L'evoluzione dei trattori terminalistici

I principali fabbricatori di trattori terminalistici continuano a perfezionare i propri prodotti al fine di soddisfare sia gli utenti finali che i requisiti di legge. Il miglioramento delle condizioni ergonomiche all'interno della cabina del conduttore ha costituito una priorità-chiave, così come la valorizzazione delle prestazioni ambientali. Anche le questioni relative alla sicurezza sono state affrontate in maniera più esauriente nel corso degli ultimi anni, col risultato che molte più macchine adesso soddisfano gli standard Rops (relativi alle strutture protettive), ad esempio.

Attualmente, sembra che vi siano pochi incentivi per i produttori di trattori terminalistici a realizzare macchine di nuova generazione che cerchino di allargare i confini di ciò che è tecnicamente possibile. Gli operatori in genere appaiono soddisfatti delle prestazioni offerte dalle macchine dell'attuale generazione e, in ogni caso, spesso debbono lavorare nel contesto di limitazioni finanziarie, che possono significare che l'utilizzazione di soluzioni tecniche maggiormente sofisticate non rappresentano un'opzione attuabile.

Come osserva Mike Doane, direttore vendite della FL Douglas, "gli operatori dispongono di budgets limitati e perciò debbono effettuare acquisti nell'ambito di questi ultimi. Ciò significa che essi non sempre acquistano i trattori dotati delle specifiche più perfezionate per far fronte alle proprie esigenze operative". Forse, qui si tratta di consapevolezza della realtà commerciale. La Douglas non ha fatto uscire nessun nuovo modello di trattore terminalistico nel recente passato.

La Kalmar Industries continua a svolgere un ruolo-guida nel contesto del settore dei trattori terminalistici, attraverso entrambi i suoi marchi Kalmar ed Ottawa. Ci sono state poche modifiche tecniche agli affermati trattori terminalistici Kalmar PT122 ed Ottawa 50 della società, che sono diffusamente usati in tutto il mondo nei terminal contenitori lo-lo.

Tuttavia, la società ha recentemente migliorato la propria gamma di trattori ro-ro. In particolare, l'unità TRX182 4x4 è stata ammodernata affinché ricomprendesse un certo numero di nuove caratteristiche e di funzioni migliorate. Questo nuovo modello adesso presenta una cabina di nuova progettazione con un aspetto più moderno, che comprende una impostazione interna progettata per agevolare l'accesso al servizio ed ai punti di manutenzione.

E' stato altresì incorporato un certo numero di ulteriori caratteristiche di sicurezza e la nuova cabina è stata collaudata al fine di far sì che essa soddisfi gli standard Rops. La cabina è ora disponibile con un certo numero di nuove opzioni, tra cui un'incastellatura per la sospensione della cabina, il vetro laterale dalla parte del conducente elettrico ed una elegante nuova luce sul tetto.

La Kalmar dichiara di sperare di riuscire - con queste modifiche - a rimanere davanti alla concorrenza nel settore dei trattori terminalistici. La società afferma di essere stata la prima a sviluppare la concezione del trattore ro-ro, pioniera nel campo del sistema idraulico ad assetto variabile e di avere offerto un sistema attivo di inclinazione sulla quinta ruota prima di qualsiasi suo rivale. Più di 4.000 trattori terminalistici sono stati ora costruiti presso la fabbrica di Tampere (in Finlandia) della Kalmar e la maggior parte di essi sono stati destinati ad utilizzazioni di tipo ro-ro.

La società sta attualmente sperimentando elevati livelli di domanda nell'ambito del mercato per trattori terminalistici convenzionali e ha un certo numero di contratti a larga scala nel proprio registro ordinazioni. Nel primo trimestre dell'anno, la Kalmar ha ricevuto ordinazioni relative alla fornitura di 54 unità Ottawa 50 alla PSA Corporation di Singapore e di 36 macchine dello stesso tipo al porto di Shanghai, in Cina. Anche il trattore PT122 della Kalmar ha avuto una forte domanda, ed i contratti nei primi tre mesi di quest'anno hanno compreso 31 macchine della DPA (Autorità Portuale di Dubai) e 10 dell'infrastruttura dello stesso cliente presso il porto di Gibuti.

