I risultati del 2001 dei primi 20 vettori marittimi mondiali

Come previsto nell'analisi finanziaria dello scorso anno in relazione ai risultati del 2000 dei primi 20 vettori marittimi mondiali, il 2001 non è stato un periodo memorabile per il settore. Dopo un'annata molto buona nel 2000, pressoché tutti i principali operatori hanno dovuto subire uno spettacolare calo dei profitti, in gran parte causato da un micidiale cocktail composto da un declino della crescita dei carichi, da un eccesso di capacità e da tariffe dei noli in caduta.

Per molti, la storia dell'annata si può dividere in due parti distinte. La prima ha tenuto abbastanza bene, ed i vettori hanno continuato a fare soldi, mentre la seconda è stata una sorta di pendio scivoloso che ancora dura. Da allora, molte linee di navigazione hanno riferito risultati ancora peggiori nel corso della prima metà di quest'anno, e le sirene d'allarme dei profitti stanno suonando in parecchi casi, tra cui quelli della NOL, della PONL (P&O Nedlloyd), della Evergreen e del gruppo A P Moller.

Il motivo principale resta quello dell'eccesso di tonnellaggio, in particolar modo nel settore delle post-panamax. Nel 2001, la flotta mondiale delle navi containerizzate pure è cresciuta di un incredibile 12%, per lo più dovuto alla corsa degli armatori a trarre vantaggio dai bassi prezzi delle nuove costruzioni in Sud Corea, unitamente all'impellente necessità di tagliare i costi mediante maggiori economie di scala. D'altro canto, i traffici mondiali sono aumentati solamente di un misero 0,3%sino a 59,1 milioni di TEU, secondo la DRI-WEFA, e cioè ben al di sotto della media del 7,3% fatta registrare nel periodo 1995-2000.

Lo squilibrio è stato peggiore in alcuni traffici, in particolare tra l'Europa e l'Asia nella seconda metà dell'anno: alla fine esso ha costretto alcuni vettori a tagliare artificialmente la capacità. A difesa di tale spiacevole situazione contingente, Robert Woods, presidente della FEFC (Conferenza Noli Estremo Oriente), ha dichiarato: "Negli ultimi 10 anni, i traffici Europa/Asia hanno fatto registrare una crescita molto forte, e non abbiamo ragione di ritenere che ciò non debba continuare, anche in presenza di una minore crescita attesa per il 2001/2002.

Tuttavia, ciò cui abbiamo invece assistito nel 2001 non è stato tanto un rallentamento della crescita, quanto l'effettiva stagnazione della domanda. Quest'ultima è risultata alquanto estranea alle tradizioni di questo traffico e ben al di sotto di qualsivoglia ragionevole previsione". In quel momento, le conseguenze finanziarie dell'11 settembre erano ancora sotto gli occhi di tutti.

Di conseguenza, nel tracciare il quadro della situazione finanziaria della NOL per l'annata in questione, il suo direttore generale Flemming Jacobs ha continuato sullo stesso tenore, affermando: "Noi, ovviamente, programmiamo tenendo conto delle oscillazioni e delle giostre che sono tipiche del nostro settore ciclico. Sapevamo che la capacità globale sarebbe cresciuta dell'11% e che le previsioni di crescita dei traffici parlavano di una crescita del 7%. La capacità si è poi rivelata tale, ma i volumi di traffico no. Di conseguenza, le tariffe si sono disintegrate. In appena un anno, le tariffe medie relative ai traffici sono piombate a livelli che l'ultima volta si erano visti in occasione della crisi asiatica del 1997-98. Ma, quella volta, c'erano voluti tre anni perché le tariffe si deteriorassero sino a quel punto".

In senso ampio, il calo nel mercato delle tariffe dei noli ha comportato il taglio di 300 milioni dollari dai risultati finanziari della NOL. Altri vettori hanno dovuto subire una punizione simile, ma su scala minore. Un problema particolare della APL è costituito dalla sua rilevante posizione nella maggior direttrice di traffico mondiale, quella transpacifica, laddove le tariffe di nolo hanno assistito al calo peggiore. Secondo gli Indicatori Tariffari dei Noli di Containerisation International, la tariffa media del dominante traffico transpacifico in direzione est, in cui la APL aveva una quota di mercato di poco superiore al 9% (il che rappresenta una grande porzione delle sue movimentazioni complessive), è diminuita di oltre il 15% nel 2001.

