Inflazione in crescita per i prezzi dei contenitori nuovi

Dopo essere rimasti relativamente stabili per più di un anno, i prezzi dei contenitori nuovi per carichi secchi quest'anno sono saliti e adesso hanno raggiunto un livello mai visto dai primi anni '90.

Ciò ha suscitato il timore - sia fra i produttori sia fra gli acquirenti di contenitori - che si possa essere in vista di una nuova era di inflazione.

Il prezzo franco fabbrica "da titolo" per uno standard da 20 piedi ha superato i 2.500 dollari USA per una consegna all'inizio del terzo trimestre, mentre si prevede un prezzo di 2.600 dollari ed oltre per il trimestre finale dell'anno.

Addirittura, c'è che parla di un prezzo in salita fino a 3.000 dollari.

Il corrispondente prezzo per uno standard da 40 piedi è stato superiore ai 4.000 dollari, mentre un 40 piedi high-cube costava più di 4.250 dollari nello scorso mese di giugno.

Questi prezzi sono più alti del 25% rispetto alla media del 2007 e sono quasi il doppio rispetto al livello di sei anni fa, l'ultimo nadir nel settore produttivo.

Il parallelo più prossimo alla situazione attuale è quello della fine anni '80, quando i prezzi dei contenitori finiti si erano rafforzati rapidamente in risposta alla domanda elevata, alla limitata capacità di produzione ed ai crescenti costi delle materie prime.

Di conseguenza, erano poi rimasti vicini ai 3.000 dollari USA per un 20 piedi per diversi anni.

Come allora, i prezzi dei nuovi box in questo momento sono guidati verso l'alto dagli incrementi da record del costo dell'acciaio e di molte altre materie, come il legno compensato.

In parte, ciò è stato indotto dal crescente livello di consumo di tali materie in Cina, India ed altri paesi in via di rapido sviluppo.

Il prezzo medio dell'acciaio Corten, che da lungo tempo costituisce il materiale di produzione principale dei contenitori, è aumentato di più del 60% nella prima metà del 2008, raggiungendo una punta di 1.000 dollari USA/tonnellata a luglio.

Il prezzo medio del Corten era stato di circa 600 dollari per tonnellata per gran parte del biennio 2006/07.

Inoltre, è probabile che il prezzo continui ad aumentare, dato che la domanda per tutti i tipi di acciaio in Cina resta alta.

I lavori di ricostruzione resi necessari dal recente terremoto hanno spinto ancora più in alto questa domanda.

L'ultimo balzo verso l'alto è stato provocato all'inizio di quest'anno, quando i timori di una carenza a livello globale avevano spinto il prezzo contrattato dei minerali di ferro al di là del suo precedente massimo.

La conseguenza era stata un aumento di più del 65%, che inizialmente aveva spostato in alto il costo medio per tonnellata del Corten oltre gli 850 dollari USA nel corso del mese di marzo.

Questo prezzo era più alto di 250 dollari rispetto alla sua media inerente alle consegne del primo trimestre, ma ad aprile sono seguiti ulteriori incrementi, quando il prezzo è andato oltre la barriera dei 900 dollari/tonnellata.

Le cifre medie quotate, tuttavia, nascondono tutta una fascia di prezzi diversi, dato che il pannello di piccolo spessore (4 mm) attira una maggiorazione per tonnellata maggiore rispetto a quella delle sezioni posteriori o strutturali di spessore più standard.

L'impatto di questi maggiori prezzi dell'acciaio è stato tremendo, dal momento che nella costruzione basilare di un contenitore 20 piedi standard vengono utilizzate fino a 1,7 tonnellate di acciaio Corten, mentre per l'unità da 40 piedi ce ne vogliono oltre 2,9 tonnellate.

Ciò equivale ad un'attuale spesa di oltre 1.700 dollari USA per un 20 piedi, rispetto ai circa 1.050 dollari dell'inizio di quest'anno.

Il costo delle forniture di acciaio per un 20 piedi, perciò, si è incrementato di quasi 650 dollari nel corso del 2008, mentre i prezzi dei box finiti sono cresciuti di quasi 500 dollari.

Di conseguenza, i margini dei costruttori di box sono stati erosi.

Gran parte dei produttori ha dovuto inoltre fronteggiare una sempre più incerta filiera delle forniture, dal momento che alcune fonderie dell'acciaio cinesi hanno limitato la produzione di acciaio Corten a favore di acciai meno speciali utilizzati nell'industria edile.

Questa linea di tendenza si era manifestata l'ultima volta nel 2004/04, quando i costruttori di box cinesi avevano dovuto importare un po' di acciaio Corten dalla Corea del Sud e dal Giappone ed a prezzi notevolmente più alti.

