Emigrazione e turismo di crociera nei manifesti della Hapag-Lloyd

Si è svolta a Genova dal 12 al 30 ottobre, presso la sede dell'Autorità Portuale genovese, una mostra intitolata "Hamburg-Genova-New York - Emigrazione e turismo di crociera nei manifesti Hapag-Lloyd".

La manifestazione è stata organizzata dal C.I.S.Co. e ha riscosso un notevole successo di pubblico.

Le vie del mare, quelle della Storia e quelle dell'immaginazione s'intrecciano in questa mostra sui manifesti di pubblicità marittima della Hapag (Hamburg-Amerika Linie), in una vicenda, anzi in una catena di vicende, che cominciò oltre 150 anni fa, il 27 maggio 1847, quando un gruppo di mercanti amburghesi decise di fondare quella che sarebbe divenuta alla fine dell'Ottocento la più grande compagnia di navigazione del mondo. Al vertice del nuovo gruppo vennero posti Adolph Godeffroy, Ernst Merck e Ferdinand August Bolten, che fu anche il progettista delle prime navi della Hapag.

Lo scopo della creazione della Hapag era quello di inserirsi nei traffici mercantili e di passeggeri sulla sempre più decisiva rotta di New York. Il 15 ottobre 1848 un vascello, il Deutscheland partiva da Amburgo con destinazione America. Relativamente presto, i velieri vennero sostituiti dalle navi a vapore. Le prime due, la Hammonia e il Borussia, costruite in cantieri inglesi, vennero consegnate nella città hanseatica nel 1855 ed entrarono ben presto in servizio sulla rotta nordatlantica.

Erano allora soprattutto emigranti, coloro che intraprendevano il viaggio verso l'America; e fino ad allora la traversata era stata per loro un momento dolente e difficile: spesso costretti a occupare in venti una stanza, oppure acquartierati in alloggi alti appena un metro e 60, come ancora raccomandavano i regolamenti della Marina mercantile italiana del 1879. La Hapag riuscì a imporsi sul mercato internazionale proprio per una diversa concezione nel rapporto di accoglienza a bordo dei migrantes, ai quali venne da subito riservato un più umano trattamento, tentando di rendere più possibile piacevoli le condizioni del viaggio.

Già nel 1856 funzionava una tratta Amburgo-New York, che due anni dopo sarebbe divenuta bisettimanale. Una rotta regolare per New Orleans, con scalo a L'Avana, venne inaugurata nel 1867. Intorno al 1880, la Hapag decise di organizzare due sezioni separate, con navi di tipo diverso adatte a ciascuna necessità, per merci e passeggeri. Nel 1885 nasceva la "divisione passeggeri" e negli anni seguenti si giungeva ad accordi con le compagnie britanniche concorrenti, peraltro meno attrezzate per offrire un minimo di comfort ai passeggeri "di terza classe". Vaporiere sempre più veloci e capienti sfrecciavano intanto per l'Atlantico a tempo di record: la Fürst Bismarck nel 1892 traversò l'oceano in sei giorni e mezzo, nel 1900 la Deutscheland impiegò un giorno in meno.

"L'emigrante è la merce su cui si esercita la speculazione degli intermediari. La speculazione va a cercarlo nel tugurio per fargli balenare le speranze dell'avvenire, lo accompagna e lo sfrutta fino al porto d'imbarco, lo segue nella traversata e al suo arrivo lo consegna ad un'altra speculazione". Con queste parole del suo intervento parlamentare del 27 novembre 1900, il ministro Emilio Visconti-Venosta, uno dei politici più lucidi del suo tempo, presentava la prima seria legge italiana a tutela degli emigranti. La dichiarazione del ministro offre un'idea precisa della realtà piuttosto disperata dell'emigrazione in Italia al principio del secolo. Genova, che assorbì fra il 1876 e il 1901 oltre il 60% del flusso verso le Americhe, assisteva al bivacco delle persone in attesa di partire, che affollavano come vagabondi i portici di piazza Caricamento o trovavano asilo in stamberghe e sottoscala, affittate il più delle volte dal racket degli intermediari senza scrupoli.

La Hapag si mosse nei confronti dei migrantes con un'ottica assai attenta a rendere non soltanto meno sconfortante il viaggio, ma anche quella fase, assai delicata, che lo precedeva. Nel dicembre 1901, venne ultimata la costruzione di alcuni terminali per emigranti sull'isola di Veddel, che consentivano un più rapido imbarco soprattutto per chi arrivava dall'Est europeo. Si trattava di una sorta di piccola città, ampliata ancora nel 1907, in grado di ospitare un migliaio di persone e comprendente una chiesa.

Fin dal 1896, intanto, si saldava nel segno della Hapag un rapporto tra Amburgo e Genova destinato a continuare ancor oggi. Intenzionata a inserirsi nell'affare dell'emigrazione italiana, la compagnia di navigazione tedesca inaugurò una linea tra Genova e La Plata. La presenza germanica nella Superba di quegli anni era assai consistente, tanto che Sigmund Freud notò d'aver visto in questa città moltissime insegne in tedesco.

