Difficile momento per il noleggio di contenitori

Il settore del noleggio di contenitori, che da tempo si trova in una difficile situazione, deve ancora affrontare un incerto futuro, dato che sta per cominciare il suo quarto anno consecutivo di ribasso. Le società di noleggio stanno infatti sopportando un mercato depresso sin dalla fine del 1995, allorquando la domanda di equipaggiamento noleggiato iniziò rapidamente a calare. Da allora, le fortune di molti noleggiatori non si sono mai riprese per davvero, anche se la crescita annua dei traffici è rimasta generalmente sostenuta (almeno fino al 1998) ed i vettori marittimi hanno ricevuto in consegna un numero record di nuove portacontainers.

Come si evince dai dati contenuti nell'ultima indagine annuale sul settore del noleggio di contenitori a livello mondiale pubblicata con il titolo di Analisi di mercato di Containerisation International, le prospettive per il 1999 per i noleggiatori non sono proprio rosee. La possibilità di realizzare profitti per molti operatori rappresenta ora un'illusione, mentre il consolidamento resta una priorità-chiave. Tuttavia, le possibilità di conseguire ulteriori economie di scala operative stanno diventando sempre più limitate.

Un problema-chiave è rappresentato dalla diminuzione delle tariffe di noleggio medie giornaliere. Queste ultime sono calate di più del 30% nei quattro anni che hanno seguito il 1995 e di più del 10% dal 1997 e recentemente hanno raggiunto il loro punto più basso degli ultimi 20 anni. Il declino è stato così grande che le attuali tariffe di noleggio master sono poco diverse da quelle ottenibili per un noleggio a lungo termine quadriennale in relazione ad un equipaggiamento equivalente. Gran parte dei noleggiatori, di conseguenza, non sono stati in grado di incrementare negli ultimi anni il proprio giro d'affari annuo, malgrado il notevole aumento delle dimensioni e del valore delle proprie flotte di equipaggiamento.

L'utilizzazione media ha fatto registrare una simile tendenza verso il basso. Essa è sprofondata bruscamente nel 1996, si è ripresa brevemente nel 1997 e poi è calata addirittura più di prima sino a raggiungere livelli che non venivano registrati sin dalla metà degli anni '80. L'utilizzazione, a dispetto di una piccola ripresa nel corso del secondo trimestre del 1999, è stata recentemente calcolata a meno dell'80% per l'intera flotta di box noleggiati, con una percentuale del settore per carichi secchi vicina al 75%. Il punto di rottura (per il settore nel suo complesso) viene generalmente indicato attorno all'80%. Più di 1,25 milioni di TEU sono attualmente fuori noleggio rispetto ad una flotta complessiva di quasi sei milioni di TEU.

Anche i prezzi dei contenitori nuovi sono scesi nel corso degli ultimi quattro anni e ad un ritmo persino più rapido rispetto a quello delle tariffe di noleggio. Tuttavia, ciò ha comportato vantaggi solamente per quelle ditte di noleggio di containers che sono state in grado di impegnarsi recentemente in cospicui programmi di investimento in equipaggiamenti. Anche in questi casi, peraltro, il declino dei prezzi medi di box nuovi è stato così rapido che i containers acquistati dai noleggiatori dal 1997 in poi hanno un costo di deprezzamento maggiore di quello pagato per il nuovo equipaggiamento che ora esce dalle fabbriche. E tutto questo affligge non solo le ditte affermate, ma anche i nuovi entrati sul mercato, quali la Gateway Container International e la Capital Lease.

