La ICF sul binario giusto

In un epoca in cui, in molte aree del settore trasportistico, la quota di mercato è ancora regina, l'operatore di rete pan-europea con sede a Basilea ICF (Intercontainer-Interfrigo) adotta un punto di vista diverso.

Come afferma il dott. Bernd Menzinger, presidente del consiglio di amministrazione dell'ICF, "il conseguimento di profitti è più importante dei volumi. Stiamo cercando di crescere in mercati strategici; non è sensato lottare per quote di mercato nell'ambito di mercati che non rendono profitti".

Nel corso del 1997, la ICF in realtà ha trasportato meno TEU rispetto al 1996 nel contesto dei propri servizi effettuati autonomamente. Nel trasporto combinato, i risultati si sono ridotti da 1.331.005 TEU ad 1.286.286 TEU, con un calo del 3,4% circa. Nello stesso tempo, per contro, i risultati della società in termini di TEU/km movimentati sono aumentati del 3% da 1,398 milioni ad 1, 440 milioni, che equivalgono ad una distanza media per carico trasportato pari a 1.190 km per TEU. Tuttavia, tenendo conto dei carichi trasportati da ICF nell'ambito di associazioni commerciali, i volumi movimentati nel 1997 sono stati pari a 2.003.395 TEU, con un incremento del 7,8% rispetto agli 1.858.059 TEU movimentati nel 1996.

Il calo rispetto al traffico trasportato con servizi propri costituisce il risultato della perdita di carichi a corto raggio con origine da Anversa. In primo luogo, i traffici per conto della Sea-Land sulla tratta Anversa-Rotterdam, per quasi 50.000 TEU/anno complessivi, sono stati persi a favore della NDX Intermodal. In secondo luogo, circa 8.000 TEU dell'attività relativa alla Chrysler movimentata da Anversa all'Austria è stata perduta a vantaggio della Transfracht. Ed infine anche volumi più piccoli movimentati sulla tratta Anversa-Austria sono stati catturati sia dalla NDX che dalla Transfracht.

La perdita di questi traffici a corto raggio è in linea con la strategia della ICF di concentrarsi maggiormente sulla movimentazioni a raggio più lungo. Due zone particolari dove è stato conseguito un buon successo sono il mercato italiano, laddove i trasporti sono aumentati anno per anno del 32% circa, e la C.S.I. Nel 1997, i trasporti da e per la C.S.I. hanno totalizzato 51.356 TEU, con un incremento del 16,6% rispetto ai livelli del 1996.

Søren Rasmussen, presidente del comitato esecutivo e direttore generale dell'ICF, è assai ottimista circa gli sviluppi delle attività societarie nella C.S.I. e dichiara: "Siamo fieri di aver potuto stabilire un punto d'appoggio in questi mercati; essi richiedono conoscenze specifiche, di cui noi disponiamo".

Anche nel settore del trasporto refrigerato (Interfrigo) sono stati trasportati meno carichi con servizi propri, dal momento che il numero delle unità trasportate nel 1997 - rispetto a quelle del 1996 - si è ridotto da 46.527 a 43.747, mentre il tonnellaggio è diminuito da 877.100 tonnellate a 847.900 tonnellate.

Rasmussen ha espresso qualche inquietudine in ordine alle prospettive per il 1998 del prodotto societario Interfrigo, citando due principali fattori di preoccupazione.

In primo luogo, il volume delle banane trasportate si sta riducendo in conseguenza delle influenze del mercato inerenti alla revisione delle quote dell'Unione Europea. In secondo luogo, gli effetti di El Niño in Sudamerica si sono visti sia nella qualità che nella quantità di banane arrivate in Europa settentrionale da quelle zone. Dal momento che il 55,1% dei carichi della Interfrigo attualmente è costituito da banane, è chiaro che la società ha qualche ragione di preoccupazione.

In secondo luogo, il mercato relativo al trasporto di prodotti a temperatura controllata nella C.S.I. è virtualmente collassato, in particolar modo in Russia. Prodotti quali il burro, la margarina e la carne ora scarseggiano alquanto nei negozi di quella zona.

Nel contempo, prospettive maggiormente favorevoli per lo sviluppo di questo settore dell'attività sono state riscontrate nel trasporto di prodotti cosmetici in unità a temperatura controllata, il che costituisce un nuovo sviluppo. Un altro recente sviluppo è rappresentato dalle richieste di trasporto di birra con le stesse modalità nel corso dei mesi estivi. Altre nicchie di mercato, poi, stanno venendo alla ribalta.

