L'industria mondiale del leasing di contenitori: ripresa o falsa alba?

L'industria globale del leasing di contenitori ha attraversato un'altra brutta annata nel corso del 2001, allorquando il rallentamento della crescita dei traffici mondiali di box ha tagliato la domanda di equipaggiamento a noleggio e ha comportato una rilevante riconsegna di unità. Ciò, a sua volta, ha spinto verso il basso l'utilizzazione dei noleggiatori e molte imprese del settore hanno dovuto subire un calo più serio di quello sperimentato nel corso della precedente recessione del 1998-99. Com'era prevedibile, anche le tariffe di noleggio giornaliere hanno dovuto sottostare alla nuova pressione ed hanno sofferto una ulteriore erosione rispetto ai prezzi dei containers.

La situazione era ancora brutta all'inizio del 2002, sebbene tutti i noleggiatori avessero poi riferito di una significativa ripresa della domanda dal secondo trimestre in poi. I livelli di utilizzazione hanno iniziato a migliorare, aumentando di diversi punti percentuali per alcune società e le cifre relative all'intero settore sono di nuovo salite oltre l'80%; esse non erano mai più state a questo livello sin dalla fine del 2000. Anche le ditte di punta GESeaCo e Transamerica Leasing stanno nuovamente conseguendo tariffe della serie "fine anni '70". Si è poi verificata qualche ripresa provvisoria delle tariffe di leasing, almeno per quanto riguarda il nuovo equipaggiamento noleggiato a lungo termine, dato che i prezzi dei containers hanno ancora una volta cominciato a crescere. Tuttavia, la maggior parte delle società di noleggio sono ancora prudenti. Molte temono infatti che l'ultima ripresa possa rivelarsi transitoria come quella verificatasi nel 2000.

La situazione nel 2001 era stata resa peggiore anche dall'iniziale e (col senno di poi) mal riposto ottimismo del 2000, che aveva indotto noleggiatori e vettori marittimi ad investire notevolmente in nuove attrezzature containerizzate. Quell'annata detiene il record per la produzione di containers, con quasi 2 milioni di TEU costruiti complessivamente. Circa 850.000 TEU erano stati ordinati dalle ditte di leasing, il che ha rappresentato il loro maggiore approvvigionamento di sempre. Tuttavia, il mercato ha subito un declino molto rapido alla fine del 2000 ed il risultato è stato che un grosso quantitativo di scorte ha finito per incombere sul 2001. Questo sovrappiù di equipaggiamento è stato infine smaltito verso la fine del 2001, e ciò è stato agevolato dalla marcata riduzione degli acquisti di containers da parte dei noleggiatori nel corso di quell'annata.

Le società di leasing hanno acquisito appena 465.000 TEU nel corso del 2001, il che rappresenta il punto più basso da otto anni a questa parte. Anche i vettori marittimi (ed altri operatori di trasporto) hanno ordinato meno contenitori nel 2001, rispetto al 2000, ma questo non ha comportato un taglio produttivo dello stesso ammontare, e la ragione è molto semplice. I principali vettori marittimi nel corso del 2001 hanno ricevuto in consegna un considerevole quantitativo di navi ordinate, tanto è vero che sono arrivati quell'anno 600.000 TEU di spazi-containers in più. Sebbene il mercato non sia stato granché in grado di supportare un influsso così rilevante, queste nuove navi in consegna avevano ancora bisogno di containers per le loro operazioni. Molti vettori, a causa del rinnovato declino dei prezzi dei containers e dei tempi bui per la riduzione della produzione, hanno optato per l'acquisizione in proprio di questo fabbisogno di contenitori in più, continuando nel contempo a riconsegnare notevoli quantitativi di equipaggiamento noleggiato.

