Ottimo momento per la produzione di containers

L'industria mondiale produttrice di containers ha sperimentato una forte ripresa nel corso del 2003, quando la produzione è salita alle stelle ed è entrata in funzione una notevole capacità produttiva in più. La maggior parte delle fabbriche per tutta l'annata trascorsa sono rimaste continuamente in attività, il che contrasta con il 2001 ed il 2002, quando molte di loro avevano chiuso per diversi mesi per carenza di attività.

Nel corso del 2003 le previsioni relative alla produzione globale di containers parlavano di 2,2 milioni di TEU (di tutti i tipi), i quali avranno superato il precedente record, pari a 1,93 milioni di TEU, realizzato nel corso dell'annata a gonfie vele del 2000. Tale cifra è stata del 30% maggiore rispetto agli 1,7 milioni di TEU consegnati nel 2002 e del 70% maggiore rispetto alle cifre realizzate nel 2001, per soli 1,28 milioni di TEU, allorquando la produzione aveva fatto segnare il suo punto più basso di quasi un decennio. Inoltre, i tipi di contenitori più comuni sono stati prodotti in quantità in aumento nel corso del 2003, tanto è vero che la sola produzione di unità ISO per carichi secchi è salita di un terzo rispetto al 2002.

Anche la produzione dei refrigerati integrali è aumentata, così come la costruzione mondiale dei containers cisterna e locali. Questi ultimi comprendono gli swapbody e le unità pallet-wide (non cellulari), popolari in Europa ed in Australia, nonché i box nazionali nord-americani. Tuttavia, nessuno di questi tipi più speciali ha conseguito la stessa crescita in termini di risultati produttivi come quella ottenuta dal settore primario delle unità per carichi secchi, ed essi continuano a rappresentare una percentuale molto piccola della produzione mondiale in termini di TEU.

La fabbricazione globale dei containers per carichi secchi, che comprendono gli standard e gli speciali (open-top, flatracks ecc.), ha quasi raggiunto i due milioni di TEU nel 2003 e ha così contribuito ad oltre il 90% di tutta la produzione. In confronto, la produzione di refrigerati è stata di poco superiore ai 120.000 TEU, con la produzione di cisterne a rappresentare solo un decimo di questa cifra. La produzione mondiale combinata di equipaggiamento locale containerizzato ha totalizzato circa 700.000 TEU, compresi 30.000 TEU di swapbody, 16.000 TEU di pallet-wide e 24.000 TEU di nazionali nord-americani.

L'ultima crescita della produzione dei contenitori è stata alimentata da una ripresa assai sostenuta della domanda di equipaggiamenti in più. Dopo due anni di crescita relativamente scarsa, le previsioni relative ai volumi globali dei traffici containerizzati parlano di un incremento sino al 10% nel 2003. Ciò ha accelerato la consegna in corso di nuove portacontainers, con circa 580.000 TEU di ulteriori slots di bordo la cui entrata in servizio era prevista per il 2003. Ci si aspetta che il loro impiego ingeneri una richiesta straordinaria di 1,16 milioni di TEU di equipaggiamento containerizzato, come calcolato rispetto alla attuale proporzione operativa di TEU nell'ordine di approssimativamente due contenitori per ciascuno slot.

La domanda containerizzata è stata altresì sospinta verso l'alto dalle sostituzioni di vecchi containers a livelli record, dato che si stima che 850.000 TEU dovrebbero essere dismessi (per essere destinati ad usi secondari) nel corso del 2003. Ciò si confronta con la cifra di 750.000 TEU rivenduti nel 2002, con i 700.000 TEU del 2001 e con i quasi 500.000 TEU degli anni precedenti. Una grossa quota di tutte le recenti dismissioni è stata rappresentata da equipaggiamento appartenente a (o finanziato da) vettori marittimi piuttosto che a ditte di noleggio. Queste ultime hanno dismesso un numero di TEU proporzionalmente minori, a causa della continua forza della domanda di equipaggiamento noleggiato. In effetti, il settore del noleggio di box ha conseguito un'utilizzazione della flotta assai elevata nel corso del 2003, anche se si è impegnata in un altro acquisto record di nuovo equipaggiamento containerizzato.