Il continuo movimento verso il basso dei prezzi ha comportato un forte impatto sull'intero settore del noleggio di contenitori, nel senso che ha seriamente eroso il valore della sua flotta containerizzata negli ultimi anni. Il numero complessivo dei TEU relativi a containers in noleggio operativo può anche essere aumentato di più del 50% nei cinque anni a partire dalla metà del 1994, ma il suo costo di sostituzione, basato sugli attuali prezzi prevalenti, è a mala pena cambiato. Il valore è rimasto fermo, anche se i vettori cumulativamente hanno investito 7 miliardi di dollari in nuovo equipaggiamento containerizzato nel corso degli ultimi cinque anni ed attualmente sono impegnati nel loro più ingente acquisto di TEU, partito nel 1997-98.

I prezzi dei contenitori nuovi (malgrado gli ultimi promettenti segnali in ordine alla possibilità che essi siano prossimi a stabilizzarsi) sono diminuiti del 40% rispetto al loro punto più alto del 1995. Essi sono calati di oltre il 20% negli ultimi due anni, da circa 1.800 dollari USA (per un 20 piedi standard proveniente dalla Cina) fino a 1.400 dollari USA. Questo declino deve essere preso in considerazione unitamente alle tabelle di deprezzamento utilizzate dalla maggior parte delle società di noleggio, che indicano il 6-7% circa all'anno rispetto al costo originario dell'equipaggiamento (equivalente ad un periodo prima della rottamazione pari ad approssimativamente 15 anni).

Ciò conferma che il nuovo equipaggiamento, fresco di fabbrica, ha un costo minore (e può perciò dettare una tariffa di noleggio più competitiva) rispetto a qualsiasi cosa costruita nel 1997 o prima. La situazione è naturalmente peggiore per i noleggiatori in possesso di equipaggiamento fornito nel 1994-95, dato che gran parte di esso era stato acquistato al prezzo astronomico di circa 2.300-2.400 dollari per 20 piedi. Tali unità sono ancor più penalizzate dal deprezzamento se confrontate con l'attuale produzione.

La situazione è stata resa tanto più difficile dal fatto che gli affittuari tendono sempre a scegliere l'equipaggiamento nuovo rispetto a quello vecchio, anche quando non vi sono incentivi di costo allettanti. Sorprende poco, pertanto, che i vettori marittimi siano stati prontissimi negli ultimi mesi ad accettare nuovi marchi di contenitori sulla base di allettanti accordi di noleggio a termine, restituendo nel contempo ai proprietari quanto più possibile del proprio vecchio equipaggiamento.

Il problema principale si accentra sulla ricommercializzazione dell'equipaggiamento containerizzato usato, una volta scaduto il suo periodo di noleggio iniziale, nonché la contrattazione di nuovi contratti secondo tariffe accettabili. Com'era prevedibile, il settore del noleggio master è quello che è stato colpito più duramente, dal momento che l'equipaggiamento coinvolto in questi contratti viene spesso noleggiato per periodi relativamente brevi e può essere restituito nel giro di soli 1-2 anni dall'acquisto originario. Di modo che, quantitativi notevoli di nuovo equipaggiamento assegnato al noleggio master nel 1997 sono già divenuti disponibili per il rinoleggio, ma a tariffe ribassate.

Il settore del noleggio master ha sofferto le maggiori erosioni del livello tariffario e le più brusche diminuzioni di utilizzazione. Anche i noleggiatori che stipulano contratti di noleggio master hanno assistito alla scalata delle proprie spese, dato che l'esigenza di riposizionare gli equipaggiamenti da punti di fine noleggio stagnanti in Nordamerica ed in Europa alla volta dei "punti caldi" di domanda asiatici è cresciuta rapidamente. Questa tendenza si è incrementata nel corso del 1998 e nel 1999, dato che molti paesi Asiatici hanno notevolmente aumentato le proprie esportazioni e peraltro tagliato nuovamente le importazioni, generando pertanto squilibri commerciali.

La necessità di recuperare i containers a costi fino a 400 dollari per unità da "località-cimitero" ha solo aggiunto problemi per la crescente flotta dei noleggiatori. Molte unità costruite recentemente nel 1997 (così come in anni precedenti) sono non solo "sopravalutate" rispetto al nuovo equipaggiamento di marca, ma giacciono arenate nei depositi di tutta l'Europa e degli Stati Uniti. Gran parte di esse devono sopportare spese di deposito, sino ad 1 dollaro al giorno in alcune località.

