La logistica delle compagnie di bandiera statunitensi: un servizio alla moda

"In questo momento, la logistica è il termine in voga nel nostro settore" ha dichiarato John Hourihan, vice presidente e direttore generale della CLI (Crowley Logistics Inc), consociata della CAT (Crowley American Transport), prima di aggiungere "e la chiave della logistica è quella di accertare dove si possa offrire valore aggiunto al cliente".

Rey Ortiz, dirigente approvvigionamenti internazionali (trasporto marittimo) della importante impresa farmaceutica DuPont, spiega altresì: "Fino a poco tempo fa, i vettori marittimi si interessavano davvero solamente della tratta marittima di un carico. Tuttavia, poiché i loro clienti volevano da loro più di quello, i vettori hanno dovuto sviluppare ulteriori prodotti, tra cui i servizi logistici. Ciò ha dato inizio ad un nuovo fenomeno, che è ancora in corso di sviluppo. Questo mercato è ancora in fase di emersione".

Gary Gilbert, presidente della Sea-Land Logistics, consociata della Sea-Land Service, la vede pressoché allo stesso modo. "Il settore del trasporto marittimo di linea è un campo di battaglia ed è molto prossimo a diventare un prodotto di serie. Le navi sono molto simili, il servizio può essere molto simile, e peraltro i clienti dei vettori marittimi hanno bisogno di un qualcosa di più di questo. Essi sono in cerca di qualcuno che sia in grado di aiutarli a ridurre le proprie scorte, a migliorare la propria posizione attinente ai rifornimenti ed a far scendere i costi" ha spiegato.

Anche se sono molto pochi i vettori marittimi ancora di proprietà di soggetti statunitensi, quelle compagnie di navigazione che ancora operano con navi battenti bandiera statunitense e che desiderano offrire pacchetti logistici ed a valore aggiunto ai clienti hanno raccolto il messaggio, come mostra la relativa Tabella.

La Sea-Land e la APL (branca logistica e per il trasporto di contenitori della Neptune Orient Lines) sono vettori marittimi che offrono servizi logistici globali. Ognuna di loro investe in maniera notevole nella logistica da lungo tempo.

La Matson Navigation Company e la Crowley Maritime Corporation sono in qualche modo delle nuove arrivate per l'attività logistica. Entrambe hanno recentemente costituito delle consociate al fine di offrire specificamente questi prodotti a valore aggiunto.

Sfortunatamente, né la Lykes Lines, che fa parte della American Ships, né la Farrell Lines, operatore specializzato di nicchia che serve le direttrici di traffico U.S.A.-Mediterraneo, sono state in grado di contribuire alla presente indagine.

Ortiz della DuPont ha fornito una spiegazione delle diverse condizioni logistiche dei vari vettori marittimi: "Ritengo che i maggiori vettori marittimi, che hanno più risorse, siano più avanti degli operatori minori in termini di servizi logistici disponibili".

Per quanto riguarda i vettori più grandi che sono in grado di offrire maggiori servizi logistici ed a valore aggiunto, l'opinione di Ortiz sembrerebbe essere corretta. Sia la APL che la Sea-Land offrono ai clienti più servizi logistici della Crowley o della Matson. Ma questo avviene perché le prime hanno un maggiore raggio d'azione geografico o globale, o è semplicemente una questione di poter disporre di maggiori risorse? Rispetto alla APL od alla Sea-Land, le capacità logistiche della Crowley Logistics e della MLS non sono globali. Tuttavia, si deve ricordare che non lo sono neanche le partenze programmate da questi due operatori minori. La Crowley è specialista nei traffici U.S.A./America latina ed U.S.A./Bacino Caraibico, mentre la Matson serve le isole Hawaii dagli Stati Uniti.

La divisione logistica della CAT, cioè la CLI, è stata costituita nel 1998, come spiega Hourihan: "La nostra idea è stata la stessa che hanno avuto molte altre società, vale a dire quella di riscontrare ed offrire una gamma più ampia di servizi. Essi comprendono servizi di trasporto marittimo ed intermodali".