Ciò aveva sospinto i prezzi dei contenitori nuovi sino a 2.000 dollari USA per un 20 piedi, mettendo così fine ad un percorso deflattivo di oltre cinque anni, durante i quali il prezzo medio di un contenitore da 20 piedi non aveva mai superato i 1.500 dollari USA.

I produttori di box sono altresì alle prese con grossi aumenti del costo di altri materiali, quali il legname per la pavimentazione e le vernici, che sono del 50% più cari rispetto a due anni fa.

I prezzi dei contenitori finiti sono stati ulteriormente spinti verso l'alto dallo stabile apprezzamento della valuta cinese, lo yuan RMB, nonché dalla fine degli sconti fiscali erogabili dal governo sulle produzioni riesportate.

Inoltre, i costi di gestione delle fabbriche sono stati spronati verso l'alto dalla inesorabile crescita dei costi energetici e, più recentemente, a causa della domanda più elevata per i salari.

Questi ultimi vengono alimentati dalla crescente carenza di abilità professionali in tutta la Cina e dalla nuova normativa recentemente emanata dal governo allo scopo di assicurare una migliore salvaguardia alla già enorme forza lavoro nelle fabbriche del paese.

Si sa che la nuova legislazione in materia di lavoro dovrebbe limitare la lunghezza dei turni, introducendo altresì la settimana lavorativa su cinque giorni ed istituendo compensi più generosi per le ore di straordinario ed il lavoro festivo.

Si è persino parlato dell'istituzione di una qualche forma di salario minimo.

Gli acquirenti di contenitori sono adesso meno in grado di conseguire garanzie sui prezzi in relazione alla produzione prenotata anticipatamente, nonché sui tempi di consegna in poche settimane, a meno che non si tratti di contratti inerenti a grosse ordinazioni.

Di conseguenza, alcuni acquirenti stanno perdendo l'appetito; ne risulta che ci si aspetta che la produzione a livello mondiale diminuisca.

Ciò potrebbe comportare il massimo impatto sui vettori marittimi, dal momento che questi ultimi tendono ad incrementare le proprie acquisizioni di box nel corso della (solitamente meno attiva) seconda metà dell'anno, quando tradizionalmente vengono offerti i maggiori sconti sui prezzi.

Peraltro, il calo della produzione dei contenitori è altresì una conseguenza della domanda più debole, nonché del rallentamento della crescita dei traffici a livello globale.

Anche se il registro mondiale delle ordinazioni delle portacontainer è in salute, i volumi di traffico containerizzato quest'anno probabilmente si espanderanno del 7% e non del 10% previsto all'inizio dell'anno.

Ancor più decisivo è il fatto che molti vettori marittimi non sono stati in grado di assicurarsi tariffe di nolo più alte in un momento in cui i loro costi di gestione e quelli finanziari stanno salendo.

Di conseguenza, alcuni servizi sono stati ridotti od eliminati.

Il risultato è che si prevede che la produzione mondiale di box diminuisca di almeno il 10% quest'anno; nel 2007, la produzione complessiva aveva totalizzato un record di 4,25 milioni di TEU (10 miliardi di dollari USA); dal punto di vista del valore, peraltro, ci si aspetta un incremento del 10%.

Le previsioni attuali sono che la produzione nel 2008 totalizzerà circa 3,8 milioni di TEU, per un valore contrattuale di 11 miliardi di dollari USA.

Anche i proventi potrebbero migliorare per i produttori di contenitori, ma i margini sono sotto pressione.

La CIMC Group - il maggiore produttore mondiale - ad esempio, ha fatto registrare un calo del 30% dei propri profitti netti per il trimestre di apertura del 2008.

Il giro d'affari della società ed i risultati in TEU sono cambiati di poco rispetto al corrispondente periodo del 2007.

Gran parte delle perdite d'introito è da attribuirsi alle attività di costruzione di contenitori per carichi secchi della società, sebbene si siano verificate prima che i rilevanti incrementi dei prezzi delle materie prima si diffondessero nel sistema.

I proventi della CIMC relativi alla produzione di contenitori ed a tutti i servizi ad essa correlati erano in precedenza giunti sino a 34 miliardi di yuan RMB (5 miliardi di dollari USA) nel 2007, con un incremento di oltre il 30% rispetto ai 26 miliardi di yuan RMB (3,4 miliardi di dollari USA) generati nel corso del 2006.

La Singamas Container Holdings - il secondo produttore di box del mondo (che controlla il 20% in termini di TEU - ha incrementato i propri proventi del 70% nel 2007, sino ad oltre 1,5 miliardi di dollari USA, rispetto ad un aumento della produzione di TEU del 44%; anche i suoi profitti sono cresciuti notevolmente.

Peraltro, quest'anno fino adesso è stato notato un rallentamento di questi ultimi.

