La crescita degli armatori greci di portacontainers

Se si considera che gli armatori greci effettuano operazioni con il 18% circa dell'intera flotta mercantile globale, può sembrare sorprendente il fatto che fino alla metà degli anni '90 essi difficilmente possedessero portacontainers. Questa situazione è mutata nel corso degli ultimi cinque anni, tuttavia, dato che la quota delle portacontenitori (in termini di tonnellaggio) della flotta controllata dai greci è cresciuta dall'appena 2% del 1997 all'8% alla fine del 2002.

Diversi fattori hanno contribuito a tale incremento. Non ultimo fra loro è stato il continuo declino dei tradizionali mercati greci di carichi secchi nei settori delle unità refrigerate e delle doppio ponte, a causa del rastrellamento di più traffico globale da parte delle portacontainers. Il calo in questi mercati tradizionali ha provocato un vivo interesse per le navi containerizzate da parte dei principali armatori greci, quali la Danaos Shipping Co, la Costamare Shipping, la Technomar e la Tsakos Group.

Come al solito, la tempestività è tutto, e questi interessi degli armatori coincidono con la linea di tendenza degli operatori di linea desiderosi di trasferire il costo "fuori bilancio" dell'armamento navale dovuto al calo dei profitti. Ciò, nel contesto di un periodo in cui la proprietà delle navi containerizzate è stata trasferita dalle mani degli operatori di linea stessi al fine di tenerli alla larga dai bilanci di queste compagnie di navigazione a corto di soldi.

Il maggiore armatore greco di portacontainers è la Costamare, che controlla una flotta di 31 navi completamente cellulari, con una capacità combinata di 116.786 TEU. Secondo gli ultimi dati del Containerisation International Yearbook, ciò pone la compagnia di navigazione al 10' posto in classifica tra i maggiori armatori di portacontainers al mondo.

La flotta Costamare comprende un misto di tonnellaggio moderno sotto contratto ad opera della compagnia - tra cui 5 unità post-panamax da 6.252 TEU noleggiate a lungo termine alla Maersk Sealand, consegnate nel 2000 - e di unità costruite per lo più negli anni '70 acquisite di seconda mano negli anni '90. Queste navi hanno una capacità che spazia dai 1.000 ai 1.500 TEU ed erano state originariamente costruite per operatori di linea primaria quale la Hapag-Lloyd. Diverse di queste navi vengono ancora rinoleggiate ai loro operatori originari.

Appartengono alla compagnia di navigazione anche due navi della "Classe-L" da 3.500 TEU della Maersk Sealand costruite nel 1984, una delle quali ancora opera in servizio presso la Maersk Sealand. La seconda nave è attualmente noleggiata alla MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Co).

La Costamare ha recentemente ricevuto in consegna la sua ultima nave, il colosso Maersk Kalkota da 6.414 TEU. Si tratta della prima delle tre nuove costruzioni messe sotto contratto con la Hyundai Heavy Industries quali opzioni inerenti alle navi sopra menzionate. La compagnia dispone di una ulteriore nave (di 4.992 TEU) sotto ordinazione, anche questa presso la Hyundai, che sarà noleggiata a lungo termine alla Zim Israel Navigation con consegna nel 2004.

La Danaos con sede al Pireo è il secondo armatore greco di portacontainers, con una flotta di 17 navi che assicurano una capacità complessiva di 60.831 TEU. La sua flotta di portacontainers è la più moderna tra quelle di tutti gli armatori greci e comprende 2 navi da 3.900 TEU originariamente costruite per la OOCL come OOCL Hope e OOCL Honour nel 1989, di cui adesso si serve nel mercato del noleggio.

Inoltre, 3 unità da 2.900 TEU sono state acquisite dalla Hanjin nel 1997 e vengono rinoleggiate all'operatore di linea con sede in Sud Corea. Diverse navi da 3.000 TEU costruite negli anni '80 sono state recentemente acquistate dai vettori marittimi giapponesi K-Line e MOL. Tra loro vi sono la MOL Victory da e la MOL Independence da 3.000 TEU, acquistate lo scorso anno in blocco per 24 milioni di dollari.

In comune con la Costamare, la Danaos è stata attiva sul mercato delle nuove costruzioni e nel 2001 ha ricevuto in consegna un quartetto di unità da 5.000 TEU realizzate dalla Samsung, le quali sono state noleggiate a lungo termine per otto anni alla APL in relazione ai traffici transpacifici. Lo scorso anno, la Danaos ha inoltre stipulato contratti per 2 navi da 4.300 TEU presso la Samsung in consegna nella prima metà del 2004 per il mercato del noleggio.