Alcuni noleggiatori hanno affrontato il problema dirottando fisicamente le loro scorte di contenitori nelle zone di domanda, e persino su scala più larga utilizzando tonnellaggio noleggiato. Sia la GESeaCo che la Textainer hanno fatto ricorso a tale espediente negli ultimi mesi; la prima ha impiegato due navi per ricollocare circa 5.000 TEU ogni mese. Come ha spiegato Rob Ward, presidente e dirigente capo della GESeaCo, questa mossa è stata considerata necessaria al fine di ottenere un migliore servizio per la domanda dei clienti, riducendo nel contempo la gestione a lungo termine unitamente con la gestione dell'equipaggiamento più obsoleto di scorta. Essa inoltre diminuisce l'esigenza del noleggiatore di continuare ad acquistare boxes in zone di domanda relativamente alta, come la Cina.

L'iniziativa "Tradex 1", lanciata recentemente dalla TAL (Transamerica Leasing), è finalizzata a conseguire grosso modo lo stesso obiettivo e, segnatamente, a far sì che l'equipaggiamento fermo e vecchio ricominci a muoversi. Le argomentazioni della Tradex vertono sul fatto che è preferibile piazzare i containers a noleggio a tariffe minime, di modo che almeno contribuiscano al fatturato, piuttosto che lasciarli fuori noleggio ad ingenerare ricavi negativi a causa delle spese di deposito.

La TAL (che fa ora parte del Gruppo Dutch AEGON) inizialmente ha reso disponibili circa 70.000 TEU delle proprie unità per carichi secchi più vecchie per un noleggio a basso costo mediante il Tradex (che si basa su Internet). Questo equipaggiamento è stato noleggiato a tariffe basse sino a 0,3 dollari al giorno e si dice che l'iniziativa nel suo complesso abbia migliorato il tasso di utilizzazione della società. La maggior parte degli altri operatori di prima linea sta attentamente sorvegliando gli sviluppi del Tradex.

Un altro modo ovvio di affrontare il problema delle scorte di equipaggiamento è quello di accelerare il ritmo al quale i contenitori più vecchi vengono ritirati dalla flotta noleggiata. Anche qui, i due nomi di punta (GESeaCo e TAL) hanno aperto la strada e non è stata cosa di poco conto, poiché essi dispongono di alcune delle più grandi scorte di equipaggiamento più vecchio. Le dismissioni annue dalla flotta noleggiata sono rapidamente aumentate nel 1997 fino a più di 300.000 TEU e le due ditte principali si sono liberate di più di 350.000 TEU complessivamente nel corso del biennio 1997-98. Anche gli altri, tra cui la Textainer, la Triton, la Cronos e la Florens, hanno incrementato il proprio ritmo di dismissioni a partire dal 1997. Il tasso di dismissioni annue dei noleggiatori prima del 1997 era attestato a circa 220.000.

E' probabile che le dismissioni dalla flotta noleggiata calino un poco nel corso del 1999, sebbene ci si aspetti che il loro numero cresca rapidamente dal 2000 in poi. Uno dei fattori che comporteranno tale conseguenza è la previsione che le valutazioni dei containers dovranno cambiare sulla scia della recente brusca diminuzione dei prezzi delle unità di nuova costruzione. Si sa che alcuni noleggiatori di punta stanno prendendo in considerazione l'apporto di modifiche alle proprie schede di ammortamento, al fine di consentire alle unità più vecchie di essere dismesse subito (perdendo alla svelta, perciò, il loro valore residuo). Si parla, ad esempio, di un periodo di durata pari a 12 anni (equivalente ad un deprezzamento annuo dell'8% circa) in luogo dell'attuale 6-7% su 14-15 anni.

