacità di bordo complessiva della compagnia, pari a 133.000 TEU, tiene conto dell'aggregazione della Australia-New Zealand Direct Line e della flotta della Americana Ships, in cui il gruppo ha una quota azionaria del 50%.

Altrove, la OOCL, il trio giapponese (K Line, Mitsui OSK Lines e NYK Lines) e la United Arab Shipping Co hanno tutte quante migliorato di un posto la propria classifica, ma ciò è interamente da attribuirsi alla fusione tra Maersk e Sea-Land.

Al contrario, la Hapag-Lloyd e la HMM (Hyundai Merchant Marine) sono scivolate in classifica rispettivamente alla 17a ed alla 13a posizione. Nel caso del principale operatore tedesco, il calo si può attribuire al fatto che nel 1999 non è stata ricevuta in consegna nessuna nuova nave.

Tale situazione muterà nel 2000, allorquando la Hapag-Lloyd immetterà in servizio 7 navi da 2.800 TEU. Per quanto alcune delle nuove navi vengano utilizzate al fine di rimpiazzare il tonnellaggio obsoleto, l'incremento della capacità in spazi-containers dovrebbe comportare l'avanzata in classifica nel 2000 della Hapag-Lloyd.

Le prospettive appaiono buone anche per la HMM, che starebbe per ordinare una nuova serie di navi post-Panamax in grado di caricare 6.400 TEU. I dettagli finanziari delle ordinazioni relative alle cinque navi, che verranno effettuate presso la società-gemella Hyundai Heavy Engineering, dovrebbero essere messi a punto entro la fine dell'anno. La consegna di questo tonnellaggio è prevista per il 2001/2002.

Sicuramente uno degli avvenimenti di rilievo dell'anno è stata l'ascesa della China Shipping Container Lines (che fa parte della società China Shipping Group di Shanghai) del presidente Li Kelin, la quale si è attestata al 19° posto.

In poco più di due anni, la società è cresciuta da operatore che effettuava quasi esclusivamente traffici di cabotaggio cinesi, servendosi di una flotta di rinfusiere e di portacontainers fino ad un massimo di 350/400 TEU, a compagnia di servizi di linea internazionali impegnata su rotte a lungo raggio quali l'Asia/Australia e l'Europa/Asia. In fase di programmazione vi sono nuovi collegamenti tra l'Asia ed il Mediterraneo ed il Nordamerica.

Nel 1999, la CSCL ha noleggiato grosso modo 20 navi della fascia dimensionale da 2.000 a 3.000 TEU ed è trapelato che sono in corso trattative con gli armatori tedeschi circa un possibile programma di nuove costruzioni e noleggi a lungo termine.

Dal momento che Li è deciso a far crescere la CSCL fino a farla diventare uno dei primi cinque operatori containerizzati di linea a livello globale nel giro dei primi anni del nuovo millennio, ci si aspettano ulteriori progressi nel 2000, allorquando è prevedibile un piazzamento in classifica tra le prime 10 compagnie di navigazione.

Il solo altro nuovo ingresso in classifica è avvenuto ad opera della CSAV, che ha preso il posto della Safmarine & CMBT Lines, la quale adesso è partecipata totalmente dall'A. P. Møller Group.

Quanto alle future caratteristiche della classifica, l'analisi della Tabella 2 - che riporta i contratti confermate di nuove costruzioni in consegna nei prossimi due anni - suggerisce che vi saranno ben pochi cambiamenti. Infatti, i vettori che dispongono dei maggiori quantitativi di ordinazioni in atto sono quelli già presenti nella classifica dei primi venti.

Le uniche eccezioni sono quelle della Hamburg Sud (4 unità da 3.700 TEU), della Islamic Republic of Iranian Shipping Lines (4 unità da 3.300 TEU) e della Wan Hai Lines (4 unità da 1.660 TEU). A parte la Hamburg Sud, tuttavia, è improbabile che qualcuno di tali vettori riesca ad entrare in classifica nei prossimi due anni.

Di conseguenza, la parola d'ordine resta il consolidamento. Tale processo certamente continuerà, dato che il dirigente in capo della P&ON, Tim Harris, ha annunciato in diverse occasioni negli ultimi mesi che la sua compagnia è pronta ad effettuare ulteriori acquisizioni/fusioni. Nel 2000, è assai probabile che i primi 20 in classifica incrementino i propri possedimenti relativi alla flotta mondiale sino al 60%.
