Le "altre merci", ovvero il raggruppamento nel quale si ritrovano fra l'altro le merci varie e quelle containerizzate, hanno fatto registrare negli anni '60 e '70 la crescita più consistente tra tutte le tipologie di carico .

Dopo un certo rallentamento avvenuto negli anni '80, negli anni '90 i traffici sono ripresi a ritmo sostenuto, portando le quantità trasportate a 1.900 milioni di tonnellate annue (tasso di crescita 3,5% annuo).

Va tenuto presente che questo è un raggruppamento merceologico assai composito, all'interno del quale si trovano le componenti di traffico a più alto valore unitario.

Di particolare rilevanza sono i traffici containerizzati, a cui è opportuno dedicare in questa sede un approfondimento specifico.

La diffusione del container nel panorama dei trasporti marittimi mondiale ha rivoluzionato il trasporto delle merci convenzionali in tutti i suoi aspetti: dal disegno delle navi, alle infrastrutture portuali ed alle pratiche commerciali.

Questa tendenza è in continuo sviluppo, vista la crescita costante del trasporto di merci containerizzate in termini di volumi (crescita del 10% annuo) e di quota percentuale rispetto alle altre tipologie di trasporto marittimo.

Come si vede nel grafico seguente, la crescita del traffico container ha avuto una punta all'inizio degli anni '90 e comincia a dare segnali di rallentamento.

In termini di volumi, nel 1996 i primi 100 porti del mondo hanno movimentato 128.8 milioni di TEUs, mentre le previsioni per il 1997 parlano di 138.4 milioni di pezzi movimentati (+7,45 %).

Per arrivare al traffico complessivo in tutti i porti tali somme vanno incrementate per il 10% circa.

Per ciò che riguarda le direttrici dei traffici, vale quanto detto in precedenza per i commerci in generale, cioè che gli scambi si addensano intorno ai tre poli rappresentati da Unione Europea, Stati Uniti ed Asia, con particolare attenzione all'Estremo Oriente.

Elaborando i dati di traffico dei primi 100 porti mondiali si evidenzia che il Sud Est asiatico (in un'accezione lata che comprende anche Cina, India, Indonesia) movimenta oltre il 50% dei container, seguito dal Nord America con una quota del 18%.

Nei porti europei che si affacciano sull'Atlantico transita il 15% dei container, mentre nel Mediterraneo ne gravita l'8%.

Dati specifici relativi ai movimenti di contenitori nei principali porti mondiali sono riportati nel capitolo relativo ai porti.

Per ciò che riguarda i principali paesi per traffico container, ai primi posti ritroviamo, oltre agli Stati Uniti, numerosi paesi del Sud Est asiatico. Bisogna tener presente che questa classifica è stata redatta con i dati più recenti dei primi 100 porti al mondo per volumi di contenitori, per cui rimangono esclusi i volumi mossi dai porti minori (in Italia si passa dai 2,6 milioni di TEUs mossi dai principali porti ai 3,8 milioni mossi in totale).

Venendo alle rotte seguite, nella prima metà degli anni '80 alcune tra le compagnie di navigazione più importanti, quali l'Evergreen e la U.S.Lines, hanno lanciato i servizi around the world o "giramondo", consistenti in navi di grandissime dimensioni che offrono un servizio integrato mettendo in comunicazione i principali poli di traffico intorno al mondo in tempi ridotti.

Tali rotte mettevano in contatto i tre principali poli passando attraverso il canale di Panama, che costituiva un limite alla dimensione delle navi ed alla velocità del trasporto.

Un parziale insuccesso del servizio "giramondo" della U.S. Lines ha spinto le compagnie a considerare altre soluzioni; oggi infatti, lasciando la sola Evergreen leader incontrastata nel settore dei servizi around the world, le rotte che accolgono la maggior parte del traffico modiale dei container non passano per il canale di Panama e possono essere schematizzate nel modo seguente (collegamenti pendulum):

Per importanza le rotte seguono l'ordine suddetto: fatto 100 il totale delle tre direttrici, la prima nel 1995 pesava per il 42%, la seconda per il 34% e la terza per il 24%.