Gran parte di quest'ultimo era stato contrattato a breve termine nel contesto di accordi di master leasing nel 2000, quando la domanda si era rafforzata ed alcuni vettori si erano ritrovati a corto di forniture. Naturalmente, le linee di navigazione erano state svelte ad eliminare dalle proprie flotte tali unità ad alto costo, ma ciò non ha comportato alcun beneficio per il settore del leasing. La picchiata dell'utilizzazione sofferta da tutti i noleggiatori nel 2001 ha indotto conseguenze sulle loro flotte più vecchie a breve termine, in particolar modo per quanto riguarda il settore dei carichi secchi. La maggior parte dei soggetti più importanti ha assistito ad un calo dal 10 al 15 per cento delle proprie percentuali complessive noleggiate nei 12 mesi che vanno sino alla fine del 2001, con alcune ditte che hanno riferito di livelli di utilizzazione di quasi il 70%. Si riconosce che ciò sia prossimo al punto di rottura anche per le società di noleggio meglio attrezzate.

Nel corso del 2001 e nei primi mesi del 2002, oltre 1,6 milioni di TEU sono stati messi fuori noleggio dalle flotte operative dei noleggiatori. Le varie ditte hanno affrontato questa crisi in modi diversi. Nessun noleggiatore può permettersi di ignorare un quantitativo sempre più grande di contenitori fermi, dato che i loro costi "morti" di deposito e movimentazione finiscono per mangiarsi rapidamente i profitti. Per ironia della sorte, peraltro, i maggiori oneri di deposito si sono verificati sempre di più nelle zone di maggiore domanda, quali Hong Kong, la Corea del Sud e molte località costiere della Cina.

Questi stessi costi sono in genere più bassi in Nordamerica ed in certe zone d'Europa, dove il mercato dei containers di seconda mano è anche meglio sviluppato. Così, i noleggiatori devono fare una scelta: riposizionare i propri contenitori fermi in zone più costose ma anche di maggiore domanda come l'Asia, oppure lasciarli in località meno costose, tipo "cimitero degli elefanti", anche se la migliore opzione parrebbe essere quella di vendere del tutto l'unità estromettendola dalla flotta.

La scelta di riposizionare in zone a domanda elevata è stata effettuata da tutte le principali società del settore, tra cui Textainer Group, TAL e GESeaCo. Quest'ultima al momento sta movimentando oltre 10.000 delle proprie unità vuote per mezzo di navi a noleggio, al fine di attenuare il crescente deficit di equipaggiamento in Asia. Anche la Textainer ha espletato tali nuove dislocazioni per mezzo di navi a noleggio, che sono costate molti milioni di dollari. Spiega il presidente della Textainer, John Maccarone: "Volevamo avere i containers nel posto giusto, nel momento in cui finalmente avvenisse la ripresa". Questa strategia sembra avere prodotto dividendi, dato che l'utilizzazione complessiva della flotta della Textainer è migliorata rapidamente negli ultimi mesi ed ora si è attestata ben oltre l'80%".

L'alternativa al riposizionamento è quella della dismissione di attrezzature in soprannumero; in effetti, anche la rivendita dei contenitori più vecchi è aumentata lo scorso anno. La Textainer anche in questo caso è in prima linea e si è impegnata in un'aggressiva opera di liquidazione dell'equipaggiamento più obsoleto, tra cui gran parte di quello acquisito per effetto del rilevamento della Xtra International e della PrimeSource.

Essa ha già costituito una divisione vendite di seconda mano allo scopo di movimentare la propria crescente rivendita di vecchi contenitori, anche per conto di terzi (vettori marittimi). Infatti, è improbabile che la società consegua alcuna crescita netta della flotta nel corso del 2002, mentre ci si aspetta che le dismissioni almeno rispecchino le consegne di unità di nuova costruzione. L'attuale flotta della Textainer è attestata a circa 950.000 TEU, sebbene per la verità essa abbia raggiunto i 970.000 TEU alla fine del 2001.