Il notevole sgombero di vecchi box nel 2003 ha comportato conseguenze sul tasso complessivo di crescita della flotta nell'anno in questione, che era prevista attorno all'8% in termini di TEU. Ci si aspettava che la flotta containerizzata complessiva a livello mondiale raggiungesse i 17,8 milioni di TEU entro la fine dell'anno, in aumento rispetto ai 16,4 milioni di TEU alla fine del 2002. La corrispondente crescita della flotta era stata prossima al 6% nel 2002 e del 4% appena nel 2001. La flotta attuale è attestata a 15,7 milioni di TEU di equipaggiamento marittimo per carichi secchi, 1,25 milioni di TEU di refrigerati/cisterne ed oltre 800.000 TEU di unità di tipo locale.

E' altresì evidente come la produzione di box nuovi nel 2003, a dispetto delle sue dimensioni imponenti, abbia mantenuto ampiamente il passo con la domanda, con una relativamente piccola eccedenza di equipaggiamento in più presso fabbriche o depositi di tutto il mondo alla fine dell'anno. Invece, l'utilizzazione di box (e navi) ha continuato a mantenersi buona nella maggior parte dei traffici. L'attuale ottimismo del mercato suggerisce che la produzione potrebbe restare relativamente sostenuta anche nel 2004. Non vi è, peraltro, alcuna indicazione nel senso che la domanda stia per indebolirsi e, anche se si prevede che la produzione di box diminuisca leggermente nel 2004, essa potrebbe ancora essere notevole.

Malgrado le ottimistiche prospettive, la capacità mondiale installata di box eccede ancora la domanda reale, dato che negli ultimi mesi una vera messe di nuove fabbriche è andata ad aggiungersi a quelle già esistenti. Al contrario dello scorso anno, quando solo un impianto era venuto alla luce, complessivamente sono state pianificate per il 2003 cinque nuove fabbriche di unità per carichi secchi. Quattro avevano iniziato la produzione prima della fine dell'anno. Com'era prevedibile, tutte quante sono situate in Cina, ed alcune operano in località non servite in precedenza da nessuna infrastruttura esistente (tra cui Yantian e Ningbo).

Queste nuove fabbriche hanno aggiunto oltre 500.000 TEU di capacità annua in più, anche se si riconosce che il recente miglioramento/ampliamento degli impianti esistenti abbia introdotto altri 600.000 TEU/annui nel corso dello scorso anno. La capacità complessiva su più turni disponibile per i produttori a livello mondiale è adesso equivalente a circa 3,6 milioni di TEU all'anno, rispetto ai 2,5 milioni di TEU/anno di appena 18 mesi fa.

L'immissione di oltre un milione di TEU di capacità in più in una già grande eccedenza di infrastrutture per la fabbricazione di box ha creato un notevole livello di "fiacchezza" produttiva. Tuttavia, in questo caso si è trattato di uno stratagemma deliberato da parte delle principali imprese, dato che ciò ha consentito loro di far fronte in modo migliore al recente aumento della produzione, evitando altresì la formazione di un arretrato di ordinazioni troppo grande. Ciò ha fatto sì che nel 2003 non si sviluppasse la medesima situazione occorsa nel 2000, quando molti produttori di box erano stati costretti a lavorare a più non posso, allo scopo di soddisfare la domanda, e molte consegne hanno subito ritardi. Si ammette ora che il conseguente arretrato ha contribuito in modo significativo alla notevole sovrapproduzione del 2001, rendendo così considerevolmente peggiore la recessione di quell'anno per la maggior parte dei costruttori di box.

Il settore attualmente presenta un tasso di inutilizzazione della propria capacità pari al 40% circa, il che consente alle fabbriche di lavorare comodamente su turno singolo o doppio nel mercato attuale. Ciò assicura altresì ampie possibilità di far fronte ai futuri picchi della domanda, nonché in ordine alla manutenzione ordinaria delle fabbriche e ad altri miglioramenti.

Sia come sia, l'industria della costruzione di box è oggi più consolidata e gestita più efficacemente che negli anni precedenti. La maggior parte dei recenti incrementi di capacità sono stati effettuati dai più grandi gruppi dediti alla costruzione di box, che erano già affermati sulla piazza, e non dai nuovi arrivati che iniziavano le attività, che invariabilmente debbono recuperare quote di mercato ed è più probabile che scatenino distruttive guerre tariffarie. Allo stesso tempo, molti degli impianti dalle scarse prestazioni hanno chiuso o sono stati assorbiti in gruppi più grandi.