I prezzi di nuova costruzione sono attualmente al loro livello più basso di sempre. Paul Dowell dei brokers marittimi Howe Robinson, con sede a Londra, spiega al riguardo: "Gli armatori greci da sempre fanno il proprio ingresso in un mercato nel corso di un periodo di ribasso. Al momento, i prezzi delle portacontainers (sia nuove che di seconda mano) e le tariffe di noleggio sono ad un punto basso di portata storica. Il loro ingresso nel settore delle portacontenitori è strategico e riflette l'approccio tipico dell'armamento greco.

Gli armatori greci che hanno effettuato investimenti negli ultimi 18 mesi in portacontainers si troveranno in buona posizione allorquando si verificherà la ripresa del mercato".

Il modello di armamento greco è alquanto diverso da quello che si presentava in Germania, nazione in cui l'armamento di portacontainers è di tipo più tradizionale. Le limitazioni del sistema "KG" di tipo fiscale in ordine al finanziamento "a partecipazione limitata", utilizzato da molti armatori greci, li costringe a mantenere la proprietà delle navi per un minimo di sette anni. Il sistema greco, al contrario, utilizza strumenti di finanziamento navale più tradizionali sotto forma di mutui bancari e di fondi privati, che consente agli armatori greci di armare e disarmare unità in modo molto più svelto rispetto al normale ciclo dello shipping. Si tratta di qualcosa che gli armatori greci di maggiore successo, che per lo più hanno ditte a conduzione familiare, sembrerebbero avere perfezionato sino ad una sorta di arte.

Sebbene la flotta di portacontainers controllata dai greci sia notevolmente più piccola dell'armata navale appartenente ai tedeschi - approssimativamente 360.000 TEU, rispetto agli 1,8 milioni di TEU della flotta di portacontenitori tedesca - quella greca è di più recente sviluppo. Essa cominciò a decollare davvero nel corso del precedente mercato al ribasso del trasporto marittimo containerizzato, al tempo della crisi finanziaria asiatica del 1997-98.

Tale recessione costituì un catalizzatore per la crescita dell'armamento containerizzato greco, allorquando diversi armatori tradizionali acquistarono naviglio di seconda mano relativamente nuovo dai vettori marittimi, in particolar modo la Hanjin e la Cho Yang, sulla base di accordi di vendita e noleggio di ritorno.

Queste transazioni sono state vantaggiose per i vettori marittimi coinvolti, nel senso che hanno liberato flussi di cassa essenziali necessari a puntellare le loro finanze al limite, ma che consentono agli operatori di mantenere la navi nei propri servizi di linea. Nello stesso tempo, gli astuti armatori greci impegnati nel settore mettono le mani sulle portacontainers di alta qualità a basso prezzo e contestualmente le reimpiegano noleggiandole di ritorno ai venditori, sebbene con un rischio dovuto alle ristrettezze finanziarie di alcuni degli operatori di linea coinvolti.

Accordi simili sono stati stipulati anche con vettori marittimi europei per portacontainers della prima generazione costruite negli anni '70, che costituivano le flotte originali degli attuali maggiori armatori greci. Gli accordi di vendita e noleggio di ritorno restano popolari presso gli armatori greci e recentemente sono stati conclusi molti accordi apparentemente più fruttuosi.

Un'altra forza emergente tra gli armatori di naviglio containerizzato è la Technomar Shipping. La compagnia di navigazione è entrata nel settore delle portacontainers cellulari alla grande nel marzo 2001, allorquando ha acquisito l'intera flotta delle navi da 1.894 TEU del "tipo L" appartenenti alla Evergreen Group, costruite tra il 1979 ed il 1983. Tutte e sei queste unità da 21 nodi sono state rinoleggiate alla Evergreen per un periodo minimo di quattro anni alla buona tariffa di 9.750 dollari/giorno ciascuna. Da allora, la compagnia di navigazione si è accaparrata quattro unità da 3.428 TEU del "tipo GX" della Evergreen collegate ad un accordo di rinoleggio di sei anni ed è attualmente in trattative per acquisire ulteriore tonnellaggio dalla flotta della Evergreen Group.

L'armata di mare della Technomar comprende altresì la nave Maipo (da 2.196 TEU) del servizio Eurosal (Europa/Costa Occidentale Sudamerica), in precedenza appartenente alla CSAV, e la MOL Osaka da 1.952 TEU, che è stata acquistata lo scorso anno dalla MOL Lines ed ora presta servizio nella flotta della Pacific International Lines.

Kalliope P. Giannapoulou, dirigente noleggio della Technomar, afferma: "Lo scorso anno, la Technomar ha acquistato 14 navi, gran parte delle quali hanno destinazioni d'impiego a lungo termine.