Dall'esame dei dati relativi alle quote di traffico dell'ultimo decennio nelle tre direttrici sopracitate emerge la tendenza alla crescita degli scambi tra Europa e Far East, la diminuzione degli scambi tra Europa e Nord America e la sostanziale stabilità del peso degli scambi Transpacifici.

Le previsioni formulate dall'OECD per il 2005 confermano un ulteriore lieve incremento della quota di scambi transpacifici (che si attesta al 45%) e fra Europa e Far East (35%) mentre prosegue la contrazione degli scambi transatlantici (20%)

Stanno acquisendo importanza inoltre anche le rotte Nord-Sud fra Europa e Sud Africa, e tra Europa e Sud America.

La rapida e continua crescita del settore è dimostrata non solo dall'aumento dei contenitori in circolazione, ma anche dall'aumento del numero dei porti dotati di attrezzature specifiche, delle navi dedicate in costruzione e delle loro sempre più grandi dimensioni.

Come accennato in precedenza, l'attuale tendenza vede la graduale diminuzione dei servizi around the world, filosofia su cui si sono basate le più grandi società a livello mondiale, a favore dell'attuale concentrazione delle navi sulle tre direttrici principali di traffico.

Sulle rotte richieste da queste nuove tipologie di servizio le navi non hanno più un limite di larghezza massima (prima imposto dalla larghezza del canale di Panama), per cui la tendenza attuale vede un aumento rilevante di ordini nelle navi della 4° generazione, dette anche post-Panamax, tali da poter garantire alle compagnie di navigazione forti economie di scala con una conseguente riduzione del costo di trasporto per ogni singolo contenitore.

Per dare un'idea dell'incremento di ordini di navi di queste dimensioni, basta portare l'esempio della Maersk, compagnia n°1 al mondo nel settore contenitori, che operando già con sei portacontenitori da 6.418 teu di capienza (all'interno di un ordine totale di 15), all'inizio di settembre si è vista consegnare la "Sovereign Maersk" che con 7060 teu di portata si piazza al primo posto della flotta mondiale. Sono inoltre già allo studio giganti da 8.000 e persino da 10.000 teu.

Dieci anni fa (1986) le portacontenitori in grado di caricare oltre 2.500 teu erano il 12,4% della flotta complessiva, questa quota nel 1995 è salita al 29,4%. Inoltre il 60% delle navi portacontenitori in ordine od in consegna è costituito da navi post-Panamax (con portata superiore ai 4.250 teu); nel 2000 questa tipologia di nave avrà raggiunto una quota pari al 9,1% della flotta complessiva, rispetto al 3,8% rilevato nel corso del 1996.

Per quanto attiene all'impiego di queste nuove navi, benché i vettori marittimi siano estremamente flessibili, la direttrice Nord Europa - Estremo Oriente Asiatico sembra costituire la direttrice di traffico preferita.

Per dare un'idea dell'ordine di grandezza dei risparmi che si possono ottenere con queste navi, un recente studio (Drewry Shipping Consultants di Londra) stima che una portacontenitori super-post-Panamax (da 6.000 teu di capienza) possa portare un risparmio, rispetto ad una Panamax ottimizzata (da 4.200 teu), pari al 21% sui costi. Questo vuol dire che, ipotizzato un peso della componente marittima pari al 30% dei costi complessivi del sistema, si verrebbe a generare un margine superiore del 6,3%.

Ovviamente però i vantaggi economici saranno possibili solo nel caso in cui si riescano a massimizzare i fattori di carico. Il limite minimo economico di riempimento per la tipologia di nave post-Panamax sopra descritta è stato calcolato, nel già citato studio, pari al 79%.

Le grandi dimensioni implicano costi nave ed oneri finanziari molto elevati, per cui lo scopo principale degli armatori è l'ottimizzazione del loro utilizzo. Questa esigenza si è scontrata con il fatto che una nave di queste dimensioni, trasportando un gran numero di contenitori, per acquisire un volume di carico sufficiente e per offrire un buon servizio dovrebbe effettuare scali in molti porti con lunghi tempi di sosta in porto e quindi un basso utilizzo del mezzo ed alti costi operativi.