Attorno al 1895, Erasmo Piaggio - uno dei primi armatori in Italia a porsi il problema di più umane condizioni sulle navi degli emigranti - conduceva un'abile operazione finanziaria attirando capitali germanici sulla seconda Banca di Genova, da lui controllata e in forte difficoltà, trasformandola in quel Credito Italiano che con i suoi capitali sarebbe stato uno dei volani di sviluppo dell'industria italiana del primo Novecento.

L'approdo a Genova in quel '95 della tedesca Aeg, uno dei colossi della elettrotecnica europea d'allora, consentiva un deciso salto di qualità delle infrastrutture tramviarie a trazione elettrica, che raggiunsero i 50 chilometri. Per il Reich tedesco, in grande ascesa economica, Genova rappresentò in quella fase - e fino alla Grande Guerra - un importante punto di riferimento nell'Italia triplicista. E, anche grazie a società come la Hapag, molto significativa sarebbe stata "la presenza di una dirigenza tecnica e operativa di nazionalità tedesca che segnò in maniera massiccia la mentalità dei quadri delle compagnie italiane all'inizio del XX secolo" (Pierangelo Campodonico). Sull'asse con Amburgo e con l'Impero guglielmino, il capoluogo ligure avrebbe dunque vissuto capitoli significativi della propria belle époque industriale e marittima, ponendosi all'interno del Regno d'Italia come centro economico all'avanguardia.

Il primo manifesto Hapag in cui compare il nome di Genova risale al 1895 e riguardava il German Mediterranean Service, che toccava anche Napoli, Algeri, Gibilterra. Vengono riportati anche i nomi degli agenti marittimi della compagnia sotto la Lanterna, Leupold Fratelli (sic) e Federico Scerni. Un'immagine della città - uno scorcio di piazza Caricamento, con il monumento a Raffaele Rubattino ben visibile - compare in una "affiche" della Norddeutscher Lloyd (Ndl), Italien Reisen, del 1900. Singolarmente, la "cartolina" della piazza genovese si affaccia tra altri scorci, tutti spiccatamente turistici, di Roma, Firenze, Venezia, Napoli e Capri.

In quegli anni a cavaliere tra Ottocento e Novecento, al servizio per gli emigranti si andava infatti aggiungendo, per le compagnie hanseatiche e segnatamente per la Hapag, una attività crocieristica che consentiva di utilizzare la flotta - ben attrezzata allo scopo proprio in virtù della concezione umanitaria della "divisione passeggeri" - anche nelle fasi di "stanca" del flusso migratorio. Nel Mediterraneo, il ruolo di Genova in questa strategia crocieristica divenne centrale fin dai primi anni del secolo, arricchendo un rapporto già solido con Amburgo. Le linee per il Levante passavano dalla Superba e la Riviera ligure, negli anni Dieci, s'imponeva come una delle destinazioni turistiche predilette dal pubblico tedesco.

Fu un momento di grande fulgore per la marineria germanica e per la Hapag, che divenne la compagnia dei primati: sotto la direzione di Albert Ballin, fra il 1899 e il 1913, prima cioè della Grande Guerra, 175 navi trasportavano passeggeri e merci su 73 rotte, toccando ben quattrocento porti. Per espressa volontà del Kaiser e per impulso di Ballin, vennero costruiti vapori sempre più grandi.

L'Imperator fu la nave più grande del suo tempo, e lo stesso Guglielmo II volle vararla, il 23 maggio 1912, davanti a una plaudente folla: 280 metri di lunghezza, 30 di larghezza e 75 di altezza erano le dimensioni di uno scafo che costituiva l'orgoglio di una nazione che si sentiva chiamata a un destino molto importante. La tragedia del Titanic era troppo recente, quando l'Imperator intraprese il suo viaggio inaugurale nel giugno 1913, perché non venissero presi accorgimenti tanto nella gestione del comando a bordo (con un commodoro e quattro capitani) quanto dal punto di vista della tecnologia, con un sistema di chiusura dei compartimenti che poteva essere attivato direttamente dalla cabina.

Il primo conflitto mondiale segnò con una grave sconfitta la Germania, che dovette ridimensionare i propri piani di grandezza, a partire da quelli sul mare, che il trattato di pace mortificava in modo particolare. Consapevole dei rischi di una guerra per i traffici, Albert Ballin si era adoperato addirittura personalmente per tentare una mediazione diplomatica con la Gran Bretagna, ma senza risultati. La sua morte, nel 1918, era quasi il suggello della fine di un'epoca: se ne andava una figura-chiave della storia tedesca dell'età guglielmina. Ballin stesso aveva scelto un anno prima il proprio successore, Wilhelm Cuno, che si era in precedenza segnalato con funzioni direttive al ministero delle Finanze; e aveva motivato la propria decisione dicendo che era adesso necessario per una Hapag da rifondare e che usciva dalle macerie della guerra, avere alla guida un uomo operoso e lungimirante come Cuno.