Dal punto di vista finanziario, il 1997 si è rivelato una delusione per la ICF, sebbene a causa di ragioni fuori dal suo controllo. Il fatturato del 1997 è stato pari a 494,05 milioni di dollari USA, con un incremento del 2% rispetto alle cifre del 1996 (484,38 milioni di dollari). Anche i flussi di cassa hanno mostrato un incremento assai positivo del 34,8%, salendo dagli 8,28 milioni di dollari del 1996 agli 11,15 milioni di dollari del 1997. Tuttavia, questi dati si sono tradotti in una perdita molto deludente di 1,06 milioni di dollari in termini di introiti operativi (la perdita del 1996 era stata di 158.948 dollari), con una perdita netta di 6,17 milioni di dollari, mentre il 1996 aveva fatto registrare profitti per 1,67 milioni di dollari.

La ragione principale dei negativi risultati del 1997 è stata la necessità di provvedere alla cancellazione di grossi debiti. Alla fine del 1997 ed all'inizio di quest'anno, la Arcus Logistics, uno dei principali clienti della ICF, si è ritrovata in difficoltà finanziarie. Lo spedizioniere, che disponeva di uffici in Germania, in Spagna e nel Regno Unito, era impegnato nella distribuzione di parti di auto e di pezzi di ricambio dalla Germania alla Spagna, dalla Germania alla Polonia e dal Regno Unito all'Italia, fino a quando la ICF ha preso l'inaudito provvedimento di porre un blocco sui suoi carichi il 25 febbraio scorso (si ritiene che gli altri uffici della Arcus, tra cui quelli localizzati in Belgio ed in Polonia, non vi fossero coinvolti). Poco dopo è seguita la smobilitazione della società; ciò ha richiesto l'accantonamento di una cifra di 6,71 milioni di dollari nel bilancio relativo al 1997 della ICF. E' interessante notare come, se non si fosse verificato questo evento, i risultati operativi della ICF avrebbero fatto registrare profitti per circa 5,65 milioni di dollari, rispetto alla perdita di 164.429 dollari del 1996.

A credito della ICF, occorre segnalare come la rete di produttori di auto già esistente con la Arcus sia stata mantenuta in vita dopo il 25 febbraio scorso dalla ICF con l'assistenza di vari spedizionieri. In tal modo, si è conservato il prodotto ed è stata assicurata la continuazione della soddisfazione dei clienti.

Rasmussen ritiene che da questa esperienza si possano trarre tre lezioni, vale a dire:

  • l'esigenza di controllare più strettamente la gestione del rischio di credito;
  • l'esigenza di un maggiore controllo dei conti finanziari principali;
  • l'esigenza che in questo settore di mercato l'ICF richieda flessibilità (come in effetti è avvenuto).

La società si è comportata molto bene per quanto riguarda il controllo dei costi, particolarmente poiché ha conseguito:

  • migliori coefficienti di carico sui 225/250 treni-blocco attualmente effettuati ogni settimana;
  • una utilizzazione maggiormente efficace dei vagoni che le appartengono, riducendo in tal modo le esigenze di noleggio. L'utilizzazione più efficace ha comportato la dismissione di alcuni dei carri più obsoleti ed il rimpiazzo con un minor numero di nuove unità;
  • la riduzione dei costi di manutenzione dei carri mediante un uso maggiormente efficiente delle risorse;
  • la riduzione dei costi generali di gestione in termini sia di salari che di oneri correlati. Il conto delle spese generali dell'ufficio principale di Basilea è diminuito per il secondo anno consecutivo. Ciò, a sua volta, ha condotto ad un incremento del fatturato conseguito per unità di personale del 6,7% nel 1997 rispetto al 1996.

In termini di utilizzazione dei carri, alla fine del 1997 il parco-carri adibiti al trasporto combinato della ICF consisteva di 6.236 unità (-3,9% rispetto al 1996), con una capacità di carico pari a 19.096 TEU (-1,9%). Qualcosa come il 62% di tutto il traffico è stato movimentato con proprio materiale rotabile, rispetto al 57% dell'anno precedente. L'obiettivo è quello di raggiungere il 75%. Nel trasporto a bassa temperatura, il parco-carri utilizzato per i trasporti ammontava a 1.610 vagoni appartenenti all'ICF ed a 4.963 vagoni appartenenti a compagnie ferroviarie ma gestiti dalla ICF.

