Momento positivo per i porti scandinavi

La Norvegia e la Svezia sono sempre state assai dipendenti dai traffici ro-ro, il che non sorprende, data la natura della loro localizzazione. Circa l'80% della popolazione norvegese vive a meno di 10 km dalla costa, con il risultato che il 95% dei suoi traffici con l'estero ed il 45% della rete di trasporto nazionale hanno a che fare con il mare. Mentre l'umore tra i maggiori porti norvegesi è per lo più al rialzo, alcuni dei principali porti svedesi hanno dovuto modificare la natura delle proprie attività in seguito all'apertura del collegamento fisso Øresund. Malgrado ciò, l'area nordica continua ad essere assai competitiva con la costante aggiunta di nuovi servizi.

Göteborg, il maggior porto scandinavo, movimenta circa il 70% di tutti i containers marittimi della Svezia ed è l'unico con pescaggio sufficiente ed infrastrutture adatte alla movimentazione delle grandi portacontainers della Maersk, ad esempio. I risultati in termini di box hanno fatto registrare un aumento del 3% sino a 666.000 TEU lo scorso anno, mentre i risultati complessivi delle merci sono stati stagnanti, attestandosi a 33,3 milioni di tonnellate. I volumi di automobili nuove sono aumentati del 25% sino a far registrare 331.400 unità.

Sono in corso piani di espansione, dato che il terminal contenitori a Skandia Harbour presto risulterà assolutamente insufficiente. L'intenzione nel giro dei prossimi 10 anni è quella di raddoppiare la capacità modificando l'impostazione e le attrezzature del terminal. Un progetto da 390 milioni di corone svedesi (50,8 milioni di dollari USA) finalizzato ad incrementare il pescaggio da 12 a 14,2 metri, nonché ad effettuare altri lavori di ricostruzione, dovrebbe essere completato entro la fine del 2005.

Malgrado la perdita della Misc/OOCL lo scorso anno, il porto ha acquisito altri clienti, ad esempio la MSC, la X-Press Container Line e la Hamburg Süd/Ellerman. Per settembre, la DFDS Tor Line ha in programma un nuovo collegamento ro-ro da Göteborg a Danzica denominato PolBridge, sulla scorta di un nuovo servizio ro-ro inaugurato il 1' maggio, il MaasBridge, da Harwich a Rotterdam. La DFDS ha altresì siglato un accordo con la Volvo Logistics al fine di ampliare la propria collaborazione da Göteborg a Gand ed Immingham per la fine del 2005. Per il proprio servizio di Immingham, essa ha recentemente commissionato due supernavi con 4.000 metri di corsie, mentre ne riceverà in consegna una terza a maggio.

Evidenziando ancor più la concorrenza su questa rotta, anche la Cobelfret ha lanciato un servizio ro-ro quattro volte alla settimana da Göteborg ad Immingham a gennaio. Nei traffici con la Germania, la Stena Line sta migliorando i propri servizi ro-ro tutto-merci, avendo introdotto una nuova nave sulla tratta Göteborg-Travemünde alla fine di marzo. La capacità su questa rotta sarà presto accresciuta del 40%, allorquando vi verrà aggregata una nave gemella.

Malgrado l'insistenza sui servizi ro-ro, tuttavia, l'ammontare dei carichi trasportati da e per l'hinterland di Göteborg per ferrovia è in aumento. Le casse mobili, i contenitori ed i semirimorchi del porto sono aumentati di oltre il 20% dal 2002 al 2003 e, secondo i dati preliminari, hanno infranto la barriera delle 100.000 unità per la prima volta. In termini di TEU, la ferrovia rappresenta il 26% di tutti i box del porto, rispetto al 18% di cinque anni fa.

Stoccolma, che movimenta solo servizi di raccordo, ha dovuto subire un arretramento lo scorso anno con la perdita della MSC e della ESCO. I volumi containerizzati sono calati da 36.392 TEU nel 2002 ai 33.554 TEU, ma il porto spera di raggiungere i 34.500 TEU quest'anno. La capacità è ovviamente sottoutilizzata, dal momento che il terminal ha un potenziale di movimentazione di almeno 70.000 TEU. Il traffico ro-ro è consistito in 5,5 milioni di tonnellate, e ci si aspetta che aumenti sino a 6 milioni quest'anno ed a 6,5 milioni nel 2005. Complessivamente 307.000 camion e semirimorchi sono stati movimentati lo scorso anno. Per il 2007, il porto spera di dare il via alla costruzione di un terminal multipurpose da 57 milioni di corone svedesi (7,4 milioni di dollari USA) su un sito di 500.000 metri quadrati a nord delle attuali infrastrutture.

