Il mercato del noleggio di contenitori: un Paradiso perduto?

"Non è il Nirvana in cui ci trovavamo negli anni '80". Sono parole di Steve Brocato, presidente e dirigente esecutivo in capo della britannica Cronos Containers, parlando dei rischi che connotano l'essere una società di noleggio containers alla fine degli anni '90. Spiega ancora Brocato: "E' un mercato completamente diverso da quello di prima. E' anche un mercato pericoloso, dal momento che se non si è oculati nella gestione si può anche soccombere". La Cronos è riuscita a sopravvivere, ma il 1997 è stata senza dubbio un'annata che preferirebbe dimenticare.

Lo stesso vale anche per la maggior parte delle altre società di noleggio. In termini di attività, il 1996 ed il 1997 sono state annate assai scarse. Le tariffe sono calate sempre di più. Quelle medie giornaliere sono scese quasi del 30% e ne hanno subito le conseguenze in modo pesante sia il settore del noleggio a termine che quello del master (un tipo di noleggio flessibile a valore aggiunto in cui i servizi aggiuntivi come il riposizionamento spettano al noleggiatore). In certe località i contenitori si sono accumulati in enormi pile ed i tassi di utilizzazione sono calati in misura significativa ad una media dell'80% circa. Dal momento che i prezzi dei containers nuovi nel 1996 ed all'inizio del 1997 sono scesi al loro livello più basso mai raggiunto, le linee di navigazione hanno ingrandito le proprie flotte e di conseguenza la quota di mercato.

Brocato della Cronos ha commentato: "Tutte quante le società di noleggio hanno fatto baldoria e comprato. Poi i vettori hanno fatto lo stesso quando i tassi di interesse erano bassi. A causa di ciò, il noleggio master è diventato caro e questo ha comportato serie conseguenze per la Cronos". La società gestisce una flotta di cui almeno il 75% è in noleggio master, mentre più del 75% del suo noleggio avviene in Asia.

In cima a tutto ciò, bisogna aggiungere anche quello che è stato moderatamente descritto da un dirigente di società di noleggio come "un atteggiamento assai competitivo nel settore del noleggio master, in particolar modo da parte di alcuni nuovi soggetti. Infatti - ha aggiunto - se non fosse stato per la Gateway Container Corp e la Capital Lease, questa sarebbe stata un'annata ragionevole".

Se si vuole andarci piano, l'atteggiamento della Gateway e della Capital non è stato predatorio, ma semplicemente rifletteva la situazione in cui si trovavano. Nella loro condizione di società da poco costituite, esse sono state in grado di applicare sin dal primo giorno tariffe di noleggio concorrenziali sui loro contenitori appena acquistati, dal momento che non erano gravate dai vecchi contenitori ad alto costo acquistati prima del 1996.

Alla metà del 1997 la situazione nel settore era così brutta che i noleggiatori affermavano che era "come cadere in un buco nero".

La situazione, peraltro, è migliorata clamorosamente nella seconda metà del 1997 e ha continuato a farlo nel 1998. L'ingresso della Gateway Container e della Capital nel mercato ha dato impulso alla quota di mercato e le compagnie di navigazione di linea hanno smesso di acquistare contenitori per cominciare a noleggiarli. Alla fine, il 60% dei nuovi acquisti è stato effettuato dalle società di noleggio ed il 40% dai vettori, laddove nel 1996 si era verificato il contrario.

Anche le tariffe hanno mostrato segnali di una possibile ripresa ed Andrew Foxcroft, riconosciuto esperto del settore e redattore consulente di Containerisation International, ha dichiarato nel contesto dell'ultima Analisi di mercato di Containerisation International - Il mercato del noleggio di contenitori 1998: "Le tariffe relative all'equipaggiamento da 20 piedi hanno tirato su il noleggio master, precipitato da una media giornaliera di 1,65 dollari USA nel suo momento migliore - 1995 - ad appena 1,20 dollari nel corso della seconda metà del 1997. I corrispondenti prezzi applicati al noleggio a termine sono calati da circa 1,30 dollari al giorno nel 1995 a meno di 0,90 dollari alla fine del 1997. I livelli tariffari conseguiti per entrambi i tipi di noleggio si sono per lo più stabilizzati all'inizio di quest'anno, ma devono ancora riguadagnare molto terreno".

Il presidente e dirigente esecutivo in capo della Textainer, James Hoelter, conferma: "Le tariffe non si sono ancora riprese. Pensiamo che ciò possa avvenire, ma non sappiamo quando. La cosa più incoraggiante è che finora non si sono visti altri tagli tariffari".