Senza eccezioni, altri vettori hanno dovuto allo stesso modo lamentare la riduzione delle tariffe di nolo nei propri rapporti finanziari quale problema principale per la loro capacità di profitto. Tra i vettori che hanno dichiarato il livello dei propri profitti, la APL - che ha dovuto subire la maggiore inversione al riguardo, ha riferito di un decremento complessivo del 9% rispetto al 2000, mentre la PONL riferisce di un calo del 4,2%. Il calo nel corso della seconda metà dell'anno potrebbe essere stato ancora peggiore e di molto. Ad esempio, nel caso della PONL, la sua tariffa media nel corso del solo ultimo trimestre è diminuita del 14,6%, rispetto allo stesso periodo del 2000. L'esperienza della Hanjin è stata persino peggiore.

Ma i vettori possono licenziare i propri risultati così semplicemente, o ci sono stati fatti diversi rispetto alla crescita dei traffici in calo ed al suo devastante effetto sulle tariffe di nolo, che potessero ricondursi al loro controllo? Com'è stato già dimostrato, anche se i traffici mondiali non hanno rallentato, potrebbe darsi che si fossero ancora troppe navi in giro nel 2001, nonostante fosse ben nota la situazione di eccedenza del 2000. Una completa analisi di questo argomento rivelerebbe che i due principali traffici mondiali, cioè le direttrici del transpacifico e dell'Asia/Europa, sono state quelle che hanno dovuto subire le peggiori conseguenze.

Inoltre, la mancanza di carichi non sembra essere stata così importante. Un'interessante caratteristica dei risultati della maggior parte dei vettori è che, sebbene le tariffe fossero in calo, le movimentazioni sono state ancora in aumento, il che evidenzia il fatto che il 2001 è stato solamente un'annata di rallentamento economico e non di recessione. Nel caso della APL, le sue movimentazioni sono aumentate del 3% sino a 2,8 milioni di TEU. Quelle della CMA CGM sono aumentate del 17%, sino a 1,89 milioni di TEU, il traffico della Hapag-Lloyd è aumentato dell'8% sino a 1,7 milioni di TEU; i carichi della PONL sono cresciuti del 4,7% sino a 3,18 milioni di TEU, mentre i risultati della Hanjin sono saliti del 6,9%, per citarne solo alcuni.

Chiaramente, alcuni vettori non sono proprio riusciti a controllare il proprio personale addetto alle vendite come avrebbero dovuto fare, oppure si sono verificati altri incidenti, quali i prezzi rapaci?

A tale riguardo, certamente si sono verificate alcune curiose decisioni strategiche nel corso dell'anno, che non si dovrebbero dimenticare. La Cosco, la Evergreen, la K Line, la MISC (Malaysian International Shipping Company) e la MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) si sono tutte quante rese colpevoli di avere improvvisamente inondato i traffici Europa/India di indesiderata capacità alla metà dell'anno, mediante l'impiego di servizi aggiuntivi.

Non c' era assolutamente alcun modo per mezzo del quale il mercato potesse assorbire l'ulteriore 57% di capacità diretta coinvoltavi senza che le tariffe andassero in caduta libera, ed è precisamente ciò che è accaduto. Si sa che molti dirigenti importanti si sono scottati le dita in questa situazione. La Cosco da allora è uscita da quel traffico, e, con l'eccezione della MSC, tutti gli altri si sono riallineati agli operatori esistenti.

La NWA (New World Alliance), che comprende la APL, la MOL e la Hyundai Merchant Marine, ha introdotto una quarta tratta settimanale nel traffico Asia/Europa nel luglio del 2001, che impegnava altre 8 navi da 4.100 TEU, anche se in quel momento il traffico era senza dubbio in declino. Il servizio era stato lanciato sulla scorta dei traffici in aumento dalla Cina, ma, poiché tale crescita avveniva a spese di altro traffico asiatico, ad ottobre esso aveva già dovuto essere ridotto a servizio quindicinale, ed all'inizio di quest'anno è stato annullato del tutto.

La Grand Alliance (NYK, OOCL, MISC, PONL e Hapag-Lloyd) hanno introdotto un nuovo servizio transpacifico (SCX) a giugno 2001, con l'impiego di 6 navi da 3.000 TEU, il quale successivamente ha dovuto essere combinato con un'altra tratta, il servizio FEX, all'inizio di dicembre. Anche la CMA CGM e la CSCL (China Shipping Container Line) ha introdotto una tratta transpacifica a giugno, allorquando il traffico stava chiaramente calando, ma la sua flotta di 5 navi da 2.000 TEU ha dovuto essere ritirata poco tempo dopo. Ed il Lloyd Triestino ha introdotto un nuovo allacciamento transpacifico alla fine di agosto dello scorso anno, impiegando altre 5 navi da 1.810 TEU.