Tuttavia, è probabile che la prevista dismissione di circa 70.000 TEU ad opera della Textainer nel corso del 2002 finisca per riguardare numeri più contenuti di pari passo con la rivendita combinata già portata a termine dalla TAL e dalla GESeaCo. Quasi 300.000 TEU sono stati eliminati dall'intera flotta operativa dei noleggiatori nel corso del 2001, e le due ditte citate hanno rappresentato più della metà del totale. Allo stesso tempo, i due leaders del mercato hanno convertito molti vecchi containers in noleggio finanziario, rimovendoli concretamente dalle proprie flotte operative. Tali containers sono destinati a passare in proprietà del vettore, una volta concluso il noleggio a termine. La maggior parte era costituita da unità del tipo per carichi secchi, di età pari ad almeno sette-otto anni e provenienti da leasing operativo a lungo termine.

Esistono grossi incentivi a fare così, dal momento che ciò riduce l'esposizione dei noleggiatori nei confronti del leasing a breve termine o master, sospinge l'utilizzazione e riduce le spese di deposito. Inoltre, tutto ciò viene conseguito senza "sovraccaricare" il mercato di seconda mano e rischiare il collasso dei prezzi dei box usati. L'unico punto sfavorevole sta nel fatto che la società di leasing perde il diritto di reclamare il valore residuo del container in un momento successivo, sebbene l'unità poi ingeneri qualche altro provento mentre resta in noleggio.

Si sa che la GESeaCo ha trasferito oltre 100.000 TEU della propria flotta di carichi secchi in leasing finanziario nel corso degli ultimi 18 mesi, mentre la TAL ha convertito un numero ancora maggiore di unità. Di conseguenza, le vere flotte operative di entrambe le società hanno subito una riduzione delle dimensioni e sono attualmente prossime a quelle dichiarate dalla Textainer. La TAL, ad esempio, dichiara una flotta di circa 1,1 milioni di TEU per la propria divisione operativa, ma qualcosa di più del 15% di essi per certi versi sono stati convertiti in leasing finanziario. Se le "conversioni" effettuate in relazione alla flotta della GESeaCo venissero allo stesso modo trasferite sul suo totale operativo, le cifre inerenti alla sua flotta crescerebbero a più di 1,05 milioni di TEU.

La maggior parte dell'equipaggiamento trasferito dalla GESeaCo apparteneva in origine alla flotta della Genstar ed è stata collocata nell'ambito della distinta divisione finanziamento contenitori della GE Capital. Quest'ultima ha recentemente posto fine a nuove attività, pur continuando ad effettuare servizi per i clienti già esistenti. Anche la TAL dispone della propria branca di finanziamento containers, che opera separatamente rispetto alla divisione noleggio contenitori della società, nonché di una divisione rivendita box, la Trader, che si occupa della ricommercializzazione della propria flotta e per conto terzi. Sia la TAL che la GESeaCo indicano che le proprie strategie di "conversione" risultano paganti. La Sea Containers, che possiede il 35% circa delle attrezzature containerizzate attualmente gestite dalla GESeaCo, ha già visto un miglioramento dei propri guadagni, rispetto ad un calo del giro d'affari. Complessivamente, le operazioni di noleggio containers della società hanno ingenerato un calo di proventi pari al 15% nel 2001, rispetto a quelli del 2000, sebbene i propri introiti (al lordo dei costi finanziari) siano cresciuti del 30%.

Le suddette iniziative potrebbero essere la risultanza di una qual certa arrendevolezza, ma sono state anche la causa della stagnazione della crescita complessiva delle dimensioni delle flotte dei noleggiatori nel suo insieme. Il numero di TEU in noleggio operativo è cambiato in modo irrilevante nel corso degli ultimi 18 mesi, il che rappresenta il primo caso nella storia di 35 anni del settore e gli ha procurato una perdita di alcune quote in termini di proprietà. Anche tenendo conto di acquisizioni leggermente maggiori sino a questo momento del 2002, la flotta noleggiata resta appena al di sotto dei 7 milioni di TEU e non si prevede un incremento molto oltre tale cifra per la fine del corrente anno.