Come soluzione a questa problematica si sono sviluppati i servizi di transhipment: le navi di grandi dimensioni ed alti costi compiono in ogni mercato locale un solo scalo in un porto di smistamento, detto hub, in cui sbarcano tutti i contenitori destinati a quell'area geografica.

Questi verranno successivamente smistati su altre navi più piccole, dette feeder, aventi come destinazione tutti i porti regionali, o verranno consegnati direttamente via terra. L'esistenza dei porti di transhipment fa diminuire i porti scalati dalle grandi navi transoceaniche, incrementa globalmente i traffici e consente agli armatori di usufruire delle economie di scala.

La continua ricerca di come diminuire il numero e la durata degli scali di questi "giganti del mare" porta anche come conseguenza l'aumento di terminal portuali gestiti direttamente dalle compagnie di navigazione: si rileva nelle grandi società la tendenza a gestire direttamente il ciclo di lavoro portuale in modo da avere tempi certi e garanzie di resa, e quindi di contenimento costi, durante gli scali delle proprie navi nei porti.

Sempre in tema di economie di scala, un altro fenomeno che si è prepotentemente affacciato sulla scena dei trasporti marittimi mondiali è quello delle fusioni od acquisizioni tra compagnie armatoriali. Acquisizioni ed accordi vengono perseguiti soprattutto perché permettono di realizzare sensibili risparmi nei costi armatoriali e di gestione, ma anche di razionalizzare il traffico contenitori e di offrire servizi di qualità migliore e di rilevanza maggiore al cliente.

Tra le prime 20 compagnie al mondo nell'ultimo anno si sono verificati diversi casi di fusioni / acquisizioni, la più grande alleanza verificatasi è quella tra l'olandese Nedlloyd e la britannica P&O: per queste società il preconsuntivo per il 1997 sta rilevando maggiori risparmi rispetto al budget ipotizzato e l'obiettivo per il 1998 prevede economie per 200 milioni di dollari. Nella tabella seguente si può vedere l'evoluzione dello scenario, insieme alle variazioni della flotta per ogni compagnia.

Nei prossimi anni nelle posizioni di vertice, stando ai portafogli ordini attuali, sarà possibile assistere ad alcuni cambiamenti: in cima alla classifica si confermerà la Maersk Line con 286.457 teu di capienza, seguita da Evergreen che conquisterebbe la seconda posizione con 279.887 teu, P&O Nedlloyd scenderebbe in terza posizione con 252.053 teu, a seguire quindi Cosco (245.662 teu) e Sea Land (221.592 teu).

Questa situazione potrebbe però venire sconvolta da ulteriori concentrazioni di potere -fusioni od acquisizioni- che si dovessero realizzare, basti pensare alla recente acquisizione da parte della Canadian Pacific della Likes Lines, della Contship Containerlines e della Cast (società di leasing di container).

Oggi però iniziano ad apparire i primi effetti negativi di questa corsa al gigantismo: lo squilibrio tra offerta di trasporto e domanda, ad esempio sulla rotta Europa/Far East, pare abbia già raggiunto il 30% provocando il crollo dei noli, attestatisi a livelli inferiori a quelli di 10 anni fa; a riguardo si deve però rilevare come gli ultimi dati tendenziali relativi al secondo semestre 1997 evidenzino un inizio di ripresa.

Nella tabella sono riportati i noli medi rilevati sulle tre tratte principali di traffico (per ciascuna rotta vengono riportate le due direzioni di traffico), dal terzo trimestre del 1995 al terzo trimestre del 1996.

Nell'arco di quest'anno e nei primi mesi del '98 verranno consegnate altre 74 navi portacontenitori di nuova costruzione (di cui ben 24 post-Panamax di portata superiore ai 4.250 teu), che sicuramente avranno un ulteriore effetto destabilizzante sul mercato, in particolare sugli armatori medio piccoli. Il primo effetto di queste tendenze al ribasso del mercato è stata la drastica riduzione nel numero di ordini per nuove navi che si è registrata nei primi mesi del 1997.