L'introduzione od il ritiro di tali servizi non sono avvenuti a buon mercato e sono stati annunciati molti altri nuovi servizi nel corso dell'anno, malgrado le sirene d'allarme fossero risuonate per il rallentamento della crescita dell'economia mondiale. Ciò pone la questione se tale attività fosse mossa dal desiderio di aumentare la quota di mercato ovvero dalla necessità di impiegare il tonnellaggio in eccedenza. La risposta va al di là del raggio di azione di questa analisi, ma, senza dubbio, si può dire che c'è stato un po' dell'una ed un po' dell'altra, e che tutte e due sono andate ad incidere sfavorevolmente sui risultati dei vettori.

A difesa dei vettori, bisogna dire che erano al lavoro anche altre forze. Molti importanti caricatori hanno senza dubbio effettuato pressioni sui propri fornitori di servizio affinché incrementassero la copertura di mercato globale, incoraggiando in modo artificiale gli investimenti nei casi in cui altrimenti ciò non sarebbe stato preso in considerazione. Tra i caricatori di vertice, c'è ancora una linea di tendenza finalizzata a ridurre il numero dei fornitori di servizio impiegati ed a richiedere a quelli che restano di offrire una gamma di servizi più ampia.

Se questa pressione si riferisca o meno anche alla necessità di investimenti in servizi logistici tradizionalmente offerti dagli spedizionieri, è un'altra questione controversa che va al di là degli scopi di questa analisi, ma occorre almeno dire che alcuni in questo momento vanno senza dubbio in tale direzione, con tutti i suoi conseguenti alti costi iniziali. Molti vettori hanno altresì investito notevoli somme nello sviluppo di tecnologia informatica, che, anche se offre vantaggi all'attività a lungo termine, richiederà qualche tempo perché si realizzi.

Date tutte queste pressioni di mercato, chi sono stati i vincitori ed i perdenti nel 2001? Come sottolineato nell'analisi condotta lo scorso anno, il puro e semplice confronto dei conteggi potrebbe fuorviare a causa di diversi ovvi fattori. I conti di ciascuna compagnia di navigazione vengono normalmente forniti solo nella propria valuta locale, di modo che la svalutazione monetaria e l'inflazione possono svolgere una parte importante. Ad esempio, la HLCL (Hapag-Lloyd Container Line), una delle compagnie che lo scorso anno hanno ottenuto i migliori risultati, ha tratto vantaggio dall'incremento del 7,8% del tasso di cambio tra l'euro ed il dollaro USA, cioè la valuta in cui viene calcolata la maggior parte dei noli internazionali.

Inoltre, non tutte le compagnie di navigazione fanno i loro conti in relazione allo stesso periodo. Ad esempio, l'anno finanziario dei vettori giapponesi va dal 1° aprile al 31 marzo. Rispetto a quelli che si basano sull'anno tradizionale secondo calendario, essi potrebbero essersi lasciati sfuggire tre buoni mesi nel corso del primo trimestre del 2001, mentre le loro divisioni containers avranno certamente sofferto di più per tale motivo nel corso del primo trimestre del 2002, allorquando le tariffe di nolo sono calate in modo anche più allarmante. Inoltre, non tutti i vettori marittimi offrono solamente servizi containerizzati. Molti hanno altre uova nel proprio paniere, tra cui le cisterniere, le rinfusiere, le navi adibite al trasporto di auto e le navi passeggeri.

Infine, non tutti i vettori pubblicano in modo trasparente i propri conti, tra cui la A P Moller (Maersk Sealand) e la Evergreen. Alcuni addirittura non pubblicano per nulla i propri conti: ad esempio, la MSC, la CSCL e la Hamburg Sud. Dati gli scandali in ordine alla contabilità che affiorano in tutto il mondo, come nel caso della Enron, è comprensibile come adesso gli analisti finanziari specializzati nel mercato dello shipping si interessino più attentamente a tale questione.

Ad esempio, nel suo rapporto di metà anno sulla Evergreen Marine, Salomon Smith Barney afferma: "Continuiamo ad avere un'opinione contrastante su coloro che reggono la Evergreen Marine. I dati operativi segnalano un certo qual grado di buoni risultati del settore. Dopo i recenti traumi contabili avvenuti negli Stati Uniti, d'altronde, riteniamo che la Evergreen resti esposta ad un notevole fenomeno di rivalutazione da parte degli investitori istituzionali in conseguenza della sua complessa struttura di società-holding. Nel corso degli anni, le attività sono state trasferite dalla sede centrale della proprietà (Taiwan) a molteplici località, tra cui Panama, Italia e Regno Unito".