Ciò dovrebbe senza dubbio contrastare l'anomalia del possedere equipaggiamento più vecchio con un valore più elevato di quello nuovo. Tuttavia, qualsiasi aggiustamento in tal senso potrebbe rivelarsi doloroso, dal momento che esso richiede alle imprese di assorbire una grossa perdita di capitale una tantum. Esso, poi, capiterebbe in un momento in cui molte ditte di noleggio stavano valutando la possibilità di espandere (piuttosto che di ridimensionare) i propri tassi di deprezzamento, in conseguenza del fatto che i containers di costruzione più recente tendono a durare più a lungo in servizio rispetto all'equipaggiamento precedente.

Un altro metodo collaudato che viene utilizzato per combattere l'eccesso di offerta, la diminuzione dei ricavi ed i costi insostenibili è costituito dall'acquisizione di flotte già sul mercato, normalmente per mezzo di fusioni. Un numero record di containers è stato trasferito tra società di noleggio nel corso egli ultimi due anni. Quattro transazioni di dimensioni considerevoli sono state concluse dall'inizio del 1998 e hanno comportato un ulteriore consolidamento tra società di primo piano.

Come rivela la Tabella 2, il 77% circa dei TEU in noleggio operativo è ora controllato dai cinque più grandi gruppi di noleggio di box, mentre anche la quota detenuta dalle 10 società maggiori è aumentata rispetto al 1997. Le stesse prime cinque principali entità attualmente detengono il 70% circa dei beni/TEU noleggiati in termini finanziari. Un anno prima (alla metà del 1998) le prime cinque società/gruppi possedevano una quota minore (70%) di TEU e solo il 65% in termini finanziari.

Il raggiungimento di un consolidamento mediante fusioni resta allettante per i principali operatori del settore, dato che li mette in condizione di conseguire ulteriori economie di scala, guadagnando altresì quote di mercato, senza aggiungere nuovo equipaggiamento alle scorte esistenti. Fino ad oggi, si sono verificate più di 40 fusioni tra società di noleggio, secondo i dati contenuti nell'Analisi di mercato di Containerisation International, che hanno comportato il coinvolgimento di più di 4,4 milioni di TEU. Circa due terzi di tutte le transazioni hanno avuto luogo a partire dal 1990.

La più grossa transazione degli ultimi 18 mesi è stata costituita dalla fusione della ex flotta della Genstar (di proprietà della GE Capital) con quella posseduta dalla Sea Containers, al fine di costituire la GESeaCo. Questo accordo è stato concluso alla metà del 1998, dopo molti mesi di trattative e ha portato più di 1,1 milioni di TEU relativi a contenitori standard e speciali sotto il controllo della nuova gestione. Quest'ultima opera attraverso la sede londinese della Sea Containers.

Circa il 70% di questa flotta proviene dalla GE, in termini di valore, mentre il restante 30% proviene dalla Sea Containers. Tutti i futuri investimenti, effettuati per conto della GESeaCo, dovranno essere ripartiti al 50% tra i due soci. Ward ha spiegato che le due flotte da quel momento sono state integrate e che le economie operative ora interagiscono.

Più o meno nello stesso periodo in cui è stata costituita la GESeaCo, la Interpool ha acquistato una quota del 50% nella CAI, collegando perciò queste due società di primo piano in una entità singola che controlla quasi 700.000 TEU; la relativa flotta, da allora, è aumentata sino a 830.000 TEU. La Interpool attualmente detiene circa 520.000 TEU (per lo più in noleggio a lungo termine), mentre la CAI ne ha 310.000 (per lo più in noleggio master). L'obiettivo, in questo caso, è quello di fornire uno sfogo di noleggio master per i contenitori più vecchi della Interpool che terminano l'attività di noleggio a lungo termine, consentendo nel contempo alla CAI di conseguire un'economia di scala operativa maggiore di quella che potrebbe ottenere attraverso una semplice crescita organica.

