Ricompense elevate per un trasporto accurato

Ottieni quello per cui paghi. E gli spedizionieri si aspettano un servizio di qualità per le somme più elevate spese per il trasporto dei containers frigo.

Un container refrigerato è l'equivalente, per una nave container, di un passeggero di prima classe. Per una tariffa maggiore, esso riceve continua e personale attenzione. I suoi custodi assicurano che non subirà ritardi e fanno in modo che raggiunga la sua destinazione finale attraverso la via più tranquilla, più conveniente e più veloce possibile.

Jan Kruger, direttore della sezione merci deperibili della Safmarine, descrive il business dei container frigo come "molto più personalizzabile di quello dei carichi secchi. Si ha a che fare con un prodotto 'vivo' e perciò c'è necessità di un maggiore contatto diretto con il cliente".

Tutti gli operatori concordano nell'affermare che un contatto diretto con il cliente, nonché un servizio di confezionamento di elevata qualità sono vitali. Questo va dal design dell'equipaggiamento alla prenotazione del cargo, alla sua movimentazione, alla documentazione ed al suo trasporto via terra.

"Avere comunicazioni efficaci con tutte le parti coinvolte è essenziale", dice Alfred Cheung, direttore della sezione cargo frigo della OOSL. "Ascoltiamo con grande cura e stiamo molto attenti ai dettagli della spedizione durante la prenotazione. La temperatura e la ventilazione devono essere esattamente quelle specificate durante la prenotazione".

"Per quanto concerne invece il mercato, dobbiamo conoscere bene i clienti e che cosa accade nelle loro industrie", spiega Kruger. "Il servizio deve fare scalo e dirigersi verso i porti giusti per minimizzare i tempi di trasporto. Tempo e frequenza del servizio sono due aspetti cruciali".

Anche la pianificazione anticipata è un altro elemento importante delle operazioni con cargo frigo. Ad esempio Eric Bubeer, manager del terminal containers al porto di Durban, afferma: "Risulta fondamentale che, prima dello scarico dei containers, i punti di presa siano adeguati per provvedere ai volumi da scaricare o sbarcare. È anche importante che il terminal riceva informazione sufficiente sui container frigo ancor prima del loro arrivo".

Informazione e documentazione complete rende possibile un efficiente monitoraggio dei containers, sia sulle navi che sulla terra.

Le navi hanno i propri ingegneri di bordo per monitorare e dare assistenza ai containers durante il trasporto. Wu Jian Jian del dipartimento controllo equipaggiamento della COSCO Container Line dice: "Per assicurare che tutti i containers refrigerati siano ben conservati, abbiamo equipaggiato le navi con pezzi di ricambio in numero sufficiente in caso di un qualche guasto. I tecnici di bordo controllano la loro temperatura e il loro stato ogni quattro ore. Abbiamo tutti i nostri propri ispettori ed abbiamo firmato contratti anche con i magazzini".

Alcuni scaricatori di porto fanno da sé il monitoraggio, altri esternalizzano affidando il compito a compagnie specializzate. Il Terminal Containers di Southampton ha il suo staff specializzato, ma si serve di un'agenzia di monitoraggio nei periodi di boom. La ECT a Rotterdam ha concluso una joint venture con la Smith Holland, che offre servizi quali aggancio e sgancio, controllo della temperatura, ispezione, manutenzione e riparazione.

"La movimentazione deve essere accurata, cosicché il container non resti troppo a lungo depositato sulla banchina", dice Kruger della Safmarine.

Un altro modo con cui un porto può migliorare il viaggio del container è, secondo l'opinione dell'Autorità Portuale di Dubai, assicurarsi che non ci siano ritardi nelle procedure funzionario/cliente. A Dubai un ispettore municipale fornisce il servizio direttamente sul posto.

Il container subirà meno intoppi se il potenziale dei problemi è ridotto sin dall'inizio. Cheung dice: "Alla OOCL, prima di inviare il container vuoto al cliente perché lo riempia, il cargo frigo va al deposito con un mandato di ispezione pre-viaggio. Ciò garantisce che tutti i dispositivi refrigeranti funzionino bene e si viene a ridurre anche la probabilità di guasti durante il viaggio".