Pur lavorando insieme ai proprietari dei carri (29 compagnie ferroviarie), la ICF desidera altresì svilupparsi autonomamente mediante programmi di attività propri. Uno di questi modi è costituito dalle associazioni commerciali con altri operatori, un riassunto delle quali è contenuto nella Tabella 1. Commenta Rasmussen: "Le associazioni commerciali rappresentano una buona maniera per agevolare una utilizzazione maggiormente efficiente dei carri ferroviari. Di conseguenza, lavoriamo con i nostri ex concorrenti laddove sia utile farlo".

Rasmussen ha poi accennato ad una possibile futura collaborazione con operatori fluviali: "Una qual certa forma di cooperazione con operatori fluviali in futuro è possibile. In zone dove la ferrovia è satura, il problema potrebbe essere risolto dall'uso delle idrovie. In alternativa, potrebbe essere commercializzato un prodotto strutturato su due livelli, con un tempo di viaggio più rapido offerto via rotaia ed uno più lento via fiume".

In aggiunta, la società sta altresì portando avanti trattative con operatori marittimi rispetto allo sviluppo di nuovi prodotti. Un esempio al riguardo sono i negoziati attualmente in corso con la Evergreen Line in relazione ai collegamenti che essa richiede da e per il porto italiano di Taranto. Le trattative riguardano il raggio d'azione programmato per la copertura europea ed i servizi di raccordo attraverso quel porto della Evergreen. Tuttavia, è chiaro che qualsiasi sviluppo inerente a servizi ferroviari non potrà superare certi limiti dovuti sia alle infrastrutture portuali che alla carenza di capacità della linea; questi problemi si ritrovano anche in altre zone dell'Italia.

Grosse difficoltà sono state di recente procurate dagli scioperi verificatisi in Italia settentrionale, Francia e Norvegia, sebbene Rasmussen abbia escluso che la qualità del servizio costituisca attualmente un problema. Ha infatti dichiarato: "Il 1997 non è stato peggiore degli anni precedenti per quanto attiene la qualità del prodotto fornito dalle ferrovie. Doveva essere migliorata la qualità allo scopo di offrire un ragionevole prodotto just-in-time. L'affidabilità rimane ancora il più grosso ostacolo per lo sviluppo dei servizi ed il problema non è stato ancora risolto. Sussistono problemi inerenti alla qualità anche in assenza di scioperi". Aggiunge il dirigente: "In tutta Europa le ferrovie dispongono di linee che provvedono al traffico sia passeggeri che merci ed i treni della ICF devono aspettare, alle volte, che transitino prima i treni locali. Sono rari i casi in cui i treni merci hanno la priorità su quelli passeggeri".

Il costo della trazione è un altro problema che gli operatori ferroviari europei si trovano a dover affrontare. La ICF è stata recentemente costretta a sospendere per questa ragione il suo servizio diretto che collegava Londra a Sopron, in Ungheria. Prosegue Rasmussen: "Dal collegamento Londra-Sopron, non potremmo ricavare guadagni nemmeno con una utilizzazione molto alta. I costi ferroviari sono troppo alti, almeno del 25%. Ci piacerebbe rimettere in piedi questo prodotto, ma nel frattempo nessun altro operatore è interessato a causa degli elevati costi che esso comporta. Sulla tratta Rotterdam-Ungheria, abbiamo combinato il servizio con quello della connessione Rotterdam-Austria, ma stiamo cercando di ripristinarne uno diretto. Una volta completate le infrastrutture, ci riproveremo".

Malgrado tali problemi, le prospettive per il 1998 sono buone per la ICF, dal momento che si registra un aumento della domanda di trasporto ferroviario. Ci si aspetta che questa linea di tendenza continui. La società ritiene che il 1998 possa costituire un'annata-record, con trasporti che potranno superare gli 1,3 milioni di TEU nel settore del trasporto combinato ed i 41.000 TEU nel mercato della temperatura controllata. Il fatturato annuo atteso, nel contempo, dovrebbe superare 493 milioni di dollari USA.

Questa ottimistica prospettiva, tuttavia, è attenuata dalla prudenza. L'ultima parola spetta a Menzinger, il quale dichiara: "Secondo me, al momento attuale nell'ambito del trasporto intermodale in Europa non si riescono a realizzare profitti abbastanza alti in modo da assicurare il suo sviluppo a lungo termine".