Quindi, cosa c'è dietro questo ritorno alla buona sorte e, ancora, il Paradiso degli anni '80 può essere riottenuto? Fred Gutterson, presidente della Xtra International, con sede a San Francisco, ha dichiarato: "Senza dubbio, il fattore principale è stato il cambiamento degli equilibri commerciali. Il bilancio degli scambi a favore del transpacifico era stata una delle cause del calo nel 1996. Il fatto che il transpacifico fosse il traffico principale aveva avuto un forte impatto sul settore. Una volta ottenuto quasi il pareggio, la mossa successiva per il settore del noleggio doveva essere quella di ridurre notevolmente le esigenze di equipaggiamento e, quindi, più o meno 1 milione di TEU sono divenuti sacrificabili".

Robert Ward, presidente e dirigente esecutivo in capo della GE SeaCo, pur ammettendo l'importanza della crisi asiatica, ritiene che i prezzi dei nuovi contenitori siano (e possano continuare ad essere in futuro) i principali fattori che determinano le tariffe: "Le tariffe (nel settore del noleggio master) sono in primo luogo una funzione del costo dei contenitori nuovi. I prezzi sono aumentati in Cina e quindi l'attività non è stata poi tanto vivace, il che a sua volta ha comportato l'effetto di stabilizzare le tariffe".

Le difficoltà nel settore del noleggio hanno comprensibilmente indotto le imprese ad adeguare il proprio approccio al mercato. Il risultato principale derivatone è stato il repentino aumento del numero di fusioni, viste dai più come il miglior modo per conseguire economie di scala e ridurre i costi. Alla metà dello scorso mese di giugno, sono stati dati tre importanti annunci. La Interpool, con sede a Princeton, nel New Jersey (U.S.A.), ed il presidente della Container Applications, Hiromitsu Ogawa, hanno annunciato di avere acquistato ciascuno una quota del 50% della CAI (Container Applications Inc) dalla Mitsui & Co. La Textainer, con sede a San Francisco, ha rilevato la gestione della PrimeSource Holdings e - in quello che è stato l'accordo di dimensioni più rilevanti - la GE Capital, che possedeva la Genstar, e la Sea Containers hanno annunciato la costituzione di un'associazione commerciale al 50%, denominata GE SeaCo.

Queste fusioni - e nel settore si ritiene che non saranno le sole nel 1998 - hanno avuto l'effetto di portare alla creazione di un numero minore di società e però di maggiori dimensioni in un mercato già piccolo. Quello che ne risulta è un sistema imprenditoriale strutturato su tre livelli, ciascuno con la propria strategia (v. Tabella 1).

Gutterson ha espresso chiaramente come secondo lui il settore dovrebbe svilupparsi: "Le fusioni costituiscono la direzione che il settore ha preso e, alla fine della giornata, vi saranno poche imprese su larga scala, una manciata di piccole attività specializzate e - tra questi due tipi - non molte altre. Noi abbiamo mirato decisamente alla partecipazione a consolidamenti e fusioni ed abbiamo cercato di fare le scelte più giuste. Certamente, ci piacerebbe se potessimo portare a termine tutto quanto entro quest'anno".

Non tutti, peraltro, ritengono che non vi sia spazio per gli operatori di medie dimensioni. Hoelter della Textainer ha dichiarato: "Strategicamente, miriamo ad una crescita organica. Noi non ci opponiamo per partito preso ad una fusione o ad una acquisizione, ma non ne abbiamo proprio trovato una che facesse al caso nostro. Non siamo un'azienda di grandi dimensioni ma riteniamo di poter rimanere sul mercato senza procedere ad acquisizioni". La strategia della Textainer è perciò quella di acquistare ed espandersi in modo programmato. "Siamo quasi l'unica società di noleggio che non ordina contenitori a sbalzi" ha detto Hoelter. "Noi abbiamo costantemente ampliato la nostra flotta al ritmo di circa 60.000 TEU all'anno e continueremo a farlo".

Brocato della Cronos è d'accordo: "Al momento attuale, non vorrei essere grosso come la GE SeaCo o la Transamerica. I nostri obiettivi nella vita sono diversi".