I due principali costruttori di box del mondo sono la CIMC (China International Marine Containers) e la Singamas Container Holdings, che tengono entrambe in funzione enormi (ed ancora in fase di ampliamento) reti di impianti in Cina e che oggi sono estremamente importanti nel tracciare le linee di tendenza. Esse hanno avuto un ruolo importante nella ristrutturazione dell'industria cinese di fabbricazione dei box e nel far ulteriormente avanzare la sua già dominante posizione. Il paese, ad esempio, sta ancora incrementando la propria quota complessiva di produzione col passare degli anni, dato che produttori in loco hanno fabbricato oltre il 90% dell'intero fabbisogno mondiale di TEU per la prima volta nel 2003. Ciò si confronta con una quota inferiore all'85% nel 2001-02, e con una quota inferiore al 70% nel 1998.

La Cina ha 40 fabbriche attive nella costruzione di box, controllate da più di 10 diversi gru o società. Oltre a costruire la grande maggioranza di tutto l'equipaggiamento containerizzato standard, i produttori cinesi costruiscono oggi oltre l'80% di tutti i TEU refrigerati. Essi stanno altresì facendo fronte a gran parte del (relativamente piccolo) fabbisogno di contenitori speciali per carichi secchi e ad una quota sempre maggiore di tutto l'equipaggiamento regionale. La Cina più recentemente ha dato inizio alla costruzione su grandi volumi anche di contenitori cisterna, con la CIMC anche qui all'avanguardia.

I produttori cinesi di box hanno adesso fatto fuori quasi tutta la concorrenza seria d'oltremare. Le sole fabbriche di box standard di una qual certa dimensione che ancora operano al di fuori della Cina sono tre nel sud-est asiatico, una delle quali (la PT Java Pacific) appartiene alla Singamas. Nel 2003 si prevedeva che esse producessero complessivamente oltre 75.000 TEU. Quasi tutta l'altra produzione asiatica, cioè quella di Taiwan, India e Corea del Sud, è ora cessata. La Corea del Sud, che in precedenza aveva guidato l'industria produttrice di containers per oltre 15 anni, dalla fine degli anni '70 ai primi anni '90, alla fine è uscita dall'attività all'inizio del 2003, quando ha chiuso l'ultima fabbrica residua (gestita dalla Jindo).

Le ditte europee hanno perso terreno allo stesso modo, e le poche sopravvissute ora si concentrano per lo più sulla produzione di speciali ed in particolare di swapbodies. La produzione totale attesa dell'intera Europa era inferiore agli 80.000 TEU nel 2003, compresi 20.000 TEU di refrigerati provenienti dalla fabbrica danese della Maersk. La maggior parte dei paesi in Europa Orientale si sono già ritirati dal settore della fabbricazione di box nell'insieme. La produzione si è ancor più rarefatta altrove nel mondo, e gran parte delle rimanenti unità è costituita da contenitori cisterna dal Sudafrica e da alcuni contenitori interni costruiti nelle Americhe.

Complessivamente appena 175.000 TEU nel 2003 avrebbero dovuto essere costruiti da tutte le fabbriche situate al di fuori della Cina, di cui almeno il 50% riguardavano tipi speciali. Ciò in confronto alle maggiori consegne per 320.000 TEU nel corso del 2000, il che equivale ad una riduzione della produzione di quasi il 50% nel corso degli ultimi tre anni. Al contrario, la produzione cinese è aumentata di un ulteriore 20% nel corso dello stesso periodo e ci si aspettava che raggiungesse i due milioni di TEU per la prima volta nel 2003. Questa cifra comprenderà grosso modo 1,9 milioni di TEU di unità marittime per carichi secchi, 100.000 TEU di refrigerati e circa 1.500 contenitori cisterna. Il resto della produzione cinese comprende diverse migliaia di contenitori pallet-wide, swapbody ed interni nordamericani.

L'industria cinese della fabbricazione di box da tempo dispone di forza sufficiente per poter dettare i prezzi dei contenitori nuovi, sebbene il suo recente continuo consolidamento abbia ulteriormente contribuito a stabilizzare un regime di prezzi che in precedenza era lungi dall'essere stabile. I prezzi cinesi, successivamente al loro spettacolare collasso alla fine degli anni '90, hanno continuato a fluttuare ampiamente per tutto il mercato ciclico del 2000-2001. Nel corso di quel periodo, i prezzi dei box standard dapprima avevano raggiunto il culmine di oltre 1.500 dollari USA (franco fabbrica per un 20 piedi) alla fine del 2000 e poi erano calati al loro punto inferiore trentennale, per 1.150 dollari USA (per un 20 piedi), all'inizio del 2002.