Il CMP (Copenhagen Malmö Port), costituito nel 2001 in vista della concorrenza apportata dal Ponte di Øresund, si concentra sullo sviluppo dei servizi di distribuzione al fine di incrementare la propria attrattiva, e la strategia sta ovviamente dando i suoi frutti. Secondo Soren Balken, coordinatore del marketing, il porto è particolarmente fiero dei propri traffici di auto nuove, che lo scorso anno sono aumentati a razzo del 250% sino a 140.000 unità. Ciò è stato dovuto all'apertura di un nuovo terminal della Toyota a Malmö, che ha prodotto risultati per l'intero mercato nordico. Le auto vengono consegnate in Svezia e Danimarca su strada ed in Finlandia, nelle ex Repubbliche sovietiche ed in Russia per ferrovia, con tre convogli completi che partono dal porto ogni giorno, afferma Balken.

I semirimorchi ed i camion che transitano attraverso il CMP sono arrivati sino a 200.000 unità, quindi in aumento rispetto alle 195.000 unità del 2002, sebbene siano ancora inferiori rispetto alle 205.000 unità del 2001. I risultati dei containers sono saliti del 4% sino a 135.000 TEU, circa 27.000 dei quali erano dovuti a Malmö. I volumi complessivi sono aumentati del 10% sino a 14,8 milioni di tonnellate. Il CMP intende investire più di 500 milioni di corone svedesi (65 milioni di dollari USA) in infrastrutture ed equipaggiamenti, compreso un quarto terminal per auto. Sono in corso piani per un nuovo terminal logistico a Nordhammen a Malmö, che ci si aspetta che sostituisca gli attuali terminals per contenitori e traghetti entro il 2010 circa.

La Nordö-Link a gennaio ha iniziato le operazioni con una quarta nave dotata di 1.600 metri di corsie sulla propria rotta principale Lubecca-Travemünde-Malmö ed afferma di avere il 44% del mercato del trasporto merci dalla Svezia a Travemünde.

Helsingborg, il rivale più prossimo del CMP, ha dovuto subire un calo del 25% dei volumi stradali e ferroviari dal momento dell'apertura del Ponte di Øresund. Esso è ora uno dei porti più moderni della Scandinavia e, come il CMP, si sta anche concentrando sui servizi a valore aggiunto. I suoi risultati containerizzati stanno aumentando e sembrano in procinto di compiere un altro balzo alla luce della decisione della MSC di fare scalo in questo porto a marzo nell'ambito di una nuova rotta che collega Gdynia ad Anversa. Il porto si aspetta altri 5.000 TEU all'anno da questa attività, avendo movimentato circa 88.000 TEU lo scorso anno (calcolo ricavato sulla base di dati relativi ai primi nove mesi). Inoltre, la RailCombi sta progettando la costruzione di un terminal intermodale per un costo di 50 milioni di corone svedesi (6,5 milioni di dollari USA) che dovrebbe iniziare l'anno prossimo.

Infine, Trelleborg, il porto tradizionale dei traffici ferro-stradali per la Germania, ha movimentato lo scorso anno 10,7 milioni di tonnellate di merce, con un aumento del 3,1% rispetto al 2002. Il traffico camionistico ne ha rappresentato circa i tre/quarti. Il traffico intermodale ferro-strada è aumentato dell'11,5% sino a 51.000 unità di trasporto intermodale. Il porto sta pianificando di ampliare le proprie infrastrutture sulla base di un progetto denominato Vision 2005, il quale prevede due nuovi ormeggi per traghetti ferroviari, un nuovo sistema di rampe, il miglioramento del piazzale di smistamento ed un nuovo terminal intermodale che raddoppierà la sua capacità di movimentazione.

Il porto di Oslo rappresenta il principale porto containerizzato della Norvegia con risultati pari a 145.770 TEU nel 2002 (i dati del 2003 non erano disponibili a maggio, ma esso potrebbe aver raggiunto i 200.000 TEU sulla base delle cifre del secondo trimestre). La maggior parte dei contenitori vengono trasportati nel e fuori dal porto per mezzo di navi di raccordo o camion. I volumi stanno aumentando costantemente, secondo Margrethe Austrad, dirigente delle pubbliche relazioni. Il porto sta attualmente realizzando un secondo terminal contenitori ai sensi di un piano di sviluppo che va dal 2002 al 2011. Parte della nuova infrastruttura è già stata completata. L'idea è quella di spostare infine le attuali operazioni dalla sua localizzazione al centro della città al nuovo sito.