La nostra strategia è quella di far crescere ulteriormente la nostra flotta di portacontainers e di effettuare operazioni con le navi a lungo termine. Le condizioni complessive del mercato delle portacontainers sono buone, e noi riteniamo che il mercato migliorerà ulteriormente. Le compagnie con una flotta di buona qualità trarranno la maggior parte dei vantaggi nel corso di quest'anno.

Noi siamo interessati per lo più all'acquisto di naviglio containerizzato di seconda mano di alta qualità, ma attualmente siamo altresì sul mercato delle nuove costruzioni che vengono restituite in noleggio".

La Giannapoulou crede che gli armatori puri abbiano un ruolo importante da svolgere per le compagnie di navigazione di linea containerizzate: "La nostra attenzione si concentra sulla prestazione di servizi nei confronti delle esigenze della compagnia di navigazione di linea senza essere distratti dai normali elementi esterni che una compagnia di quel tipo si trova a dover affrontare con le sue centinaia di clienti caricatori".

Le operazioni con portacontainers su orari fissi di linea forse richiede un approccio maggiormente reattivo rispetto alle operazioni con navi nel contesto dei più tradizionali settori greci dei carichi secchi. "Per effettuare operazioni di portacontainers con successo, occorre conservare l'integrità degli orari della nave ed avere uno standard di operazioni molto alto, che è richiesto dai nostri noleggiatori. Noi restiamo in costante comunicazione e diamo risposte immediate alle esigenze dei nostri clienti operatori di linea" spiega la Giannopoulou.

Un altro armatore greco che sta cercando di incrementare il proprio portafoglio di portacontainers è la Tsakos Shipping and Trading. Questa compagnia di navigazione, che è un'importante operatore di cisterniere e rinfusiere, diede inizio alle operazioni con portacontainers nel 1992. La sua flotta attualmente comprende 10 navi con una capacità complessiva di 19.387 TEU, tra cui 3 navi da 3.000 TEU acquistate dalla Hanjin nel 1997, che in origine erano collegate ad un accordo di noleggio di ritorno.

Il noleggio di queste navi è terminato alla fine dello scorso anno in un momento in cui le tariffe erano molto basse. Tuttavia, la Tsakos prese la decisione di attendere una ripresa del mercato prima di impegnare le navi in qualsiasi cosa che fosse più di viaggio circolare a breve termine o un noleggio per viaggio singolo. Secondo Stelios Glyptis, dirigente noleggi della Tsakos, "l'inizio del 2002 ha trovato un mercato containerizzato estremamente debole. Tuttavia, a causa dell'inattesa crescita dei volumi dei carichi, il mercato è riuscito a riprendersi. Adesso siamo in grado di affermare che per il 2003 le tariffe medie di noleggio saranno molto migliori di quelle del 2002". Le tre navi sono state recentemente assegnate alla MSC per noleggi di 12 mesi secondo tariffe più soddisfacenti.

La Tsakos sta attualmente studiando il mercato delle nuove costruzioni nonché prendendo in considerazione ordini per un quartetto di unità panamax da 4.300 a 4.900 TEU, ma procederà ad ordinare le navi con accortezza, piuttosto che legarle ad un accordo di noleggio a lungo termine con un vettore marittimo.

Glyptis rivela la filosofia della Tsakos in ordine alle operazioni containerizzate: "Uno dei principali fattori che hanno contribuito alla crescita, al successo ed alla reputazione della compagnia di navigazione è la nostra attenzione nel fornire servizi di qualità al cliente. Inoltre, siamo impegnati nella realizzazione di relazioni a lungo termine con tutti i principali operatori di containers, con i quali siamo già in ottime relazioni: tra gli altri, Maersk Sealand, MSC, Hanjin e APL.

Siamo impegnati nelle operazioni con portacontainers a lungo termine semplicemente perché crediamo nell'espansione dei carichi containerizzati e nella crescita dei traffici. D'altro lato, la gestione tecnica delle portacontainers è molto impegnativa e presenta molte somiglianze con la gestione delle cisterniere, con cui abbiamo avuto molto successo per oltre 30 anni".

Quanto davvero preoccupato sia il mercato tedesco circa il crescente interesse degli armatori greci non è chiaro, ma esso deve preoccuparsi. Come già detto in precedenza, la tempestività è tutto, ed i greci non sono noti per sbagliare al riguardo.

Un fattore di preoccupazioni per loro, tuttavia, dev'essere la recente ripresa del mercato delle tariffe dei noli, che induce vettori marittimi quali la Maersk Sealand a trasformare le previsioni di perdita per il 2002 in previsioni di profitto. Una volta che questi soggetti avranno iniziato a fare davvero soldi di nuovo, il pendolo potrebbe volgersi nuovamente a favore dell'armamento navale, allo scopo di trarre vantaggio dalle generose indennità di deprezzamento, dato che i vettori marittimi, più di chiunque altro, odiano pagare le tasse.