Tuttavia, dopo la ripresa da questo calo iniziale, i prezzi da allora tendenzialmente sono rimasti nella fascia fra 1.350 e 1.450 dollari, mostrando così una mobilità meno spettacolare che in passato. Questa maggiore stabilità dei prezzi è stata mantenuta malgrado il recente aumento della domanda ed alcuni movimenti stagionali nell'ambito del costo dell'acciaio e di altri materiali, e può essere attribuito all'approccio maggiormente misurato adottato dalla maggior parte dei principali produttori.

Potrebbe sembrare che i prezzi siano ancora bassi, ma l'industria cinese produttrice di box si trova senza dubbio in condizioni finanziarie migliori di quelle degli anni precedenti. Molte società hanno riferito di avere conseguito guadagni in ordine ai profitti nel corso del 2003. I nomi più rinomati, ancora una volta capeggiati dalla CIMC e dalla Singamas, hanno migliorato le proprie prestazioni mediante l'introduzione di ulteriori misure inerenti all'efficienza ed all'ulteriore espansione della propria capacità produttiva, allo scopo di ottenere economie di scala straordinarie.

La CIMC ha aggiunto due nuove fabbriche di box standard (a Zhangzhou e Yantian) nel corso del 2003 ad una rete che già comprendeva otto impianti per carichi secchi e due per refrigerati, e sta programmando l'apertura di un'altra nuova fabbrica (a Ningbo) all'inizio del 2004. Questa ditta ha inoltre recentemente acquisito una quota di partecipazione maggioritaria in un impianto già esistente (a Shanghai). La sua capacità complessiva installata è aumentata di quasi il 50% nel corso dell'anno passato, sino ad oltre 1,6 milioni di TEU/anno. Ci si aspettava che la produzione del gruppo raggiungesse il milione di TEU nel 2003, dal momento che le unità per carichi secchi e refrigerate sono aumentate rispetto ai 750.000 TEU realizzati nel corso del 2002. Essa già controlla oltre il 45% del mercato produttivo di box.

La Singamas ha allo stesso modo aggiunto una notevole capacità nel corso del 2003, ed ora proclama una capacità di costruzione di oltre 600.000 TEU all'anno. Anch'essa ha aperto una nuova fabbrica (a Qingdao) nel corso del 2003, che si è andata ad aggiungere alla rete esistente della ditta, costituita da sette fabbriche per carichi secchi ed una per refrigerati. Questa ditta avrebbe dovuto fabbricare oltre 400.000 TEU nel 2003, quanto ai tipi sopra citati, rispetto ai 300.000 TEU nel 2002.

Un altro affermato gruppo di costruzione dei box è la Jindo Corp, che, malgrado la chiusura delle proprie operazioni coreane, tiene ancora in funzione tre fabbriche in Cina. Queste offrono una capacità annua di quasi 200.000 TEU. Ci si aspettava che la loro produzione raggiungesse i 100.000 TEU nel 2003, almeno un quarto dei quali avrebbe dovuto essere costituito da tipi locali. Il rivale tradizionale coreano della Jindo, la Hyundai Mobis, sta ora tenendo in funzione una sola fabbrica nella Provincia di Guangdong e ci aspettava che consegnasse sino a 100.000 TEU nel 2003. La società aveva in precedenza venduto due fabbriche, a Qingdao e Shanghai, rispettivamente alla CIMC ed alla Singamas.

Due altri importanti nomi sono la CXIC (Changzhou Xinhuachang International Containers) e la Suzhou Asia Group. Quest'ultima gestisce due fabbriche in Cina, in seguito all'inizio delle proprie operazioni a Lianyungang nel 2002. Essa attualmente offre una capacità complessiva annua di 135.000 TEU e nel 2003 dovrebbe aver costruito oltre 110.000 TEU. La CXIC ha altresì ampliato le proprie operazioni, in seguito all'apertura di una nuova fabbrica a Ningbo. Questa va ad aggiungersi ai suoi attuali impianti nei pressi di Shanghai e ha dato impulso alla propria capacità annua sino a quasi 200.000 TEU. Si prevedeva che la produzione derivante da questo gruppo raggiungesse i 100.000 TEU per la prima volta nel 2003. Il resto della produzione in tutta la Cina viene espletato da qualcosa come una mezza dozzina di altre fabbriche e si prevedeva per il 2003 che esse realizzassero grosso modo 200.000 TEU.
