Ottimi risultati per gli operatori terminalistici indipendenti

Negli ultimi 15 anni, le prime cinque società tra gli operatori terminalistici indipendenti (ITOs) hanno assistito ad una crescita da meno del 20% ad oltre il 50% nel 2006 della propria quota relativa ai risultati nei porti containerizzati a livello mondiale.

Sebbene le cifre definitive in ordine allo scorso anno per alcune società non fossero ancora disponibili al momento dell'indagine di Containerisation International (lo scorso gennaio), si stima - per lo più sulla base delle prestazioni provvisorie - che i primi cinque operatori abbiano movimentato ben oltre 220 milioni di TEU nel 2006. Si prevede che i risultati dei porti, a livello globale, abbiano raggiunto circa 438 milioni di TEU.

Gli attuali operatori di punta comprendono la HPH (Hutchison Port Holdings), la PSA International, la DPW (DP World), la APMT (APM Terminals) e la Cosco Pacific (v. tabella). Tutti questi operatori hanno fatto registrare nel 2005 tassi di crescita sostenuti.

Ognuno di loro, poi, ha rafforzato la propria posizione di mercato attraverso una combinazione di crescita organica - conseguita sia espandendo le proprie infrastrutture esistenti, sia vincendo le gare inerenti alla concessioni di nuove operazioni terminalistiche - e di fusioni ed acquisizioni.

Queste società hanno tutte quante tratto vantaggio dalla buona capacità di ripresa dell'economia mondiale, dalla crescita superiore alla media del settore degli scambi containerizzati (in gran parte indotto dal continuo boom delle esportazioni cinesi e dalla conversione dei flussi di traffico dei carichi alla rinfusa ai contenitori) e dalle opportunità presentate dai programmi di privatizzazione portuale su larga scala nei paesi in via di sviluppo.

Negli ultimi 12 mesi, la APMT è stata particolarmente attiva in questo emergente settore dell'economia, perseguendo lo sviluppo terminalistico e gestendo concessioni in paesi quali la Nigeria, il Ghana, il Marocco ed il Bahrain. Recentemente, la HPH è riuscita a vincere la gara per la concessione di un terminal containers a Manta, in Ecuador, mentre la DPW ha fatto lo stesso presso il porto di Callao, in Perù. Si tratta del primo impegno in tal senso della DPW sulla costa occidentale del Sudamerica.

Tuttavia, le attività di fusione ed acquisizione hanno ingenerato l'interesse maggiore negli ultimi due anni. Sono avvenuto diversi notevoli accordi di alto profilo, tra cui quelli stipulati dalla comunità finanziaria e di investimento, e ciò ha comportato l'aumento delle valutazioni dei terminal containers.

Quelle che hanno speso di più sono state la PSA e la DPW. Entrambe le società - che, incidentalmente, appartengono allo stato - hanno investito miliardi di dollari nell'espansione dei propri portafogli e nel rafforzamento delle proprie posizioni in quelle che esse considerano aree "strategicamente significative".

Nel caso della PSA, si è trattato di Hong Kong, con cui il suo porto di casa, cioè Singapore, da molti anni gareggia per il primo posto di scalo containerizzato a livello mondiale. Lo scorso anno la PSA ha rilevato quote dei terminal di Hong Kong gestiti dalla HIT e dalla Asia Terminals e, a marzo, ha concretamente acquisito il 20% delle azioni della società operatore terminalistico rivale HPH e Hutchison Ports International.

Nel contempo, l'attenzione della DPW si è concentrata sulla realizzazione di una presenza maggiore nei tre blocchi commerciali-chiave dell'Asia, dell'Europa e del Nordamerica.

Nel 2005, il gruppo degli Emirati Arabi Uniti aveva acquisito la CSX World Terminals con sede a Charlotte, nel North Carolina, che le aveva così assicurato una significativa presenza operativa in Asia (Cina, Hong Kong e Sud Corea) ed un limitato numero di operazioni in America Centrale, Europa ed Australia. Poi, nel 2006 il gruppo ha speso 6,8 miliardi di dollari USA per l'acquisizione della P&O Ports.

Questo accordo, nel rafforzare le operazioni della DPW nel bacino Asia-Pacifico - segnatamente in Australia ed India - ha fornito alla società il punto d'appoggio di cui aveva bisogno in Europa (Anversa e Rotterdam), nel Regno Unito ed in una notevole rete, quanto a dimensioni, negli Stati Uniti con sei terminal situati sulle coste orientale e del golfo, più un altro a Vancouver, nella canadese British Columbia. Tutto ciò ha fatto salire la DPW al terzo posto nel mondo.

Tuttavia, la conseguente forte opposizione all'accordo verificatasi negli Stati Uniti - principalmente in base alle preoccupazioni relative alla sicurezza - ha comportato per la società la necessità di venderli tutti, tranne il terminal canadese.

Questa vendita è stata conclusa nello scorso mese di dicembre, ad un prezzo che Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, ceo del gruppo porti e zone franche della DPW, ha dichiarato essere "equo". Il compratore è stato la American International Group, la gigantesca società americana di assicurazioni.

Il dirigente non appare per nulla intimidito dai problemi che il gruppo ha dovuto affrontare negli Stati Uniti: "Come operatore globale, noi dobbiamo essere una forza in questa regione, e non abbiamo definitivamente perso le speranze di avervi una presenza prima o poi. Una delle principali ragioni per cui avevamo acquisito la P&O Ports erano state le loro affermate operazioni statunitensi. Una volta ricaduto il polverone, cercheremo di rivedere le nostre scelte".

Tuttavia, ha ammesso che ciò potrebbe avvenire solo tra tre o quattro anni.

Altrove, la APT ha provveduto ad alcune addizioni ai propri interessi terminalistici, in conseguenza dell'acquisto della compagnia di navigazione di linea P&O Nedlloyd da parte della ex società-madre, vale a dire il gruppo AP Møller-Maersk.

In futuro sembrano verosimili ulteriori fusioni ed acquisizioni nel settore; è probabile che nelle future transazioni siano gli operatori minori ad apparire, quali la SSA (Stevedoring Services of America), la ICTSI (International Container Terminal Services Inc) e la Eurogate, che hanno tutte quante ampliato selettivamente le proprie operazioni.

La SSA e la ICTSI sono state particolarmente attive recentemente; la seconda ha sottoscritto vari accordi allo scopo di consolidare la propria posizione nel suo mercato nazionale, le Filippine, ad esempio a Davao, così come per fare ingresso in nuovi paesi, quali l'Indonesia e la Siria (Tartous).

La SSA, nel contempo, ha manifestato le proprie intenzioni relative al Vietnam. A novembre, il maggiore ITO degli Stati Uniti ha sottoscritto un accordo con la Vinalines e la Quang Ninh Port per sviluppare e gestire le operazioni presso le infrastrutture per la movimentazione di containers nel porto di Cai Lan nel Vietnam settentrionale. Il progetto comprende tre ormeggi e rappresenta un potenziale investimento di 100 milioni di dollari. USA.

Contestualmente, i gruppi di stivaggio ed operazioni terminalistiche cinesi stanno diventando più attive a livello mondiale: la Cosco Pacific, la China Merchant Group e la SIPG (Shanghai International Port Group) stanno tutte quante cercando di espandersi al di fuori del proprio mercato nazionale.

I vettori marittimi, poi, continueranno ad investire nei terminal marittimi, dal momento che cercano di assicurarsi una adeguata capacità per la movimentazione di contenitori al fine di supportare i programmi di espansione dei propri servizi, ridurre i costi operativi e ricercare nuovi flussi di guadagno.