Le prospettive in relazione all'annata completa sono ora meno rassicuranti per entrambe le società.

Anche se ci si aspetta che le vendite complessive di contenitori della CIMC crescano sino a 5,5 miliardi dollari, la sua produzione di TEU sarà quasi certamente in diminuzione per quanto riguarda il 2007 mentre la capacità di conseguire profitti sarà più debole.

La Singamas potrebbe esserne danneggiata anche più seriamente, dal momento che essa attualmente dispone di un eccesso di infrastrutture maggiore rispetto alla CIMC e pertanto potrebbe ritrovarsi con un ammontare anche più grande di riduzioni da effettuare.

Si può sostenere che un calo della domanda sia l'ultima cosa di cui il settore della costruzione di box cinese abbia bisogno, dal momento che qualsiasi riduzione dei turni lavorativi avrà un ulteriore impatto negativo sul livello delle prestazioni che già sono sotto pressione a causa dei costi in aumento.

Tuttavia, la capacità costruttiva annua di contenitori è stata largamente superata negli ultimi 12 mesi, nella misura di circa 5,5 milioni di TEU (sulla base di operazioni su due turni), dato che alcune nuove fabbriche stanno scendendo in campo.

Quest'anno si potrebbe anche assistere ad un declino, dal momento che le società manderanno in naftalina gli impianti più vecchi e meno economici.

Ciò contrasta decisamente con la situazione del biennio 2006707, quando oltre un milione di TEU di capacità in eccesso era stato immesso al netto delle fabbriche chiuse.

Questo aveva fatto seguito all'avvio, e/o alla ristrutturazione estensiva, di più di una dozzina di fabbriche.

Inoltre, gli ultimi piani governativi finalizzati alla limitazione del numero o della lunghezza dei turni giornalieri potrebbero fungere da ulteriore impedimento, tagliando effettivamente la produzione presso alcuni impianti.

L'incremento della costruzione di equipaggiamento speciale è un'altra potenziale via di uscita per i produttori sotto assedio, che si trovano ad affrontare aumenti insostenibili dei costi delle proprie unità per carichi secchi, mentre i costi di gestione sia dei refrigerati che delle cisterne sono stati più stabili.

Sebbene il costo di produzione di un'unità reefer sia salito negli ultimi mesi, l'incremento complessivo è stato inferiore al 10%.

Il prezzo attuale di un contenitore high-cube refrigerato da 40 piedi (macchinari esclusi) è ancora una volta prossimo a 10.000 dollari USA, essendo in precedenza sceso sotto i 9.500 dollari USA alla fine del 2007.

Questa recente fluttuazione dei prezzi è stata causata in gran parte dal cambiamento di rotta dei prezzi dell'acciaio inossidabile, che avevano raggiunto il proprio apice all'inizio del 2007 (oltre 5.000 dollari USA a tonnellata per le qualità più elevate), ma poi erano diminuiti.

Malgrado la ripresa, essi non hanno ancora conseguito nuovamente il proprio punto più alto raggiunto in precedenza.

Il settore in cui i produttori di refrigerati sono stati colpiti maggiormente è quello del prezzo delle componenti, come le sezioni di alluminio e gli agenti di schiuma refrigerante.

Anche i prezzi dell'energia ed i costi del lavoro sono aumentati.

I recenti movimenti del prezzo dei reefer quest'anno sono stati ulteriormente influenzati dalla riduzione della domanda.

Al contrario del 2007, quando la produzione arretrata era di notevoli dimensioni e tutti gli impianti per reefer avevano conseguito risultati da record, il mercato quest'anno è molto più tranquillo, tanto che in alcune fabbriche si notano pile di eccedenze.

Anche i prezzi dei macchinari si sono attestati a livelli stabili, il che ha comportato fluttuazioni relativamente piccole nel prezzo finale delle unità reefer consegnate.

Quest'ultimo viene calcolato in circa 18.500 dollari USA per un high-cube da 40 piedi, partendo dal presupposto di specifiche "medie"; esso è assai prossimo al proprio livello di un anno fa ed è inferiore solamente di alcuni punti percentuali rispetto ai prezzi più bassi quotati alla fine del 2007.

Anche i prezzi dei contenitori cisterna ISO sono rimasti stabili, essendosi attestati mediamente sui 30.000 dollari USA per i modelli "standard".

Ciononostante, questo prezzo è circa il doppio di quello quotato cinque/sei anni fa, il cui aumento è da attribuirsi ai maggiori costi dell'acciaio inossidabile, oltre alla persistente alta domanda di equipaggiamenti cisterna.

Anche se la domanda potrebbe indebolirsi, sembra che i produttori di contenitori manterranno i loro attuali prezzi elevati per l'equipaggiamento standard, dal momento che i costi di impiego stanno crescendo straordinariamente.