A fine 1918, Hapag era effettivamente allo stremo. Le condizioni dei vincitori furono pesanti e la compagnia, costretta per le riparazioni di guerra a perdere la quasi totalità della flotta, si trovò sull'orlo del fallimento. L'accorta politica di Cuno, che avviò trattative e tentò intese con compagnie britanniche e americane, consentì un salvataggio che fu premessa del ripristino di tutte le linee Hapag di anteguerra, escluse quelle dell'Estremo Oriente, dove gli inglesi mantenevano il controllo. Già nel 1921 la situazione era migliorata e nel 1928 la flotta contava su 155 navi: il gruppo tornava a porsi come uno dei più importanti armatori al mondo. La crisi mondiale del 1929 investì però anche Hapag, che fu costretta a cedere il 20 per cento circa del naviglio (1931).

I primi anni Trenta costituirono un momento non particolarmente florido (soltanto nel 1936 venne programmata la costruzione di nuove navi), anche se il nuovo governo nazionalsocialista - che insediò tra l'altro suoi uomini nella compagnia - era interessato alla crescita delle prospettive marittime germaniche forse ancor più del Reich guglielmino. In questo momento, presero crescente impulso le crociere, come mostrano i variopinti manifesti dell'epoca, per i quali si può forse parlare di uno "stile Hapag". Molti di questi cartelloni sono dedicati alle crociere dell'America latina e su queste rotte entrò in servizio nel 1938 un'altra grande nave, la Patria. Nella seconda metà degli anni Trenta, la rotta nordamericana è invece piuttosto "di rappresentanza" che di vero interesse economico.

Ma occorreva reagire, per ragioni di prestigio, alla corsa avviata dai francesi (con la Normandie) e dai britannici (con la Queen Mary) nella costruzione di autentici giganti del mare. Venne così allestita la Vaterland - 36 mila tonnellate, lunga 250 metri e larga 30: dimensioni che solo in parte riprendevano quelle, maestose, dell'Imperator - che fu al centro di un intenso "battage" pubblicitario, ma che poté lasciare i cantieri, e non del tutto rifinita, soltanto nel 1940. Sarebbe stata bombardata nel '43.

I settori del traffico marittimo erano strategici per la Germania, come per qualunque paese che avesse ambizioni di potenza, e l'orgoglio nazionalistico non si misurava soltanto con le corazzate, ma anche con i transatlantici. Il regime andò anche fiero, fino alla tragica conclusione del suo ciclo con il disastro del '36, del dirigibile Zeppelin, il colosso dell'aria legato allo sviluppo di quel settore del trasporto aereo che, come quello fluviale, la Hapag aveva cominciato a intraprendere.

Lo sforzo sul piano della comunicazione e della promozione si fece, negli anni Trenta, perentorio. Uno dei più grandi documentaristi tedeschi, già collaboratore di Fritz Lang, Walter Ruttmann - autore tra l'altro di film memerabili Berlino, sinfonia di una città e, in Italia, Acciaio, sugli stabilimenti di Terni - venne ingaggiato nel '36 per realizzare Melodie dal mondo, sorta di delicato "diario di bordo" crocieristico, con scorci di tante coste e di tanti paesi.

Il 1945 rappresentò un crollo ancor più terribile per la Germania e la Hapag di quanto non fosse stato quello del 1918. La compagnia venne quasi interamente smantellata, per risarcire gli Alleati: furono 21 le navi che dovettero essere cedute. Non riuscì del tutto a sollevarsi neppure nel 1951, quando le restrizioni alle compagnie tedesche vennero allentate. Fra il '53 e il '56 vennero riattivate le linee verso il Nord e Centro America, verso la costa pacifica del Sud e verso altri paesi. Soltanto nel 1958 prese invece il mare una nuova nave da crociera, la Ariadne, dal bianco profilo.

Il trasporto di passeggeri verso l'America andava intanto declinando. A metà degli anni Sessanta, la concorrenza dei voli economici restrinse molto i margini di guadagno in questo settore. All'interno della compagnia si aprì un dibattito intenso tra i fautori di questa fascia di mercato, in relativa sofferenza, e quelli del trasporto merci. In effetti, risultava ora economicamente interessante soprattutto il servizio con nuove navi combinate verso l'Asia orientale, che potevano ospitare anche una novantina di passeggeri. Dagli anni Sessanta, l'impulso maggiore della compagnia fu condotto nella direzione di un perfezionamento dei livelli tecnici e tecnologici del trasporto merci.

Quando nel 1970, dopo una lunga storia parallela, la Hapag e la Norddeutscheland Lloyd si fondevano, le navi della Ndl vennero destinate alle crociere, che cominciavano a diventare un oggetto di consumo di massa. In servizio dal 1999, Europa 6 avrebbe poi rappresentato un ulteriore salto di qualità, in direzione del comfort e del lusso, del modo di concepire viaggi e crociere da parte di Hapag.

Sempre più attiva nel campo dei trasporti e della logistica, con un proprio servizio di linea di container, la compagnia hanseatica ha riaffermato negli ultimi decenni la sua importante presenza mondiale. E anche a Genova, che continua a essere un punto importante nello scacchiere della Hapag nel Mediterraneo, in un rapporto d'amicizia e collaborazione che ormai da tempo ha traguardato il secolo.
