L'evoluzione tecnica della flotta portacontainers

L'edizione 1999 del Containerisation International Yearbook rivela come la flotta totale delle navi portacontainers ammonti a 6.823 navi (per complessivi 5.878.214 TEU), 2.726 delle quali (pari al 40%) sono costituite da tonnellaggio cellulare (completamente cellulare, convertito a cellulare e ro-ro/container).

Combinati, questi tre tipi di nave hanno totalizzato 4,3 milioni di TEU, che rappresentano approssimativamente il 73% della capacità mondiale complessiva di trasporto contenitori. Ciò ha costituito un significativo incremento rispetto ai risultati del settore relativi al 1997, quando le navi cellulari rappresentavano il 70,2% degli spazi-containers in servizio.

Al contrario, le navi rinfusiere/semi-container, quelle ro-ro pure e rinfusiere/containers hanno assistito ad un calo della propria quota complessiva nella flotta mondiale sino al 27%. Questo tonnellaggio viene sempre più confinato in traffici marginali e/o di nicchia al di fuori dell'attività di linea primaria. Rispetto al registro ordinazioni di nuove costruzioni, questi tipi di nave rappresentano meno del 14% di tutti gli spazi-containers negoziati. Di conseguenza, la loro quota della flotta mondiale finirà per scivolare ancora più in basso. Per questo motivo, essi non stati presi in considerazione nella suddetta analisi.

Nel 1998, la componente cellulare della flotta è cresciuta di più del 15%; la crescita più grossa in questo caso è stata registrata nelle categorie relative alle dimensioni maggiori. Nella fascia dimensionale dei 4.500 TEU ed oltre, il tasso di crescita è stato pari ad un fenomenale 52,5%. Questo settore ora assomma più di 450.000 TEU, pari a circa il 10% di tutti gli spazi-containers cellulari in servizio. Si tratta di un notevole aumento rispetto al 5% del 1995.

La maggior parte delle navi della categoria dimensionale più grande sono di progettazione post-Panamax (baglio più ampio di 32,32 metri), nel cui ambito le unità più grandi sono impiegate dalla P&ON (P&O Nedlloyd), dalla Maersk Line e dalla NYK Line. Esse sono anche tra le portacontainers più veloci, con velocità di servizio fino a 27 nodi. Tuttavia, la maggior parte delle navi viene fatta navigare di giorno in giorno tra i 24 ed i 25 nodi, dato che i vettori preferiscono riservare la potenza massima al recupero del ritardo rispetto all'orario, mantenendo in tal modo la perfezione del servizio.

D'altro canto, la tendenza verso l'impiego di navi più grandi e più veloci sui principali traffici est/ovest è in aumento. La Tabella 1 mostra i cambiamenti nella velocità media di una selezione di navi costruite a partire dal 1970. Ciò rivela chiaramente le relativamente alte velocità medie progettuali della prima generazione di navi utilizzate nei traffici transatlantici, Europa/Australasia ed Europa/Asia ed il conseguente rallentamento successivamente alle crisi petrolifere degli anni '70.

Dato il persistere dei prezzi alti in relazione al bunkeraggio negli anni '80, la propulsione diesel a bassa velocità è divenuta la norma. Di conseguenza, le navi costruite nelle fasce dimensionali 750/1.000 TEU e 1.200/1.600 TEU hanno potuto disporre di velocità operative notevolmente più basse.

Dal 1990 vi è stata un'inversione della tendenza e si è verificata una corsa all'impiego di tonnellaggio più veloce. Le nuove costruzioni i cui contratti prevedono la consegna nei prossimi due anni evidenziano ancor di più tale indirizzo, dato che le 8 navi da 5.364 TEU sono state progettate per una velocità di 25 nodi, mentre le 5 unità da 6.200 TEU della Costamare Shipping del Pireo, che sono state noleggiate a lungo termine alla Sea-Land, dispongono di una velocità di 25,8 nodi. Nel contempo, le 5 navi da 5.608 TEU in costruzione presso la Conti Reederei con sede a Monaco per conto della sud-coreana Hanjin Shipping Co hanno una velocità di servizio potenziale di 26,3 nodi.

Navi con capacità di carico tra gli 8.000 ed i 12.000 TEU con velocità sino a 30 nodi sono già sui registri di ordinazione di molti cantieri navali e di pianificazione delle flotte di molti operatori di linea. Diversi vettori hanno espresso un profondo interesse nei confronti di tale tonnellaggio dal momento che essi stanno prendendo in considerazione i programmi di rinnovo della propria flotta per il nuovo millennio. E non vi sono difficoltà tecniche nel costruire navi più grandi, dato che i più moderni motori della Sulzer and MAN B&W sono in grado di fornire spinta sufficiente ad una nave configurata su di un'elica singola per almeno 8.000 TEU (100.000 tonnellate di stazza lorda ed oltre).