Il trasporto dei containers frigo su terra è dominato dai camion. Secondo i dati del porto di Rotterdam, che possiede il 42% delle postazioni frigo nell'arco Le Havre-Amburgo, il trasporto su camion di questo tipo di containers occupa il primo posto nella regione. "Sulla lunga distanza, il camion offre i vantaggi di essere veloce ed accurato", dice Minco van Heezen del porto di Rotterdam.

"Il trasporto di carichi frigorifero su treno tuttavia è in crescita. Le connessioni navetta garantiscono tempi di trasporto ridotti mentre i sistemi di monitoraggio e controllo salvaguardano il cargo. Il trasporto dei carichi frigo è ancora relativamente sottosviluppato nello shipping dei containers entroterra. Molte chiatte hanno capacità insufficiente e non riescono a trasportare più di due o tre cargos".

In Sud Africa Safmarine e Spoornet, la rete ferroviaria Sudafricana, hanno sviluppato una tecnologia di refrigerazione utilizzabile per containers su treni a lunga percorrenza. L'energia per i containers integrali è fornita da un generatore apposito, localizzato nella parte centrale del treno.

"Il nostro business della refrigerazione è ancora principalmente port-to-port, ma da quando Maersk-Sealand si è immessa sul mercato, le operazioni nell'entroterra si sono considerevolmente espanse", dice Kruger. "Stiamo muovendo treni frigorifero per la stagione dell'uva, dall'area dell'Orange River a Cape Town".

Questo tragitto di oltre 600 miglia è, comunque, superato dal servizio di oltre 1.000 miglia di Salfmarine per gli avocados, che sono trasportate da Tzaneen, nel Nord, fino a Cape Town.

Il servizio treno dedicato è solo un esempio di un operatore che offre servizi su misura, resosi conto del fatto che ascoltare i bisogni del consumatore paga.

Le unità frigo necessitano di manutenzioni periodiche per funzionare bene

L'unità frigo, per i suoi numerosi componenti mobili, richiede revisioni più attenti di qualunque altra parte del container.

Due giganti della refrigerazione, Carrier Transicold e Thermo King, raccomandano entrambi una revisione regolare per massimizzare le probabilità dell'unità di offrire prestazioni di lungo periodo e viaggi privi di impedimenti.

"Ogni manuale di manutenzione ha istruzioni di revisione che dovrebbero essere dettagliatamente seguite, con revisioni condotte ad intervalli prestabiliti", avverte Steve Bryant, direttore generale product marketing sezione containers alla Thermo King.

"Anche il modo con cui si lava l'unità può costituire una grossa differenza", secondo Ralph Bott, direttore della revisione generale per il Gruppo Carrier Containers Products, che aggiunge: "è fondamentale che si effettuino pre-viaggi ad hoc, e che si risolvano eventuali problemi che dovessero emergere prima della spedizione. I containers si dovrebbero anche ispezionare con cadenza annuale".

"Circa il 100% dei problemi con le unità può risolversi con l'intervento degli ingegneri di bordo", dice Bott. "Noi addestriamo gli equipaggi delle navi, in banchina o salpando con loro, oppure tenendo appositi corsi, quando possibile nella loro lingua. Il tallone d'Achille delle apparecchiature sono i microprocessori, che spesso non si sanno adeguatamente riparare. Un team di ingegneri appositamente addestrato a questo tipo di riparazioni è molto più produttivo e più utile alle compagnie di spedizione ed ai centri di manutenzione. Il team sarà in grado di mantenere l'equipaggiamento in ottime condizioni, minimizzando i tempi di inattività e ottimizzando il rendimento degli investimenti nelle attrezzature".

Thermo King tiene anche regolarmente corsi pubblici. Bryant ha sottolineato il bisogno per gli ingegneri di bordo di seguire tutti i diversi corsi, visto anche che molte navi sono riunite in consorzi, e gli ingegneri pertanto devono essere in grado di riparare differenti tipologie di unità.

Fare parte di un consorzio significa anche che le navi devono imbarcare più pezzi di ricambio. Carrier e Thermo King informano entrambe le navi della composizione del kit di manutenzione delle loro unità. Di solito quest'ultimo è composto da compressore, microprocessore, valvole, contrattori e qualunque altra parte mobile che potrebbe danneggiarsi.

Dave Forsmark, product manager settore revisioni alla Thermo King, dice: "Se l'unità di refrigerazione è mantenuta in buon ordine di servizio, può anche compensare per eventuali problemi del container, come ad esempio chiusura difettosa dei portelloni o danni in superficie".