Tale flotta era attestata a quasi 6,9 milioni di TEU alla fine del 2001 ed era appena poche migliaia di TEU più consistente (anche se sempre al di sotto dei 6,9 milioni di TEU) l'anno precedente, alla fine del 2000. In breve, il recente aumento delle dismissioni dei box con trasferimento in proprietà ai vettori ha superato con un margine notevole le consegne ai noleggiatori di nuove costruzioni. Ciò ha ridotto la quota dei TEU appartenenti ai noleggiatori di diversi punti percentuali, dal culmine del 47,5% riscontrato nel 1999 ad appena oltre il 43% di oggi. I vettori marittimi (ed altri operatori di trasporto) perciò possiedono quasi il 57% di tutto l'equipaggiamento containerizzato, che rappresenta il loro risultato percentuale maggiore da molti anni a questa parte. Questi possessori ora controllano una flotta prossima ai 9 milioni di TEU, avendola incrementata rispetto agli 8 milioni di TEU alla fine del 2000.

La situazione dei noleggiatori è stata peggiorata altresì dal già menzionato calo degli investimenti in nuove costruzioni, dato che ciò fornisce un'altra soluzione ai noleggiatori che cercano di ridimensionare la propria esposizione nei confronti del mercato. Quasi tutte le società nel 2001 hanno ridotto gli ordinativi inerenti a contenitori e molti non hanno in programma una ripresa degli acquisti quest'anno, malgrado il rilancio del mercato. Tuttavia, qualsiasi taglio a lungo termine degli investimenti può comportare seri problemi strutturali, dato che i noleggiatori con flotte vecchie od obsolete vengono invariabilmente svantaggiati.

Alcuni noleggiatori sono alquanto evasivi nel rivelare in dettaglio i loro piani per il 2002, ma i loro acquisti nel complesso dovrebbero essere maggiori rispetto a quelli dell'ultimo anno. Infatti, l'incentivo a riprendere gli investimenti saranno prevalenti per molte imprese. L'attuale mercato, sebbene sia simile a quello dei primi mesi del 2000, è relativamente in rialzo e ci sono di nuovo tutti i necessari presupposti per incoraggiare i vettori marittimi a noleggiare in grande quantità.

I prezzi dei contenitori nuovi stanno di nuovo aumentando rapidamente, dopo essere calati sino ad un altro punto minimo all'inizio del 2002. Essi sono andati su di almeno il 15% nei due mesi che hanno preceduto giugno ed in vista vi sono ancora altri incrementi, dato che i produttori devono adeguarsi ad ulteriori aumenti del costo dell'acciaio, delle pavimentazioni in legno e delle altre materie prime. Aumenti simili nelle tariffe giornaliere si stanno verificando in ordine ai nuovi contenitori noleggiati a lungo termine. Anche le fabbriche di containers riferiscono di un crescente arretrato di ordinazioni, aggravato dalla carenza di materiali e dal fatto che molti impianti ancora lavorano su un solo turno.

Allo stesso tempo, la domanda si è intensificata proprio quando la disponibilità dei quantitativi di containers è calata al minimo presso località-chiave della Cina ed altrove in Asia. Ciò ha naturalmente contribuito al miglioramento del mercato del noleggio a breve termine. Queste crescenti carenze sono ulteriormente alimentate dalla minaccia di sciopero a luglio dei portuali della Costa Occidentale statunitense, che ha spinto i dettaglianti del Nord America ad anticipare le importazioni di merci dall'Asia per le festività natalizie prima del terzo trimestre.

Allorquando i vettori marittimi hanno dovuto affrontare in precedenza una combinazione di domanda rafforzata, prezzi dei containers in salita, allungamento dei tempi di consegna e carenza dei quantitativi immediatamente disponibili, la loro reazione è stata tendenzialmente quella di rivolgersi al noleggio in maggiori quantitativi. Il mercato attuale non si sta mostrando diverso. Un certo numero di grossi vettori, tra cui la Evergreen Line e la Hanjin Shipping, hanno già scelto di prendere a noleggio a lungo termine un consistente numero di nuovi contenitori piuttosto che di finanziarli del tutto, e da ciò ha tratto vantaggio un'ampia fascia di noleggiatori, tra cui la Textainer, la Triton Container, la Florens, la Interpool, la CAI, la GESeaCo, la TAL e la Capital Lease. Tali noleggiatori hanno complessivamente piazzato ordinazioni per almeno 300.000 TEU nel corso del secondo trimestre, con consegna nel 2002.