Secondo recenti ricerche condotte dalla tedesca HDW (Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft), il progetto più razionale dal punto di vista dei costi in relazione ad una grossa portacontenitori è quello inerente ad 8.000 TEU ed alla velocità di 22 nodi. Tuttavia, il suo progetto in ordine ad una nave di 8.000 TEU è leggermente diverso, poiché l'unità disporrebbe di una velocità di servizio pari a 25,3 nodi. Essa sarebbe lunga (fuori tutto) 338 metri, larga 46 metri, avrebbe un pescaggio di 13 metri ed una stazza lorda massima di 101.600 tonnellate. Questo progetto consentirebbe il carico di 4.492 TEU sotto coperta e di 3.268 TEU sul ponte.

La ricerca della HDW dubita che la velocità possa oltrepassare i 26 nodi a causa degli elevati costi operativi (carburante) e di capitale.

Il mercato delle nuove costruzioni è percorso in larga parte da continue dichiarazioni circa la crescita mondiale dei traffici e le potenti economie di scala associate all'operatività delle grandi navi. Sebbene ci si aspetti che i traffici globali rallentino nel 1999 e nel 2000 tra il 2% ed il 3% all'anno, rispetto ai tassi annui del 6-8% del decennio precedente, ciò rappresenta ancora notevoli ulteriori volumi di traffico per circa 2 milioni di TEU. Le navi vengono costruite per poter durare dai 20 ai 25 anni.

Inoltre, vi è un generale consenso circa il fatto che le navi più vecchie e più lente finiranno per essere dismesse. Il 12,3% (pari a 526.113 TEU) della flotta cellulare complessiva ha più di 20 anni di età e potrebbe essere ritirata dal servizio entro i primi tre anni del prossimo millennio. Nel corso del 1998, diverse navi della prima generazione sono state vendute a cantieri di demolizione, tra cui alcune navi della classe Encounter Bay della P%ON che erano state impiegate nei traffici Mediterraneo/Australasia. Queste ultime sono state rimpiazzate da nuovo tonnellaggio in grado di caricare 2.900 TEU. Fino a 100.000 TEU di capacità potrebbe essere dismesso nel corso del 1999 e la Evergreen ha accennato alla vendita di alcune delle proprie navi più vecchie delle classi G (da 2.728 TEU) e GX (da 3.428 TEU) per gli stessi fini allorquando sarà disponibile altro tonnellaggio post-Panamax più veloce.

Vi è anche un notevole quantitativo di tonnellaggio della metà degli anni '70 in servizio che è caratterizzato da un minore impiego di acciaio e da unità propulsive diesel a bassa velocità. Questo tonnellaggio potrebbe presto divenire poco economico e potrebbe portare a livelli di dismissione relativamente più alti nel corso dei prossimi anni.

Tuttavia, rispetto a molti altri tipi di nave, la flotta delle portacontenitori è giovane e lo diventa sempre di più. Più del 40% di tutta la capacità di spazi-containers è al di sotto dei cinque anni di età, e più del 10% è stata costruita nel 1998. Inoltre, più di 700.000 TEU di nuovi spazi-containers verranno consegnati entro i prossimi due anni e mezzo.

Dal lato delle dimensioni, ricerche effettuate dalla ditta londinese Drewry Shipping Consultants hanno rivelato che i vettori che impiegano tonnellaggio post-Panamax di 6.000 TEU potrebbero conseguire un risparmio potenziale sui costi per spazio-container dell'ordine del 20% rispetto alle navi Panamax in grado di caricare 4.000 TEU.

La domanda dei clienti sta influenzando anche la progettazione delle navi. Se si chiede ad un caricatore/consegnatario che cosa desidera che i loro venditori di trasporto marittimo gli assicurino, invariabilmente - nella lista delle prime cinque priorità - compariranno "prestazioni in tempo" e "tempi di viaggio più rapidi". Questo in particolare è il caso di questi produttori che hanno ridotto le proprie scorte di magazzino e sono passati a processi produttivi just-in-time.

Per i dettaglianti è lo stesso. Sempre di più, essi vogliono che le merci arrivino presso i luoghi di scarico il più possibile in prossimità del periodo di punta delle vendite (fine settimana e giorni di festa), ma senza che ciò comporti la giacenza di grossi quantitativi di scorte. Inoltre, i gusti degli anni '90, improntati all'attenzione alla moda, cambiano più frequentemente ed i prodotti vengono movimentati in lotti più piccoli e su basi maggiormente regolari. Tutto ciò richiede che i vettori marittimi assicurino un maggior numero di servizi multipli settimanali mediante l'utilizzazione di navi più veloci. Per le navi da 3.500 TEU ed oltre, una velocità di servizio di 23/25 nodi sta rapidamente diventando la norma. Attualmente, vi sono in servizio 207 navi per un totale di circa 875.000 TEU con velocità di 24 nodi ed oltre. Tutte le flotte dei principali vettori sono rappresentate in questo settore; alcune delle navi più veloci sono adoperate dalla Maersk, dalla Hyundai Merchant Marine, dalla OOCL e dalla P&ON.

Tuttavia, non sono stati soltanto i pesi massimi globali a puntare tutto sulla velocità negli ultimi anni. Dato che così tanti carichi vengono raccordati da e per i porti secondari e regionali con le porte d'accesso alle linee di navigazione primarie, specialmente in Asia, le compagnie di navigazione di raccordo sono state costrette a sviluppare in tal senso le proprie navi.