Il menù logistico della CLI comprende la gestione della catena della fornitura, i servizi di consulenza, il brokeraggio del trasporto intermodale per conto terzi, i servizi di magazzinaggio interni ed i servizi di trasporto generico (tra cui capacità complete di nvocc e LTL).

Secondo Hourihan, il portafoglio logistico della CLI è suddiviso in due branche di servizio principali.

La prima è quella che si occupa della fornitura di valore aggiunto ai clienti che si servono del trasporto marittimo. Qui si tratta dei casi in cui la CLI agisce tramite la divisione trasporto marittimo contenitori di proprietà della Crowley, ovvero in qualità di soggetto "neutro" con qualsiasi altro vettore marittimo.

La seconda, invece, è quella in cui la CLI agisce quale fornitore di servizi logistici, ma non contratta esclusivamente con gli operatori di trasporto marittimo. "Noi offriamo pacchetti logistici che comprendono il trasporto aereo così come quello terrestre, e, se necessario, anche non correlati con il trasporto. Ciò potrebbe voler significare la gestione delle scorte o dei magazzini" si scalda Hourihan.

La MLS assicura pacchetti logistici tagliati su misura sulle sue operazioni dagli Stati Uniti alle isole Hawaii. La filosofia adottata è semplice: "Minimizzare i compiti assegnati ai clienti nelle questioni di movimentazione di trasporti e massimizzare il valore complessivo dei dollari relativi ai trasporti del clienti". Di conseguenza, la Matson concentra la propria attenzione sui "costi complessivi del terrestre, e non sui prezzi" a prescindere da quale sia la modalità di trasporto prescelta (mare, strada, rotaia o aria).

Uno specifico servizio offerto dalla MLS è costituito da un programma di gestione della catena delle forniture in base al quale la società "provvede a valutare sino a che punto i clienti forniscano le proprie attività". Al fine di far ciò, la MLS sottopone a verifica la catena delle forniture dell'attività del cliente in questione; se la verifica porta all'identificazione di opportunità in merito, verranno offerte delle soluzioni al cliente. Queste soluzioni possono assumere la forma di una riduzione dei tempi ciclici, portando i prodotti sugli scaffali più rapidamente in modo da abbassare le esigenze in termini di scorta. La finalità, in tutti i casi, è quella di assicurare la riduzione dei costi della clientela.

Le capacità logistiche della APL sono note. La portata dei servizi logistici ed a valore aggiunto della APL è in effetti ampia, essendo essi diffusi in Asia, Europa e nelle Americhe. Essa dispone di oltre 3.500 impiegati a ciò dediti nella sola Asia, ha 104 uffici in tutto il mondo e circa sei milioni di piedi quadrati di spazio complessivo di magazzini. Messe insieme, queste cifre generano quasi 330 milioni di dollari di entrate logistiche ogni anno. Una grossa cifra, ma relativamente piccola se si considera che la APL sostiene che la logistica al momento attuale è un settore da 235 miliardi di dollari che cresce del 27% all'anno.

La APL vorrebbe che le proprie entrate complessive derivanti dalle operazioni logistiche crescessero sino al 30% entro i prossimi cinque anni (attualmente, esse sono attestate all'8% circa). Al fine di contribuire a conseguire ciò, essa ha già costituito società distinte allo scopo di assicurare ai clienti diversi pacchetti logistici tagliati su misura. Ad esempio, la ACS Logistics fornisce il consolidamento ed il deconsolidamento internazionale, la gestione informatica ed i servizi di magazzinaggio.

David L. Noe, vice presidente delle vendite globali della APL, ha spiegato che cosa muove la società: "Molti settori industriali stanno diventando più globali ed è in atto un diffuso processo di consolidamento presso diversi settori. Di conseguenza, le catene delle forniture stanno diventando molto più lunghe e più complesse. Al fine di gestirle, vi è bisogno di tutti i contributi possibili. La gestione efficace di una catena delle forniture può significare per il cliente il risparmio di un sacco di soldi. Ma è necessario, per noi, essere in grado di competere su scala globale".