La Textainer è sempre stata uno dei soggetti maggiormente dediti alle acquisizioni tra tutti i noleggiatori. Essa ha assunto il controllo gestionale della flotta di 55.000 TEU noleggiata dalla PrimeSource nell'aprile del 1998, e subito dopo ha dato inizio alle trattative con la Xtra Corp in ordine ad un rilevamento gestionale simile riguardo alla flotta di box marittimi, pari a 230.000 TEU, di quest'ultima. Tali trattative hanno fatto seguito ad un precedente fallito tentativo da parte della Interpool (congiuntamente alla Apollo Management) di ricapitalizzare ed assumere il controllo dell'intero gruppo Xtra.

Di fatto, l'associazione Interpool/Apollo si è sciolta alla fine del 1998 e la Textainer ha portato a compimento i propri piani relativi alla Xtra nello scorso mese di aprile, procedendo alla fusione nel mese di giugno. Sebbene la fusione di equipaggiamento containerizzato noleggiato mediante accordi di gestione sia del tutto nuova, il patto della Textainer con la Xtra è uno dei pochi casi in cui l'equipaggiamento sia stato procurato presso un concorrente che rimane in attività in altri campi correlati. Malgrado la chiusura della Xtra International (branca della società per il noleggio di contenitori marittimi), la Xtra Corp continua ad effettuare servizi per i mercati del noleggio interno/intermodale statunitense, che costituisce la sua attività primaria.

Sotto molti aspetti, il contratto della Textainer con la Xtra è simile a quello dell'accordo della GESeaCo, dato che in questo caso la Sea Containers (attraverso la GESeaCo) gestisce beni noleggiati per conto della GE. Entrambi gli accordi differiscono dalla maggior parte delle precedenti transazioni, compreso l'assorbimento della flotta della PrimeSource da parte della Textainer, il rilevamento dell'equipaggiamento della Trans Ocean Ltd da parte della TAL e la precedente acquisizione della flotta della Matson Leasing ad opera della stessa Xtra. In tutti questi casi, la fusione ha comportato la scomparsa del soggetto "più debole" la cui flotta è stata acquistata.

L'integrazione della flotta della Xtra con i già notevoli possedimenti della Textainer ha fatto compiere alle dimensioni complessive della sua flotta un ulteriore balzo del 35% sino a quasi 850.000 TEU e le ha assicurato la terza posizione in classifica dietro alla TAL ed alla GESeaCo. John Maccarone, presidente della Textainer Equipment Management, si aspetta che la flotta raggiunga il milione di TEU nel giro di uno-due anni. Conferma infatti: "Adesso, stiamo per sfidare i due leaders del mercato".

La Textainer sta inoltre continuando a crescere mediante acquisizioni di nuove costruzioni, avendo ricevuto in consegna più di 100.000 TEU nel 1998 (oltre alla flotta della PrimeSource). Essa è stata superata nelle acquisizioni dalla Triton Container International, che ha preso in consegna più di 120.000 TEU nel 1998. La Triton resta un caso unico tra i primi dieci noleggiatori in classifica, per il fatto che ha sempre fermamente evitato le espansioni per mezzo di fusioni, di modo che afferma di essere una flotta cresciuta organicamente, che comprende solamente box con il marchio "Triton".

I vantaggi commerciali derivanti dall'operare una flotta "incontaminata" sono sottolineati da Mark Bennett, vice presidente per l'Europa. "Ciò continua a distinguerci dai nostri concorrenti" ha dichiarato "poiché molti di loro trasportano una varietà di marchi diversi nell'ambito delle loro flotte acquisite mediante precedenti acquisizioni". La Triton attualmente è in quinta posizione nell'ambito di una classifica recentemente consolidata, dietro alla Interpool-CAI, e controlla più di 600.000 TEU.

