Leasing

Grande annata per i noleggiatori di box

Il 2003 è stato un anno al rialzo per l'industria globale del leasing di contenitori, dal momento che la maggior parte delle imprese del settore ha riportato migliori prestazioni rispetto a quelle ottenute nel corso dei due anni precedenti. Le ditte di noleggio dei box si sono cumulativamente impegnate in ulteriori acquisizioni-record di equipaggiamento containerizzato di nuova costruzione nel 2003, allorquando avrebbero dovuto essere consegnati oltre un milione di TEU, mentre molte hanno altresì assistito ad elevati tassi di utilizzazione della flotta e ad un'ulteriore stabilizzazione delle tariffe di noleggio. In breve, la domanda di noleggio ha continuato ad essere sostenuta e molti vettori marittimi hanno ancora preferito prendere i box in leasing operativo piuttosto che effettuare investimenti in maggiori quantitativi di equipaggiamento per le proprie flotte di proprietà o finanziate.

Quest'ultima linea di tendenza in realtà aveva connotato gran parte degli ultimi due anni. Malgrado le più deboli condizioni del mercato del noleggio nel 2002, la richiesta di equipaggiamento containerizzato noleggiato è salita di molto a partire dal secondo trimestre di quell'anno. Tale situazione è stata alimentata dall'inversione di tendenza da parte di molte linee di navigazione che sono passate dall'acquisto o finanziamento di containers per le loro flotte di proprietà ad una maggiore utilizzazione dell'equipaggiamento noleggiato. La loro decisione è stata influenzata da vari fattori, il più importante dei quali è consistito nel fatto che la domanda di traffici in quel momento si stava rafforzando molto rapidamente ed i containers si trovavano sempre più in una situazione di carenza di offerta.

Tuttavia, dal momento che grossi quantitativi di equipaggiamento noleggiato fermo era disponibile presso certe località, molti vettori hanno optato per una maggiore esposizione nei confronti del noleggio a breve termine e master. Alcuni erano anche desiderosi di ridurre i propri approvvigionamenti, allo scopo di procurarsi fondi per l'acquisizione di navi in più o di saldare i debiti. Dal momento che la capacità di conseguire profitti è migliorata per molti operatori, essi sono stati ulteriormente incoraggiati a rilevare equipaggiamento in leasing operativo puro, rispetto al leasing finanziario od alle acquisizioni vere e proprie, al fine di mantenere la maggior parte dei propri costi operativi in equilibrio.

Come suggerito, la domanda in aumento di box a noleggio si è tramutata in una marcata utilizzazione per la maggior parte delle ditte di leasing. L'industria di leasing dei box ha conseguito un incremento complessivo di oltre 10 punti percentuali nella propria utilizzazione media della flotta nel corso del 2002 e nel 2003, il che l'ha sospinta al proprio punto più alto degli ultimi otto anni. Nel corso del 2003, l'utilizzazione si è mantenuta stabilmente ad un livello prossimo al 90% per molte società di leasing, in confronto al livello inferiore all'80% all'inizio del 2002 ed al circa 75% del 2001.

Tale ripresa potrebbe essere vista secondo una migliore prospettiva se misurata in termini numerici, dal momento che essa è equivalsa al ri-noleggio di oltre un milione di TEU negli ultimi due anni. Almeno due terzi di questo totale sono stati reimpiegati nel corso degli ultimi 18 mesi e vi è stata una forte ripresa delle richieste inerenti agli equipaggiamenti meno diffusi, quali i containers standard da 40 piedi (8 piedi e 6 pollici). La crescita complessiva dell'utilizzazione ha comportato un massiccio risparmio per il settore del leasing, equivalente ad oltre 100 milioni di dollari USA in termini di riduzione degli oneri di deposito/magazzinaggio e riposizionamento nel corso del solo 2003. Allo stesso tempo, le tariffe giornaliere hanno fluttuato in misura minore e si sono in genere stabilizzate in linea con i prezzi dei box nuovi.

Il crescente reimpiego del vecchio equipaggiamento fuori-noleggio ha dato impulso al precedentemente depresso settore del noleggio master e ha fatto lievitare in modo deciso le tariffe, sebbene molte siano state le acquisizioni al fine di soddisfare la più transitoria domanda a breve termine. Di eguale importanza sono le aumentate esigenze dei locatari in ordine a containers noleggiati a lungo termine, che hanno alimentato uno dei maggiori programmi di sempre di acquisizioni di nuove costruzioni. I noleggiatori di containers, dopo aver acquisito meno di 500.000 TEU nel 2001, hanno ricevuto più di 900.000 TEU nel 2002 e (sulla base delle attuali previsioni) potrebbero avere preso in carico 1,05 milioni di TEU nel corso del 2003.