Come la APL, la Sea-Land è un fornitore di logistica globale. Attraverso la propria consociata Sea-Land Logistics, che farà parte della nuova organizzazione Maersk-SeaLand, 87 uffici situati in 44 paesi diversi soddisfano le esigenze relative alla catena delle forniture dei clienti sparsi in Asia, Europa, America Latina e Nordamerica. Gilbert ha spiegato così il ruolo svolto dalla Sea-Land Logistics: "Dietro le quinte di tutti i nostri clienti, vi è una storia simile da raccontare. Essi hanno bisogno di far calare le esigenze in termini di scorte e nel contempo di far sì che le vendite aumentino. Perciò, i nostri clienti desiderano che venga fornita loro una soluzione per far fronte a tale scenario. E' essenziale che noi, quale impresa di trasporto, assistiamo i nostri clienti per fargli raggiungere migliori risultati finanziari".

In conseguenza di tale approccio, Gilbert ha dichiarato che la Sea-Land Logistics ha cambiato la propria natura. "Abbiamo mutato il nostro nome da Buyers Consolidated in Sea-Land Logistics semplicemente perché ci siamo allargati da consolidatori puri a soggetti in grado di offrire una gamma completa di servizi logistici" illustra Gilbert.

A prescindere dalla copertura geografica o dai beni patrimoniali o dagli investimenti, le forze attive che stanno dietro all'offerta dei servizi a valore aggiunto e logistici dei vettori marittimi sono l'informatica e la fornitura di informazioni e dati.

David Movsky, dirigente attività marittime mondiali della Eastman Kodak, con sede a Rochester (New York), mette il discorso in prospettiva: "Dal punto di vista dei caricatori, l'informatica resta la vera e propria chiave della logistica e l'EDI è davvero il meccanismo adatto a fornirla".

In effetti, il discorso sull'informatica e sull'offerta di informazioni deve farsi a proposito dei settori in cui i grossi vettori marittimi ritengono che le loro operazioni logistiche possano seriamente aggiungere valore ai propri clienti: in particolar modo, le loro attività inerenti alla catena delle forniture.

Robert Hanelt, direttore del marketing e della pianificazione della ACS, esprime la propria opinione sull'argomento: "L'informatica resta il differenziatore-chiave del settore logistico. L'intenzione della ACS è quella di sviluppare soluzioni informatiche integrate per i propri clienti".

Gilbert della Sea-Land Logistics è d'accordo. "Per noi, un'impresa logistica di successo è innanzitutto una società di sistemi, nonché una che disponga di beni" argomenta, aggiungendo poi "l'informatica è la principale componente in grado di offrire un ritorno di informazioni al cliente".

Gilbert ha spiegato altresì che il recapito delle informazioni al cliente si ottiene in tre modi diversi. Il primo consiste nell'uso dei prodotti fondamentali di tracking e tracing, ovvero mediante Internet o EDI. Il secondo consiste nella notifica su allarme, vale a dire l'essere in grado di accertare quando qualcosa nell'ambito della catena delle forniture non va come dovrebbe. La terza modalità, alla quale Gilbert ha fatto riferimento come "l'elemento-guida", consiste nel poter disporre di un buon sistema e database in grado di determinare che cosa succede potenzialmente nel contesto della catena delle forniture.

"La tecnologia dei dati e la lettura delle informazioni, quelle presenti al momento nella catena delle forniture, possono condurre alle "scorte virtuali". Una volta che ciò sia disponibile, è allora possibile pre-pianificare tutti gli aspetti e le attività della catena delle forniture prima che gli eventi si verifichino realmente" ha chiarito Gilbert.

Si tratta di qualcosa che senza dubbio non piacerà a Movsky della Eastman Kodak. "I vettori debbono riferire a noi caricatori qualsiasi informazione relativa allo stato delle nostre merci. I prodotti basati su tracking e tracing possono farlo, ma oggi queste cose fanno in realtà parte delle aspettative di un caricatore. Noi ci aspettiamo che quei i prodotti tracking e tracing di base possano essere utilizzati dai vettori. I vettori medesimi riconoscono di dover continuare a sviluppare altri servizi" sostiene Movsky.