Si prevede attualmente che il settore del leasing stia per ricevere complessivamente 550.000 TEU quest'anno. Ciò costituirebbe un incremento del 20% circa rispetto ai suoi acquisti molto ridotti del 2001, ma si parte dal presupposto che vengano esercitate gran parte delle opzioni in ordine alla produzione straordinaria in programma per il quarto trimestre. Tutto il nuovo equipaggiamento sarà certamente piazzato in leasing a lungo termine ed a tariffe sempre migliori rispetto quelle ottenute nel momento di minima nel 2001. C'è una speranza sempre maggiore che anche le tariffe a breve termine e di leasing master possano finalmente rafforzarsi nuovamente.

Inoltre, malgrado le recenti scarse prestazioni del mercato e le prospettive di prezzi più elevati per i box, il finanziamento a basso costo è ancora disponibile per la maggioranza dei noleggiatori. Ci si aspetta che anche l'ammontare di equipaggiamento ricollocato nella flotta dei noleggiatori sia consistente nel 2002, mentre ci sarà qualche ulteriore (ma più limitata) conversione di containers in leasing finanziario. Ci si aspetta che le ditte di leasing vendano altri 300.000 TEU sul mercato di seconda mano nel corso del 2002 e che possano arrivare a trasferire sino a 100.000 TEU in leasing finanziario. Appena 160.000 TEU andranno ad aggiungersi alle dimensioni della flotta esistente. Com'è accaduto negli ultimi anni, la maggior parte dei nuovi acquisti concernerà unità standard high-cube da 40 piedi, mentre i containers per carichi secchi da 20 e 40 piedi (8 piedi e 6 pollici) verranno acquistati in numero minore per il rimpiazzo. Ci si aspetta che relativamente pochi investimenti vengano effettuati in unità speciali, fatta eccezione per i refrigerati high-cube da 40 piedi.

Malgrado le voci circa la recente propensione a favore del noleggio, i vettori marittimi effettueranno altresì notevoli investimenti in attrezzature per le loro flotte di proprietà nel 2002 e sono quindi certi di riceverne in misura maggiore rispetto al 2001. E' probabile che le dismissioni dalla flotta di box appartenenti ai vettori saranno modeste. L'attuale linea di tendenza indica una consegna di almeno 875.000 TEU alle linee di navigazione e ad altri operatori di trasporto, tra cui oltre 250.000 TEU destinati alle sostituzioni. I vettori marittimi richiederanno un quantitativo notevole di containers in più sia per far fronte alla crescita dei traffici prevista in aumento per il 2002, sia perché essi stanno continuando ad ordinare un gran numero di nuove portacontainers.

Può anche darsi che il settore del noleggio stia acquistando/aggiungendo molti containers in meno rispetto ai vettori marittimi, ma alcuni noleggiatori sono al momento più attivi degli altri. E' probabile che uno dei principali acquirenti nel 2002 sia la Capital Lease, che è riuscita ad ottenere dai suoi finanziatori all'inizio di quest'anno la somma record di 120 milioni di dollari e da allora ha effettuato ordinazioni per 72.000 TEU (oltre ad opzioni per altri 13.000 TEU). Le attuali dimensioni della flotta della Capital sono di circa 260.000 TEU e sono pronte ad oltrepassare i 300.000 TEU entro la fine dell'anno.