Perciò, l'approvvigionamento combinato dei noleggiatori è più che raddoppiato quanto a dimensioni in appena due anni, salendo dal punto più basso degli ultimi otto anni nel 2001 alla propria prima acquisizione di TEU "a sette cifre" nel 2003. Molti noleggiatori hanno acquistato quantitativi record di nuovo equipaggiamento nel corso degli ultimi due anni, con in testa la Triton Container, la Interpool, la Capital Lease, la GESeaCo, la Textainer Group e la Florens Group.

Sebbene si prevedesse che i vettori marittimi e gli altri operatori fossero gli acquirenti dominanti nel 2003, ci si aspetta ancora che le ditte di leasing ricevano almeno il 45% di tutti i TEU. Inoltre, una quota proporzionalmente grossa degli approvvigionamenti degli operatori è stata fatta al fine di rimpiazzare l'equipaggiamento più vecchio nell'ambito delle loro flotte di proprietà. Come tale, gran parte dell'espansione della flotta mondiale nel 2003 è costituita da equipaggiamento preso in leasing operativo a lungo termine (quinquennale).

Ciò ha comportato un notevole impulso delle dimensioni della flotta di box a noleggio, che è stato dovuto all'incremento di almeno 750.000 TEU nel 2003 e ha raggiunto quasi 8,2 milioni di TEU per la fine dell'anno. Ci si aspettava che la sua flotta crescesse del 10% nel corso del 2002, e a metà annata aveva già oltrepassato i 7,85 milioni di TEU. In confronto, la flotta appartenente ai/finanziata dai vettori marittimi era prevista in leggero aumento per poco più di 500.000 TEU, sino a circa 8,5 milioni di TEU alla fine del 2003, il che equivale ad un minore incremento annuo pari al 6%. Il residuo, pari ad 1,1 milioni di TEU, apparteneva ad altri operatori di trasporto (per lo più intermodali); questi ultimi nel 2003 avrebbero dovuto aggiungere alle proprie flotte altri 100.000 TEU. La loro flotta aveva oltrepassato gli 1,05 milioni di TEU alla metà del 2003.

Tuttavia, le acquisizioni destinate ai rimpiazzi dei vettori sono state di livello relativamente alto nel 2003, per circa 500.000 TEU, se confrontati con i circa 300.000 TEU del settore del leasing e gli approssimativamente 50.000 TEU degli altri operatori. Le società di leasing hanno ridotto il proprio ritmo di dismissioni di vecchi box nel 2003 a causa della persistente forza della domanda e dell'elevato livello di utilizzazione della flotta, che ovviamente ha scoraggiato ogni precedente rivendita di unità. Inoltre, l'equipaggiamento più vecchio nell'ambito della flotta a noleggio è distribuito in modo irregolare, con un quantitativo sproporzionatamente grande ancora sotto il controllo dei due nomi di punta, la GESeaCo e la Transamerica Leasing.

La flotta di proprietà dei vettori è sparsa in modo molto più regolare tra le compagnie in questione, dato che gran parte delle ditte più in vista rinnovano un po' dell'equipaggiamento ogni anno. Inoltre, i vettori marittimi ancora tendono a deprezzare i propri box ad un ritmo più veloce di quello dei noleggiatori, che a loro volta li spingono a rivendere le unità più vecchie più presto.

I vettori hanno anche rimpiazzato un maggior numero di contenitori rispetto ai noleggiatori nel 2002, sebbene il divario allora fosse più stretto. Le ditte di noleggio in allora avevano dismesso circa 320.000 TEU dalle proprie flotte, per una rivendita relativa ai vettori di 380.000 TEU. Nel corso di quell'anno, la flotta noleggiata era cresciuta quanto a dimensioni di oltre l'8%, equivalente ad un'aggiunta di 580.000 TEU, mentre le scorte appartenenti ai vettori erano aumentate di appena il 4%, quando erano stati aggiunti 300.000 TEU. Altri proprietari di unità operatori di trasporto hanno aggiunto circa 80.000 TEU alla propria flotta e hanno rimpiazzato altri 50.000 TEU.

