Il mercato crocieristico mondiale è in forte espansione: nel 1996 ha raggiunto 6.280.000 passeggeri, a fronte dei 5.500.000 passeggeri dell'anno precedente, con un trend in forte crescita previsto per i prossimi anni. In effetti dopo una pausa di riflessione, tra il '94 ed il '95, il mercato mondiale delle crociere sembra aver riacquistato in tutto e per tutto la spinta iniziale, registrando un trend di crescita costante superiore all'8,5% su base annua e beneficiando, nel secondo semestre del 1996, di un'impennata dell'11,3%.

I dati 1995 relativi alla provenienza dei passeggeri evidenziano la continua prevalenza Nord Americana (78%), anche se si riscontra la tendenza ad una lieve contrazione (-2,2% sul 1994). E' comunque da rilevare il fatto che il mercato Nord Americano ha registrato dal 1980 al 1993 un tasso di crescita medio annuo pari al 7,6%.

Gli altri mercati nel 1995 hanno invece presentato una tendenza espansiva (+11,8%).

Con riferimento alle aree di destinazione vediamo che i Caraibi guidano con l'assorbimento del 57,3% del mercato, seguono l'Alaska con il 9,5% ed il Mediterraneo con il 9,3%, altre destinazioni 23,9%.

Per quanto riguarda la tendenza futura, nel Nord America le aspettative relative alla domanda complessiva per i prossimi 3-4 anni anticipano un incremento dell'ordine del 5%-7% annuo del numero dei croceristi; per l'Europa si prevede un'espansione del mercato dell'8% - 10%. Nel 1997 complessivamente Europa e Mediterraneo conquisteranno stabilmente il ruolo di secondo grande mercato crocieristico del mondo, superando l'Alaska e la costa occidentale degli Stati Uniti.

L'evoluzione dell'offerta in questo settore sta seguendo un ritmo molto elevato: l'attuale offerta mondiale pari a circa 130.000 posti letto, a seguito dell'introduzione delle 26 nuove navi con ordine già confermato da qui al 2.000 vedrà un incremento di 46.784 posti (35% di aumento dell'offerta).

Anche in questo settore lo scenario delle società armatoriali è in continua mutazione: la Carnival Corporation, già leader del settore, ha recentemente acquisito la Costa Crociere ed avviato trattative, che poi però sono arrivate ad una rottura, con la Hyundai per l'ingresso nel mercato asiatico; con queste operazioni ha aumentato ulteriormente la propria quota di mercato e conquistato la leadership su pressoché tutti i mercati. Anche i contendenti diretti però non sono rimasti a guardare, è notizia recente l'acquisizione della Celebrity Cruise - Chandris dal parte della Royal Caribbean, mentre la Princess Cruise ha messo sul piatto della bilancia un massiccio programma di potenziamento della flotta. Inoltre nel prossimo futuro nuovi operatori si presenteranno sul mercato, quali ad esempio la Disney Cruise Line del colosso Disney, segno di ulteriori interessamenti in questo mercato.

Nel mercato caraibico, mercato principale in termini di numero di passeggeri, la società leader è la Carnival Cruise Corporation, nel Nord Europa la Princess Cruise e nel Mediterraneo e nel Sud America la Costa Crociere.

I gruppi crocieristici mondiali stanno investendo qualcosa come 17 mila miliardi di lire in nuove navi, con l'80% di questo portafoglio ordini destinato a confluire nelle flotte dei quattro market leader. La necessità di implementare economie di scala sempre più accentuate, che si formalizza sulla standardizzazione del prodotto e sull'abbattimento dei prezzi, sta modificando profondamente lo scenario, provocando una polarizzazione attorno a pochi gruppi in grado di operare rispettando queste regole.

Anche in questo settore, come già visto per i contenitori, si assiste ad una corsa al gigantismo, in modo da poter beneficiare dellegià citate economie di scala: delle 26 navi attualmente in ordine od in costruzione 13 superano le 70.000 tsl e 5 sono superiori alle 100.000 tonnellate di stazza lorda. Al momento esiste in circolazione una sola nave di queste dimensioni, varata alla fine del 1996; la più grande nave in ordine raggiunge le 130 mila tonnellate ed i 4.000 passeggeri di capacità, valori fino a qualche anno fa impensabili.

Se si analizza invece il valore del business, si scopre che il bacino del Mediterraneo è un mercato particolarmente ricco: le stime parlano di un mercato intorno ai 1.240 milioni di dollari, al pari dell'Alaska ed a fronte dei 3.100 milioni di dollari dei Caraibi.