Un'altra complicazione nel confronto tra i risultati dei vettori marittimi consiste nel fatto che, a differenza delle principali agenzie logistiche mondiali, la determinazione dei profitti operativi non è sempre la stessa. Invece di stabilire con chiarezza se occorre utilizzare l'EBIT o l'EBITDA, ad esempio, viene impiegata una terminologia più ampia. I dati di Containerisation International rappresentano un tentativo in tal senso, ma il compito è arduo.

Al fine di risolvere almeno parzialmente il problema della valuta in questa analisi, i risultati di ciascun vettore contenuti nella tabella sono stati convertiti in dollari USA utilizzando il tasso di cambio esistente alla fine dell'annata finanziaria. Come si può notare, riguardo ai cambiamenti nei profitti operativi, contrariamente ai risultati dell'annata precedente, i vettori containerizzati puri e quelli quasi puri se la sono passata peggio. APL, PONL, CMA CGM, HMM e OOCL non avranno certo stupito piacevolmente i propri azionisti.

La Hapag-Lloyd è stata la compagnia dalle migliori prestazioni, con un incremento dei profitti operativi del 72,9% (al lordo della svalutazione), ma, dal momento che il suo anno finanziario 2000 andava dal 1° ottobre 1999 al 30 settembre 2000, invece della normale annata gennaio-dicembre, i due periodi non sono esattamente confrontabili.

In termini di giro d'affari, la divisione trasporto marittimo della Hapag-Lloyd, che comprende la HLCL (Hapag-Lloyd Container Line) e la Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, ha ingenerato il 61% delle vendite, mentre il restante 39% è stato dovuto alla Logistica, che comprende la VTG-Lehnkering, la Pracht Forwarding e la Algeco SA.

La HLCL dal canto suo ha riferito di vendite pari a 1,95 miliardi di dollari USA e di un incremento dei profitti operativi, al netto della svalutazione, del 17% sino a 165 milioni di dollari USA. L'operatore sottolinea con forza l'importanza del proprio sistema per la gestione della rendita dei containers al fine di far sì che non si finiscano involontariamente per trasportare attività in perdita.

Sembra che il sistema funzioni bene, dal momento che la HLCL è stata altresì il vettore con i migliori risultati in termini di proventi sulle vendite (13,3%). Subito dopo vengono i vettori giapponesi MOL, NYK e K Line, rispettivamente con l'8,8%, il 7,7% ed il 6,2%; peraltro, la maggior parte delle loro operazioni si riferisce a carichi alla rinfusa.

E' sorprendente che nel 2001 ci sia stata una sola perdita di rilievo, la Cho Yang con sede in Sud Corea, che alla fine nel settembre 2001 è crollata sotto il peso di debiti per oltre 300 milioni di dollari. Sebbene fossero stati proposti diversi piani di salvataggio, i suoi creditori, dopo aver dato un'occhiata approfondita alle immediate prospettive del trasporto marittimo di linea, hanno deciso di averne avuto abbastanza.

Dati i risultati finanziari successivamente annunciati da molte compagnie quest'anno, sembrerebbe che essi abbiano avuto ragione. Come detto in precedenza, le tariffe dei noli hanno continuato a diminuire bruscamente in molte direttrici di traffico, malgrado una ripresa dei flussi di carico, e adesso in giro si vedono molte cifre in rosso. Ciò che dovrebbe preoccupare i caricatori è il fatto che nessun nuovo soggetto ha preso il posto della Cho Yang dopo il suo ritiro.

Infatti, al momento attaule, da un certo numero di anni non si registra l'ingresso nel settore di nuovi arrivati di qualche peso, ma si riscontrano solamente fusioni ed acquisizioni, di modo che il desiderio dei caricatori di ridurre il numero dei fornitori di servizio impiegati potrebbe rivelarsi soddisfatto. Ciò detto, nel 2001 non vi sono state neanche fusioni o acquisizioni di un certo rilievo, il che potrebbe aver distorto i risultati del mercato.

In conclusione, anche se il 2001 è stato un anno che la maggior parte dei vettori vorrà dimenticare, molti sono comunque riusciti a realizzare profitti malgrado il retaggio dell'eccesso di capacità ed alcune decisioni discutibili dal punto di vista strategico. In altre parole, può anche darsi che essi siano stati messi al tappeto, ma non sono stati messi fuori combattimento. Quest'anno promette di essere ancora peggiore, a meno che le tariffe dei noli non migliorino in modo significativo nel corso della seconda metà dell'anno, il che attualmente sembra assai improbabile. In alcuni casi, la pazienza degli azionisti potrebbe alla fine esaurirsi.