La recente e sostenuta crescita dei numeri della flotta dei noleggiatori contrasta con la situazione del 2001, quando essa era aumentata a malapena. Dietro di loro, sono state le ditte di leasing ad impegnarsi nella propria maggiore dismissione annua di vecchio equipaggiamento ed il totale ha persino superato numericamente le addizioni di nuove costruzioni fatte alla flotta noleggiata nel corso di quell'anno. Oltre ai 300.000 TEU venduti per l'uso secondario, ulteriori 175.000 TEU sono stati assoggettati a conversione in leasing finanziario, che effettivamente li ha trasferiti dalla proprietà del noleggiatore a quella del vettore. Nel corso del 2001, la flotta noleggiata è rimasta ferma ad appena poco meno di 6,9 milioni di TEU. Ciò, rispetto ad un incremento di 600.000 TEU nel conteggio combinato unità di proprietà/unità finanziate da parte dei vettori e di altri operatori, che poi sono cresciuti a più di 8,5 milioni di TEU alla fine dell'anno.

Questa precedente recessione nella crescita della flotta dei noleggiatori ha avuto un certo qual impatto sulla situazione complessiva di tali società in termini di quote di proprietà. Le società di leasing detenevano appena il 44,5% di tutti i TEU di box alla metà del 2001, rispetto al 47,5% di un anno dopo, quando l'espansione della loro flotta stava ancora continuando con intensità ed era comparabile a quella ottenuta dai vettori marittimi. Inoltre, il settore del leasing aveva mantenuto il controllo di oltre il 46% della produzione mondiale di TEU per gran parte degli anni '90. L'improvvisa diminuzione della percentuale di proprietà avvenuta nel 2001 aveva procurato sgomento, poiché essa avrebbe potuto alla fine perdere terreno e persino doversi trovare a fronteggiare un declino terminalistico.

Questo timore da allora si è dimostrato in gran parte infondato, dal momento che i noleggiatori stanno rapidamente riguadagnando le quote da loro in precedenza perdute. Alla metà del 2003, essi erano tornati a controllare quasi il 46% dei TEU, e la prospettiva di un'ulteriore notevole acquisizione di nuove costruzioni da parte di ditte di noleggio nel 2002 assicurerà loro un ulteriore piccolo guadagno. Inoltre, un numero ben minore di contenitori rispetto a quanto verificatosi in precedenza nel 2000-2001 vengono oggi riassegnati dalle loro flotte operative al leasing finanziario, il che ha ridotto il precedente elevato tasso di dismissione dei noleggiatori.

Noleggiatori e vettori hanno entrambi dismesso un bel po' di vecchio equipaggiamento da 20 e 40 piedi per carichi secchi negli ultimi anni ed in particolare della dimensione da 40 piedi (8 piedi e 6 pollici), che adesso viene normalmente rimpiazzata dalle unità da 40 piedi high cube. Queste ultime ora rappresentano la percentuale maggiore di acquisizioni di unità standard per carichi secchi effettuate dalle società di leasing così come dai vettori e di conseguenza hanno conseguito il tasso più alto nel contesto della recente crescita della flotta. Il resto della maggior parte delle acquisizioni delle unità standard da 20 e 40 piedi viene perciò sempre più effettuato a fini di sostituzione.

Le ditte di leasing controllavano circa 2,4 milioni di TEU di equipaggiamento standard high cube alla metà del 2003, il che costituiva un aumento del 30% della propria flotta rispetto ad un anno prima (metà 2002). Quasi tutte appartenevano alla dimensione da 40 piedi , con poche migliaia di unità relativa a quella da 45 piedi. Al contrario, l'ammontare noleggiato dei containers non high cube da 20 e 40 piedi è aumentato a malapena del 2% nel corso dello stesso periodo dell'anno, mentre l'ammontare dell'equipaggiamento da 40 piedi (8 piedi e 6 pollici) è addirittura diminuito.

Le ditte di leasing hanno continuato ad acquistare per lo più equipaggiamento box standard, mentre la maggior parte degli altri tipi speciali adesso viene acquistata in quantitativi relativamente piccoli. L'acquisizione di speciali da parte dei noleggiatori nel 2003 era stimata in 38.000 TEU di refrigerati integrali, 6.000 TEU di cisterne, 8.000 TEU di speciali per carichi secchi, e 16.000 TEU di nazionali nordamericani, swapbody o pallet-wide (compresi i tipi "cellulari"). Questo totale combinato inferiore ai 70.000 TEU va confrontato con una previsione di consegna nel 2003 di oltre 950.000 TEU di equipaggiamento box standard.