Il presidente della Capital, Ian Karan, ha dichiarato che la consegna dell'equipaggiamento sinora "è andata a rilento", dal momento che molte fabbriche non si sono adeguate alla produzione, lavorando a tempo parziale o avendo chiuso alla fine del 2001. Egli ha altresì commentato che la carenza di materie prime ha ostacolato la produzione, mentre alcuni fornitori hanno cercato di rinegoziare i prezzi rispetto al livello originario concordato a gennaio.

Karan è uno dei massimi dirigenti del settore che hanno espresso una qual certa cautela circa il fragile stato del mercato del noleggio, alludendo al fatto che "l'attuale ripresa potrebbe molto rapidamente esaurirsi di nuovo, persino prima del quarto trimestre". La sua decisione di investire pesantemente nel 2002 è stata presa per lo più al fine di incrementare la quota di mercato e di migliorare le economie operative, traendo nel contempo vantaggio dai costi molto bassi dell'equipaggiamento offerti nella prima parte dell'anno.

Altri vettori sono stati indotti ad agire grosso modo dalle medesime strategie. La CAI ha confermato il probabile acquisto di oltre 50.000 TEU per il 2002, portando la propria flotta a circa 480.000 TEU. La Florens, che fa parte del Cosco Pacific Group, dovrebbe incamerare 60.000 TEU, il che farà crescere la sua intera flotta sino a 650.000 TEU. Tra questi saranno compresi circa 280.000 TEU in leasing operativo a terze linee di navigazione "internazionali", oltre 340.000 TEU noleggiati alla ditta-madre Cosco Containerlines e 30.000 TEU in leasing finanziario a terzi. La TAL sta effettuando investimenti in misura molto più rilevante rispetto agli ultimi anni, con un numero di TEU compreso tra 40.000 e 60.000 che dovrebbe essere acquistato quest'anno. Il presidente della divisione containers della TAL, Brian Sondey, che è appena stato nominato presidente dell'organismo commerciale dei noleggiatori di box, l'Istituto dei Noleggiatori Internazionali di Containers, ha recentemente confermato che le prospettive non erano così buone da qualche tempo.

Ci si aspetta che anche la GESeaCo sia di gran lunga più attiva nel 2002, tanto che ha già confermato ordinazioni per unità per carichi secchi per oltre 40.000 TEU. Essa acquisterà poi altri refrigerati in più e qualche altro speciale. La Textainer ha già ordinato oltre 36.000 TEU sino al terzo trimestre e dispone di ulteriori opzioni per 28.000 TEU da concretizzarsi entro la fine dell'anno (a seconda della solidità del mercato). Pure la Triton probabilmente acquisirà almeno 60.000 TEU, gran parte dei quali in arrivo alla fine dell'anno. Questa ditta detiene ancora il record di maggior singolo acquirente di containers nel 1999 e nel 2000, ma è rimasta relativamente tranquilla nel 2001. Le dimensioni della sua flotta adesso sono simili a quelle della Textainer (ed alle flotte operative della TAL e della GESeaCo).

Tra le partecipanti meno attive si possono annoverare la Gateway Container International e la Cronos Group, nessuna delle quali ha investito molto dal 2000. L'ultima di loro, malgrado nel 2001 abbia ottenuto un cospicuo credito a termine, non intende acquistare granché per la sua flotta operativa. Quest'ultima al momento è stagnante attorno ai 370.000 TEU. La Gateway ha avuto la sua dose di problemi negli ultimi mesi, dopo essere stata afflitta dalla disastrosa recessione della domanda di noleggio a breve termine nel corso del 2001.

La società ha quindi dovuto far fronte alla crescita dei debiti ed i suoi finanziatori, tra cui la CDC Capital Partners, all'inizio del 2002 si sono offerti di rilevarla. Essa successivamente è entrata in trattative con la Gold Container, principale noleggiatore di box francese (nonché appartenente al gruppo Touax), sebbene in questo caso non sia stato concluso alcun accordo. Adesso, con la prospettiva di un mercato a breve termine in miglioramento, la Gateway sta riprovando a "far da sola" e sta ancora una volta cercando di ottenere nuovi finanziamenti.