La Kalmar dichiara di avere scoperto qualche piccolo ma interessante cambiamento nelle preferenze dei clienti. Le ordinazioni sia della PSA che della DPA, ad esempio, hanno specificato l'esigenza di unità con quinta ruota non sopraelevante e questo, osserva la Kalmar, sembra essere diventato più comune nei terminals con prestazioni da alti volumi.

Si tratta di una caratteristica che viene offerta dalla Kalmar già da qualche tempo. Tuttavia, essa è stata migliorata mediante l'introduzione di elementi di gomma elastica per assorbire i colpi da caricazione quando si solleva un contenitore su un semirimorchio.

Dal momento che i carichi medi dei contenitori sono aumentati, di conseguenza la Kalmar nota come sia cresciuta anche la domanda relativa agli assali posteriori dei trattori terminalistici. In risposta, la Kalmar precisa che adesso essa offre assali per compiti pesanti per tutti i propri trattori terminalistici utilizzabili a scopi lo-lo.

Anche il produttore olandese MOL sta usufruendo di un avvio del 2004 alquanto attivo. La società ha fornito due potenti trattori 4x4 multi-trailer TG280 allo MCT (Medcenter Container Terminal) di Gioia Tauro a marzo di quest'anno. Queste unità, che presentano un trailer automatico agganciato per mezzo di strumenti meccanici e pneumatici, sono una versione migliorata del progetto originariamente fornito allo ECT nel 1996. Dotati dell'ultimo motore DAF XE315C Euro 3, in grado di generare 315 kW a 1900 giri al minuto, i trattori hanno una velocità massima di 32 km/h e possono fornire 225 kN di potenza di trazione.

I trattori multi-trailer della MCT propongono altresì una cabina migliorata a due posti, caratterizzata da un sedile del conduttore adattabile. L'impostazione della cabina offre un alto grado di visibilità agli operatori, che sono protetti da un vetro di sicurezza, mentre le condizioni di lavoro sono state migliorate per mezzo di una copertura del pavimento con un tappetino di gomma fonoassorbente.

Inoltre, la sta producendo complessivamente 47 trattori terminalistici del tipo YT200 per la IPA (Autorità Portuale Israeliana) che saranno impiegati nei porti di Ashdod e Haifa. Circa una trentina sono già stati consegnati alla IPA, mentre i restanti seguiranno quest'estate. Con una velocità massima di 37 km/h e 200 kN di potenza di trazione, queste unità sono caratterizzate da una quinta ruota con capacità da 34.000 kg e sono state realizzate in modo da soddisfare le specifiche richieste dalla IPA.

La MOL ha altresì ricevuto ordinazioni per 35 trattori dagli scali di Port Said e Sokhna in Egitto, nonché 10 dal Malta Freeport. Ulteriori contratti minori sono arrivati da clienti nello Yemen, in Belgio, in Francia, nei Paesi Bassi e nel Regno Unito. Di conseguenza, il registro ordinazioni della MOL per un po' di tempo sarà al completo, mentre la produzione attualmente è attestata ad un trattore terminalistico al giorno.

Nello sforzo di far fronte alla domanda, la MOL ha recentemente costruito una nuova infrastruttura produttiva da 7.500 metri quadrati presso il suo impianto già esistente. Di conseguenza, la società afferma ora di essere in grado di produrre oltre 200 trattori terminalistici all'anno.

Il produttore olandese Terberg ha ricevuto una delle maggiori ordinazioni di trattori terminalistici effettuata di recente nel Regno Unito. Il Thamesport ha ordinato 11 nuove unità YT 220 al fabbricante olandese a marzo di quest'anno e quattro di esse sono già operative. Le restanti sette dovrebbero essere consegnate a settembre.

La partita iniziale dei trattori della Terberg sarà noleggiata dalla Thamesport tramite la Barloworld, mentre l'ultima consegna è in corso di acquisizione tutta in una volta attraverso la Transtec Equipment.

Questi trattori terminalistici sono adatti alla movimentazione di pesi sino a 75 tonnellate. Tutti quanto sono costruiti conformemente ad una concezione modulare, con cabine di sicurezza progettate ergonomicamente che rispettano i test di sicurezza Rops e Fops (Sistema di Protezione dagli Oggetti in Caduta). Il Thamesport ha altresì specificamente richiesto una tecnologia di motori a basse emissioni al fine di soddisfare gli standard ambientali.