Molti noleggiatori stanno ritornando al settore delle unità più speciali a causa del suo ambito più limitato e dei costi di investimento ed operativi relativamente alti. La flotta noleggiata di speciali per carichi secchi (principalmente open-tops e flatracks) è già in declino, mentre solo poche aggiunte vengono effettuate ogni anno alle proprietà dei noleggiatori rispettivamente inerenti a contenitori cisterna, cellulari pallet-wide e swapbody. Anche la flotta noleggiata di contenitori nordamericani sta calando anno dopo anno, mentre i noleggiatori cumulativamente comprano di gran lunga meno contenitori refrigerati dei vettori marittimi. Appena un terzo di tutti i TEU refrigerati sono in leasing operativo, rispetto alla quota di due terzi appartenenti a/finanziati dai vettori. La flotta refrigerata noleggiata è ancora controllata da appena sei principali soggetti ed ammontava a 325.000 TEU alla metà del 2003. La maggioranza (70%) è costituita da 40 piedi high cube.

Nello scorso anno si è assistito ad un qual certo rimpasto delle principali società di leasing, in termini di dimensioni in TEU, con la Triton Container che ora si è decisamente affermata quale leader del mercato. Questo noleggiatore aveva già conseguito una dimensione pari ad 1,1 milioni di TEU alla metà del 2003 ed aveva messo in conto di acquisire oltre 150.000 TEU nel 2003. Esso è stato uno dei più aggressivi acquirenti di equipaggiamento containerizzato negli ultimi anni, e, al contrario della maggior parte degli altri operatori di punta, fino adesso ha resistito alla tentazione di ampliare le dimensioni della propria flotta attraverso fusioni. La Triton è ancora controllata dai privati ed opera sia con box per carichi secchi, sia con unità refrigerate.

Il suo rivale principale è la Textainer Group. Quest'ultima si è adesso assicurata la posizione di secondo noleggiatore mondiale, con circa 1,05 milioni di TEU alla metà del 2003. Anch'essa si era prefissa l'obiettivo di acquistare oltre 100.000 TEU di nuove costruzioni nel 2003 e ha altresì sorpassato l'ex primo nome del leasing mondiale, la TAL (Transamerica Leasing), che adesso da molti anni sta riducendo le dimensioni della propria flotta e, di conseguenza, sta limitando gli investimenti in equipaggiamento di nuova costruzione. Ci si aspettava che i suoi acquisti nel 2003 raggiungessero i 60.000 TEU, che ancora una volta avrebbero dovuto essere bilanciati da un egual numero di dismissioni. La Textainer (che fa parte del gruppo sudafricano Trencor) continua a concentrarsi unicamente sul settore dei carichi secchi, mentre la TAL (appartenente alla olandese AEGON) offre equipaggiamento per carichi secchi e refrigerati.

Anche la GESeaCo era in precedenza classificata in prossimità della cima della classifica ed ancora controlla la flotta più grossa e diversificata in termini di valore dei beni. Questa società a gestione congiunta si è allo stesso modo impegnata in uno dei maggiori investimenti in dollari USA in box nuovi nel 2002-2003, allorquando aveva acquistato notevoli quantitativi di contenitori refrigerati, cisterna e regionali per conto delle sue due ditte-madri, oltre ad ulteriore equipaggiamento standard.

L'espansione della flotta è stata tutto sommato più pronunciata per altri noleggiatori posizionati più in basso in classifica, tra cui la Interpool, la CAI, la Florens, la Capital Lease e la Gold Container, ciascuno dei quali ha conseguito una notevole crescita in TEU nel corso del 2002-2003. Le acquisizioni annue effettuate rispettivamente da Interpool, Florens e Capital hanno raggiunto in media i 100.000 TEU o più nel corso degli ultimi due anni, mentre la CAI e la Gold hanno aggiunto circa 50.000 TEU nel corso del 2003. Tuttavia, certi altri operatori, tra cui la Gateway e la Cronos, sono stati meno attivi a causa della carenza di finanziamenti.

Alcuni vettori minori hanno allo stesso modo dato luogo ad una espansione, tra cui la Amficon Leasing, la Waterfront Leasing e la Carlisle Leasing (che continua a concentrarsi unicamente sul settore dei refrigerati). Costoro sono stati recentemente raggiunti da due nuovi arrivati, la Grandview Development (di Hong Kong) e la UES - United Equipment Services (tedesca). Queste ultime sono cresciute rapidamente nel periodo successivo alla ripresa del mercato nel 2002 e già controllano flotte operative di oltre 50.000 TEU ciascuna.