Gli investimenti in tecnologia informatica al fine di sviluppare ulteriori prodotti e servizi correlati con la suddetta tecnologia hanno rappresentato una delle principali attività della APL. In effetti, la compagnia di navigazione ha speso oltre 40 milioni di dollari per il solo sviluppo dell'informatica e la ACS continua a destinare il 10% delle sue entrate lorde agli investimenti in questo settore. Alla luce di questo, non è forse sorprendente apprendere che la APL ha molti strumenti informatizzati a disposizione, finalizzati a restituire informazioni di valore al cliente. Singoli prodotti quali HomePort, QuickReport, NetTrac e ScanFact sono già ben documentati.

Peter F. Weis, vice presidente e dirigente capo dell'informatica della ACS, porta ancora più avanti l'argomento. Egli ha confermato che la strategia complessiva della ACS è fondata sulla realizzazione di "compartecipazioni informatiche" quale metodo per rendere visibile al cliente la catena delle forniture. "I clienti non tollerano errori, cosicché per quanto attiene alla visibilità della catena delle forniture noi riteniamo che la compartecipazione tra tutti i fornitori della catena possa attenuare i potenziali errori. E questo è ciò che i clienti domandano".

Continua Weis: "Nessuno di per sé è in grado di assicurare informazioni davvero significative, di modo che alla ACS lavoriamo con partners di tutta la catena delle forniture al fine di assicurare un maggior valore aggiunto. Non stiamo parlando della fornitura di meri servizi di prodotto, bensì di servizi informatici veri e propri. Questo è il nostro modo per essere davvero globali. Anche se non serviamo una direttrice di traffico particolare, siamo -ancora in grado di offrire ai nostri clienti soluzioni che partono da una piattaforma informatica, poiché riceviamo continuamente informazioni dai partners delle zone geografiche in cui non siamo presenti direttamente".

Quanto al numero delle "compartecipazioni informatiche" che la ACS coltiva, Weis ha confermato che il database della compagnia è collegato con altri 10 vettori marittimi oltre alla APL, così come a numerose fabbriche e magazzini in tutto il mondo. Quantificando, Weis si aspetta che "più di altre 200 compartecipazioni informatiche possano diventare una realtà nel corso del 1999".

Dato tutto questo prodigarsi informatico della ACS, Weis confida che i clienti della società possano trarne vantaggio. "In termini lavorativi, il problema che risolviamo per i nostri clienti è che essi così sanno molto tempo prima quale tipo di carico sta arrivando e da dove viene. I dettaglianti quasi mai sono proprietari di fabbriche, e quindi la Ralph Lauren, per dire, ha ancora bisogno di sapere quando 1.100 magliette tipo polo escono dalla fabbriche, a prescindere dal fatto che essa si trovi in Pakistan, nella Cina meridionale, in Corea o altrove. La nostra copertura geografica e le compartecipazioni informatiche rendono possibile ciò" spiega Weis.

Pertanto, la Sea-Land Logistics e la APL si stanno occupando dell'informatica allo scopo di migliorare sia il servizio che il flusso delle informazioni per il cliente. Anche la CLI, divisione logistica della Crowley, è consapevole della necessità di migliorare le proprie capacità informatiche. A giugno di quest'anno, la compagnia ha introdotto nuovi softwares al fine di migliorare le proprie capacità di documentazione internazionale. Di conseguenza, la CLI è in grado di automatizzare le funzioni-chiave di esportazione per i propri clienti, quali la documentazione per le esportazioni ed il tracking delle spedizioni. Hourihan è irremovibile sul fatto che ciò dia alla CLI un vantaggio aggiuntivo nelle sue corsie di traffico preferenziali. "Noi siamo uno dei primi fornitori di logistica per conto terzi ad acquisire tali capacità" ha detto, aggiungendo "abbiamo un prodotto eccellente in grado di svolgere più funzioni di qualsiasi altro software paragonabile presente sul mercato".

Hourihan ha ulteriormente spiegato che la CLI attualmente assicura servizi logistici a clienti impegnati nell'assemblaggio di automobili, nella produzione di capi di abbigliamento nonché nelle esplorazioni e trivellazioni petrolifere, ma "per ora" egli "non è in grado di fornire altri particolari più specifici in ordine ai clienti". La futura strategia della CLI è quella di crescere con i propri clienti, essendo consapevoli che è sempre necessario assicurare che vengano conservati obiettivi chiari. "Man mano che il giro d'affari dei nostri clienti cresce, così sarà anche per quello della CLI. L'elemento-chiave sarà quello di ricercare il vero valore che può essere trasferito al cliente. Ciò di solito si verifica sotto forma di una riduzione dei costi. Quest'ultimo continuerà a restare l'obiettivo della CLI sempre valido, sebbene, nel caso non si riuscisse ad identificare alcun valore a vantaggio del cliente, allora sarebbe necessario per noi spostare la nostra attenzione su qualcosa d'altro" ha dichiarato Hourihan.