Sicuramente questi dati porteranno ad un ulteriore aumento del mercato mediterraneo, per una politica di diversificazione e per la globalizzazione del mercato da parte delle società leader ed a parziale assorbimento della nuova capacità di posti letto. Segnali di questa tendenza si sono già avuti con l'acquisizione della Costa Crociere, leader del mercato mediterraneo, da parte della Carnival Corporation e con l'aumento da parte della concorrente Royal Caribbean del numero di navi utilizzate nell'area mediterranea. Inoltre si iniziano a notare presenze di navi da crociera in mercati fino a dove pochi anni fa non erano presenti, ad esempio il mercato asiatico ed australiano ma anche l'Antartide ed altre destinazioni fuori dall'ordinario, alla ricerca di sempre nuove destinazioni da poter proporre ai propri clienti.

Già oggi i dati parlano da soli: nel 1997 le compagnie crocieristiche hanno offerto 299 partenze in Nord Europa e 757 nel Mediterraneo, contro le 135 e 689, rispettivamente, del 1996. Il tasso di crescita della domanda in Europa è largamente superiore, con punte del 17/20% di crescita annua, rispetto alla sostanziale stazionarità dei Caraibi.

Nonostante percentualmente il Mediterraneo non sia il mercato maggiore è in continua espansione, oltre che per le ragioni economiche sopra esposte, anche per altri motivi: i punti di interesse turistico, la sua localizzazione geografica ed il clima.

La forza principale del mercato Mediterraneo è la grande varietà di destinazioni e conseguenti escursioni che le compagnie di navigazione hanno a disposizione: aspetti paesaggistici, storici, ludici si fondono in un'offerta a tutto campo, e tutte queste destinazioni non sono mai a più di 12 ore di navigazione l'una dall'altra rendendo così possibile studiare itinerari con la navigazione nelle ore notturne ed il giorno destinato alle escursioni. Inoltre altro punto di forza è il clima, infatti oggi anche le più grandi flotte del mondo stanno iniziando a dislocare nei mesi estivi le loro navi nel Mediterraneo, navi che fino ad oggi erano tenute stanziali nei Caraibi.

Per la sua estensione in lunghezza il Mediterraneo viene normalmente suddiviso in due settori (East e West), e l'Italia viene spesso scelta per la sua naturale posizione geografica centrale come punto di partenza o interscambio delle crociere verso le due aree.

Il profilo della crociera, anche in conseguenza delle rivoluzioni sopra delineate, sta cambiando: da vacanza lussuosa e d'élite si sta evolvendo verso prodotto di massa (concetto portato avanti in particolar modo da Carnival, compagnia n°1 al mondo), con un conseguente incremento dei passeggeri più giovani con livello di reddito medio piuttosto che alto. Non sono comunque da trascurare anche le crociere di nicchia su navi piccole e particolarmente lussuose, significative in particolare per alcune situazioni di mercato italiane quali ad esempio Portofino, Capri, Portovenere ed altre località.

L'evoluzione del mercato crocieristico va inoltre verso una diminuzione della durate delle crociere, principalmente dovuta alla maggior incidenza in termini di volumi del mercato Americano, dove la quantità di vacanza standard a disposizione dei lavoratori è di 14 giorni all'anno (valore inferiore alla media Europea e di altri paesi), fatto che necessariamente porta questi clienti ad essere maggiormente attratti da forme di vacanza più brevi.

Un importante aspetto del mercato crocieristico è che esso realizza un effetto trainante sul turismo delle zone da esso toccate, e quindi ha effetti benefici per lo sviluppo delle economie locali.

Dal punto di vista delle possibilità che questo mercato offre ai porti, bisogna innanzitutto distinguere tra porti di destinazione e porti terminali. Un conto per un porto è cercare di diventare porto di destinazione, per cui è necessario avere peculiarità turistiche tali da poter giustificare l'interesse in uno scalo ed adeguate strutture ricettive a disposizione dei passeggeri; per questa tipologia di scali non sono fattori determinanti le infrastrutture portuali (basti pensare al numero di passeggeri che ogni anno sbarcano a Portofino dove le navi restano in rada). Altra cosa è ambire a diventare porto terminale per una compagnia o per una serie di crociere, infatti per candidarsi a queste posizioni è invece fondamentale avere ottimi collegamenti con i sistemi di trasporto internazionali: aeroporto efficiente e soprattutto servito con voli di linea per le principali destinazioni del mondo, buoni collegamenti stradali e ferroviari ed inoltre infrastrutture portuali (terminal passeggeri, parcheggi, servizi di approvvigionamento nave) efficienti, all'avanguardia sul mercato e convenienti in termini economici.