Oggi, è di vitale importanza per le navi tra i 1.500 ed i 2.000 TEU poter disporre di una velocità di servizio minima di 19 nodi. Ciò rispetto ai 17 nodi di appena un paio d'anni fa. Le recenti consegne, e quelle sotto ordinazione, sono spesso dell'ordine dei 21 nodi.

Nella categoria dei 1.000/1.400 TEU, i 17 nodi sono la norma ma sempre di più gli armatori e gli operatori preferiscono i 18/19 nodi.

Le nuove serie delle navi feeder ed interregionali (da 1.092 TEU) della Maersk sotto ordinazione preso la China Shipbuilding Corp di Taiwan, ad esempio, sono progettate per velocità di servizio pari a 18 nodi.

Questa tendenza sta comportando serie implicazioni per molti armatori impegnati nel mercato delle portacontainers di seconda scelta, dal momento che molte navi più lente di progettazione risalente agli anni '80 - le BV 1600, BV 1800 e HDV - sono divenute meno commerciabili. Il loro futuro resta incerto e le tariffe di noleggio medie relative a questo tonnellaggio sono diminuite di più del 50% rispetto all'apice di tre anni fa.

In Giappone ed in Australia, ad esempio, i cantieri navali ed i consulenti di tecnologia marittima hanno effettuato lavori sperimentali finalizzati allo sviluppo di traghetti e catamarani superveloci adibiti al trasporto merci per i traffici costieri ed interregionali nell'ambito del bacino del Pacifico.

Nel contempo, la FastShip con sede a Filadelfia continua a far progredire i propri piani finalizzati all'impiego di navi da 38 nodi ed oltre sul Nord Atlantico. Il servizio dovrebbe cominciare all'inizio del 2002. All'operazione così programmata è stato recentemente dato un impulso di benvenuto allorquando la AEI, ditta internazionale specializzata nel consolidamento di merci, ha stipulato un accordo per trasportare mediante questo vettore 15.000 TEU di carichi all'anno.

La FastShip ritiene che i propri rapidi tempi di viaggio tra l'ultimo porto di scalo in Europa ed il primo di scarico negli Stati Uniti saranno concorrenziali con quelli delle linee aeree, ma a costi molto minori. La Volvo, la Eastman Kodak e la SmithKline Beecham sono solo alcuni dei caricatori che hanno dichiarato il proprio interesse all'utilizzazione del servizio una volta che esso sarà operativo.

Il nuovo servizio Europa/Canada della Norasia, sebbene non utilizzi navi di tecnologia simile a quella programmata dalla FastShip, ciononostante è veloce dal momento che si serve di navi da 25 nodi. Con tempi di viaggio da Rotterdam a Montreal di appena sei giorni, le navi ad alta tecnologia da 1.388 TEU della Norasia, che sono progettate per una lunghezza di 216 metri ed una larghezza del ponte superiore di 26,7 metri, hanno introdotto una nuova dimensione ai traffici transatlantici. Da quando la Sea-Land ha immesso in servizio nel 1973 la propria pregiata unità da 33 nodi spinta da turbine SL7, i traffici transatlantici non erano mai più stati così votati alla velocità.

La Norasia ha in programma la consegna nel 2000 di altre cinque di queste cosiddette fregate portacontainers. Sebbene il vettore non abbia reso noto dove le nuove navi saranno impiegate, si dice che debba trattarsi del traffico Asia sud-orientale/Australasia.

Il prezzo del petrolio rappresenta un altro fattore che sta dietro al generale incremento della velocità. I prezzi del bunkeraggio sono molto bassi ed il costo per gli operatori quando si tratta di aumentare la velocità di servizio di un altro nodo è - relativamente parlando - assai esiguo, in particolar modo se i tempi di viaggio più rapidi attirano carichi che pagano di più.

Ad ogni modo, quanto saranno grandi e quanto diventeranno veloci le portacontenitori del nuovo millennio? Dato che le dimensioni sono raddoppiate negli ultimi 25 anni, è verosimile che si verifichi un nuovo raddoppio nel primo decennio del nuovo millennio? La risposta a quest'ultima domanda è probabilmente no, dal momento che il pescaggio sta diventando un problema sempre più grosso in molti porti. Inoltre, sarà difficile assistere ad un'avanzata delle tecnologie motoristiche e della movimentazione dei carichi sufficiente a far fronte a tali navi.

Tuttavia, è verosimile che vi sia molto più spazio per operazioni condotte da navi più piccole e più veloci, come già accade per i servizi effettuati dalla Norasia e programmati dalla FastShip. Si potrebbero ipotizzare navette tra un ristretta cerchia di porti di scalo, dove le navi trasportano carichi - forse CKD - per conto di solo uno o due caricatori. In questo modo il collegamento marittimo diviene parte del processo produttivo, in cui le partenze sono del tutto coordinate con la linea di assemblaggio just-in-time.