Le industrie automobilistica e dell'abbigliamento sono attualmente all'avanguardia dei servizi offerti dai vettori marittimi. Ciò sembra essere stato prontamente accettato dagli altri settori industriali. La DuPont può anche essere la principale casa farmaceutica del mondo, può anche realizzare un giro d'affari di quasi 200 milioni di dollari all'anno di trasporti marittimi nonché spedire approssimativamente 130.000 TEU ogni anno, ma - a detta di Ortiz - la società non ha ancora tratto vantaggi dai servizi logistici offerti da molti vettori marittimi. "La DuPont, a causa dell'attività in cui è impegnata, è ancora indietro rispetto all'industria automobilistica ed a quella del dettaglio" ha dichiarato, aggiungendo che "le preferenze della JC Penney e della Wal-Mart sono davvero all'avanguardia della logistica". Malgrado ciò, la DuPont è senza dubbio ansiosa di colmare il divario e di conseguire alcuni dei benefici che sul fronte della logistica i vettori marittimi possono mettere a disposizione. Secondo Ortiz, la DuPont di recente ha inviato un dettagliato questionario ad alcuni vettori marittimi selezionati, e, sulla base delle informazioni che le sono state restituite, la società è in procinto di intraprendere procedure di scelta ai sensi delle quali verranno assegnati i contratti di spedizione in ordine a tutti i futuri servizi, pacchetti logistici compresi. "Vogliamo vedere che cos'altro hanno da offrirci i vettori marittimi, specialmente in termini di servizi logistici" ha spiegato.

Timothy Gartner, dirigente arrangiamento trasporti societari della Evenflo Co, con sede a Piqua, nell'Ohio, fornitrice a livello mondiale di prodotti per l'infanzia e per i giovani, è sicuro che i vettori faranno fronte ai problemi una volta che sarà stata coinvolta la società-madre. "La società-madre esercita pressioni sui clienti affinché essi utilizzino tutti o nessuno dei servizi della linea. L'indipendenza che consente di esplorare le altre organizzazioni può spesso ingenerare migliori opportunità" si esprime Gartner.

Movski della Eastman Kodak ritiene fermamente che ci sia stato un mutamento dell'atteggiamento dei vettori marittimi. "Siamo riusciti ad ottenere maggiore flessibilità dai vettori marittimi, ed in particolar modo più flessibilità nei servizi offerti poiché sono state aggiunte altre possibilità. La riforma del settore marittimo ha svolto una parte importante nel contesto di tale cambiamento. Ovviamente, i caricatori vorrebbero vedere sempre più cose fatte dai vettori, ma - in tutta onestà - al momento ce la passiamo abbastanza bene con loro" ha commentato.

Gartner della Evenflo non è così sicuro che i vettori marittimi vedano l'attuale situazione nello stesso modo di Movsky. "Teoricamente parlando, io credo che i vettori abbiano perso di vista la loro attività principale. Anche se la cosa è in qualche modo indotta dal cliente, sembrerebbe piuttosto strano che una mattina il proprietario di una nave si svegliasse e dicesse "ehi, quasi quasi voglio diventare un broker del cliente o un proprietario di magazzini". Troppo spesso, i vettori si servono della necessità di ingenerare ricavi quale motivo per offrire servizi logistici per conto terzi. Comprenderanno le conseguenze dell'offerta di tali servizi?".

Tuttavia, sembra chiaro che i vettori marittimi continueranno ad offrire servizi a valore aggiunto e logistici, le cui forze-guida continueranno ad essere l'informatica e la fornitura di informazioni di ritorno al cliente. Di conseguenza, i vettori potrebbe scoprire in futuro che il settore della logistica è ancor più competitivo.