Bergen, che è importante quale base di forniture per le piattaforme di trivellazione subacquea di petrolio nel Mare del Nord, ha movimentato 79,8 milioni di tonnellate di merci nel 2003, in calo rispetto ai 93,9 milioni di tonnellate nel 2002. Circa il 96% di tale merce è costituita da petrolio. Il calo è stato dovuto, per lo più, alle minori esportazioni da parte della Statoil. D'altro canto, i risultati containerizzati sono aumentati dalle 12.979 unità del 2002 ad un sorprendente numero di 97.593 unità, semplicemente perché il porto ha deciso per la prima volta di comprendere tra i risultati i dati dei terminals gestiti privatamente, come spiega Stein Hauge, coordinatore del settore informatico. Tuttavia, in questo caso è necessaria un po' di prudenza: i containers non sono unità da 20 piedi, ma per lo più unità da 7 piedi e 6 pollici sviluppate specialmente per l'industria delle forniture. Non sono molte le merci che vanno per ferrovia, dichiara Hauge, ma vi sono binari nella maggior parte delle banchine. Un nuovo terminal merci dovrebbe essere completato entro quest'anno.

Stavanger è nota come la capitale del petrolio della Norvegia. La maggior parte dei contenitori è movimentata da una società privata, la NorSea Group, un importante fornitore delle industrie costiere e non. Bjorn Inge Lie, della NorSea, dichiara che la sua stima dei risultati containerizzati dello scorso anno si attesta sul 10-15% in più rispetto ai circa 27.000 TEU complessivi del 2002. L'autorità portuale sta lavorando assieme alla NorSea allo scopo di costituire un ulteriore terminal nella stessa zona di quello attuale e ha già costituito una società denominata Risavika per gestirlo. Oltre il 60% dei containers arrivano in porto o ne partono in camion, mentre la maggior parte del resto viaggia su navi di raccordo.

Kristiansand ha movimentato circa 40.000 TEU nel 2003, mentre i risultati complessivi in termini di merci sono arrivati ad 1,8 milioni di tonnellate. Ci si aspetta che quest'anno tali volumi aumentino, secondo Nils Otto Eriksen della Promozione del Porto di Kristiansand, il quale afferma che il porto è desideroso di rafforzare la propria funzione di hub. Esistono piani per modificare l'attuale terminal contenitori e dirottarlo in parte, mentre sarà aggiunto un altro ormeggio ro-ro. Nel contempo, il porto è nella fase iniziale di un nuovo progetto per movimentare i contenitori da Oslo a Bergen attraverso Kristiansand e poi mediante un traghetto della Color Line in Danimarca ed attraverso quest'ultima alla volta di Duisburg in Germania per la distribuzione, afferma Eriksen.

I traffici dalla Norvegia al continente sono assai contesi, con la Color Line, la DFDS Tor Line e la Stena Line fondamentalmente in concorrenza per la stessa attività. La rotta principale della Color Line è quella da Oslo a Kiel, dove l'autotrasporto è in calo. Essa dichiara che ciò è dovuto in parte alla nuova localizzazione delle linee produttive dalla Norvegia all'Europa centro-orientale, ed in parte al risultato dell'ingresso in Norvegia di operatori dell'autotrasporto a basso costo via strada dalla Svezia. Ciò, peraltro, non le ha impedito di ordinare un supertraghetto da 302,5 milioni di euro (359,5 milioni di dollari USA) con 1.270 metri di corsie, che entrerà in servizio a dicembre.

Malgrado il predominio dei traffici di traghetti e costieri, un certo quantitativo di concorrenza a livello di trasporto terrestre è fornito dalla CargoNet, la ferrovia merci norvegese. La società ha recentemente mutato la propria strategia ed accetta solo containers, casse mobili e semirimorchi dal dicembre 2003. La sola eccezione è costituita dai treni-blocco, ad esempio il treno dei carburanti alla volta dell'aeroporto di Oslo ovvero i treni-blocco di legname per l'industria della carta. Essa riferisce che il proprio traffico intermodale ha molto successo ed afferma di avere il 40% del mercato sull'asse Bodo-Trondheim-Oslo, malgrado la concorrenza dell'autotrasporto e del cabotaggio costiero. La CargoNet effettua treni espressi intermodali da Oslo a Göteborg, Trelleborg (e continente), Stoccolma (e Baltico) ed anche treni espressi containerizzati da Oslo a Bergen tre volte al giorno. La sua linea più importante è la quotidiana Arctic Rail Express, di 1.970 km, che collega Narvik ed Oslo via Svezia. La CargoNet proclama che il suo treno intermodale raggiunge una velocità media di 72 km/h, che è eccellente secondo gli standard internazionali.

L'operatore intermodale svedese RailCombi dal 2002 è una consociata della CombiNet. Le due società hanno costituito una rete combinata di vendite e marketing a gennaio, offrendo tariffe e condizioni identiche in entrambi i paesi. Uno dei servizi di maggiore successo della RailCombi è un convoglio quotidiano per contenitori, l'Atlantic Express, che viaggia da Göteborg a Stoccolma. Nel contempo, la società di trasporto merci ferroviario a controllo statale Green Cargo, che afferma di trasportare l'80% di tutte le merci in Svezia, sta costruendo un nuovo terminal intermodale a Hallsberg, tra Karlstad e Stoccolma, in collaborazione con la RailCombi.