Il 1998 è stato un'annata quasi da record per gli acquisti delle società di noleggio (v. Tabella 3), tanto che ha quasi raggiunto il record di tutti i tempi - pari a 750.000 TEU - di consegne di nuove costruzioni nel 1997. Altri grossi acquirenti di contenitori nuovi nel 1998 sono state la Interpool, la CAI e la Gateway, che tra tutte hanno ricevuto più di 220.000 TEU. Attiva sono state anche la Capital, la Florens e la Gold Container. I due leaders del settore (TAL e GESeaCo) hanno ricevuto nel 1998 un numero proporzionalmente minore di TEU, così come hanno fatto la Xtra e la Cronos. Queste ultime due ditte hanno ridotto gli investimenti, dal momento che il loro futuro resta incerto.

La TAL e la GESeaCo anche nel 1998 si sono impegnate in considerevoli investimenti, poiché hanno preso in consegna un numero proporzionalmente grande di unità speciali. Queste includono refrigerati, cisterne e (nel caso della GESeaCo) box cellulari pallet-wide. Si dice che la TAL nel 1998 abbia sborsato almeno 150 milioni di dollari per nuove attrezzature. La GESeaCo ha speso 75 milioni di dollari, tutti quanti investiti successivamente alla costituzione della società nel mese di maggio. Ci si aspetta che entrambe effettuino acquisizioni ancora maggiori nel 1999, con la GESeaCo già intenzionata a spendere 120 milioni di dollari. La TAL, oltre al suo programma di nuove costruzioni, ha recentemente acquistato 2.800 TEU di equipaggiamento cisterna usato dalla Stolt-Nielsen Leasing.

E' già stato appurato che il settore del noleggio di box acquisterà meno containers nel 1999 (rispetto al 1998 ed al 1997). Le ultime cifre pubblicate dalla IICL (Istituto dei Noleggiatori Internazionali di Contenitori) indicano che le principali (prime nove) società in classifica riceveranno solo 590.000 TEU quest'anno. Quasi la metà andranno a tre società, la Triton, la Textainer e la Gateway, che dovrebbero prenderne da 85.000 a 105.000 TEU ciascuno (v. Tabella 3).

La Gateway, ad esempio, dovrebbe comprare almeno 90.000 TEU, molti dei quali saranno consegnati nel corso della seconda metà dell'anno. Il presidente Raphael Che ha commentato che "vi sono ancora un sacco di opportunità di espansione e di conseguire quote nel contesto dell'attuale mercato". La produzione totale per il settore del noleggio di box potrebbe perciò arrivare a 650.000 TEU, sebbene questa cifra possa comprendere qualche transazione di noleggio-acquisto.

Per il 1999 potrebbe essere previsto un calo dei quantitativi acquistati dai noleggiatori, dati i considerevoli investimenti effettuati nel corso dei due anni precedenti. Tuttavia, questa previsione è stata influenzata anche dall'idea che i prezzi dei containers si siano finalmente assestati al livello più basso. I prezzi in Cina si sono ripresi di qualche percentuale nel secondo trimestre del 1999, facendo seguito ad una crescita selettiva del costo dei materiali. Essi potrebbero aumentare ulteriormente nel corso dei prossimi sei mesi, anche se hanno ancora molta strada da fare prima di riuscire a conseguire nuovamente i livelli del 1998.

Allo stesso tempo, la disponibilità di finanziamenti è ora meno sicura di quanto non lo fosse negli ultimi anni. Si dice che le fusioni recentemente avvenute nel settore bancario abbiano già ridotto i fondi a causa della diminuzione del numero delle fonti disponibili. Inoltre, molti prestatori che in precedenza assistevano il settore del noleggio di containers da quel momento si sono resi conto della diminuzione di ricavi rispetto alle offerte, nonché del fatto che non vi è ancora in vista alcuna reale ripresa.