Com'era prevedibile, in cima alla classifica dei noleggiatori stanno le due ditte più grandi, la Transamerica e la GE SeaCo, che controllano il 40% circa di tutti i containers in noleggio operativo; entrambe le società hanno in mente un periodo di consolidamento. Al secondo livello si attestano quattro società nella fascia dei 500.000-600.000 TEU. Si tratta della associazione CAI/Interpool, della Textainer, della Triton Container International e della Florens Container Corp, le quali tutte quante hanno effettuato notevoli acquisti per le proprie flotte nel 1998. Al di sotto di loro, esiste un gruppo di società più piccole, guidate dalla Cronos e comprendenti la Xtra International, la Gateway Container Corp, la Capital Lease, la Gold Container, la Catu Container e la Amficon Container Leasing.

La decisione della Transamerica di consolidare la propria flotta è stato il risultato di ciò che Tim Britton, vice presidente anziano e dirigente operativo in capo della sua divisione contenitori marittimi, descrive come "diseconomie di obiettivo piuttosto che di scala".

"Noi avevamo la scala giusta ma non si riuscivano a conseguire vantaggi. Il nostro modello era quello di fare qualsiasi cosa pur di aiutare il cliente; era diventato davvero una specie di mantra. Tutto molto bello, certo, ma il problema era che eravamo divenuti così grossi che era diventato difficile stare nei costi. Poi, alla fine dell'anno scorso, abbiamo avuto un brusco risveglio quando ci siamo accorti che il noleggio master era in perdita. Il nuovo mantra è quindi diventato: qualsiasi cosa per il cliente, ma non ad ogni costo" afferma Britton.

E' stata perciò presa la decisione, all'inizio del 1998, di procedere ad una revisione completa dell'organizzazione. Ciò ha indotto la Transamerica a "concentrarsi" sull'attività primaria, istituendo cinque nuove unità operative (contenitori marittimi, semirimorchi europei, contenitori cisterna, prodotti interni nordamericani e finanziamenti strutturati). Britton ha altresì preso la decisione di avviarsi verso un periodo di ridimensionamento. Quest'anno la Transamerica dismetterà 80.000 unità che vanno ad aggiungersi alle 40.000 vendute alla fine del 1997. Verranno effettuati investimenti in nuovo equipaggiamento e Britton al riguardo ha dichiarato che la società spenderà quest'anno 150 milioni di dollari USA, per lo più in unità da 40 piedi.

Quanto agli acquisti della GE SeaCo - e Ward ha stimato che la società nel 1998 potrebbe spendere 150 milioni di dollari in nuove unità - essi avverranno nel settore dei 40 piedi o degli speciali e non in quello dei contenitori da 20 piedi. Ward ha dichiarato con semplicità: "Non stiamo comprando unità da 20 piedi perché sono in via di estinzione. Noi acquistiamo ciò che riteniamo di poter noleggiare e noleggiare con profitto". Ward non è neanche interessato alla competizione in alcuna corsa alle acquisizioni di flotte. "Vorrei che fosse assolutamente chiara una cosa" afferma. "Non abbiamo alcuna voglia di essere il noleggiatore più grosso. Il fatto di avere dimensioni paragonabili a quelle della Transamerica per noi è irrilevante", aggiungendo poi che la concorrenza ha già danneggiato il settore. Commenta Ward: "Francamente, sono stati effettuati acquisti giusto per il gusto di comprare".

La fusione, ha dichiarato Ward, è stata posta in essere perché aveva senso per entrambe le parti, ma ha ammesso: "C'è sempre un minimo di logica quando avvengono questi accordi. Abbiamo cercato la GE quale nostro socio e sentivamo che questo era il momento giusto e che il prezzo era corretto". La Ge SeaCo viene in effetti amministrata dal personale già in forza alla Sea Containers e che utilizza per lo più i sistemi della medesima società, ma vi sono settori in cui ci si servirà della tecnologia della Genstar. "L'informatica-telematica rappresenta il futuro del nostro settore e noi abbiamo la necessità di avere il coltello dalla parte del manico" ha commentato Ward.

Sulla scia della GE e della Sea Containers, la proposta fusione della Interpool con la CAI aveva assolutamente senso per tutte e due le parti ed era strutturata sulle capacità informatico-telematiche. La Interpool era forte sul noleggio a lungo termine, tanto da raggiungere livelli di utilizzazione pari al 97%, mentre la CAI era maggiormente impegnata sul lato del noleggio master, gestendo altresì sistemi avanzati. Martin Tuchmann, presidente e dirigente in capo della Interpool, ha dichiarato: "Siamo lieti di unire le nostre forze a quelle della CAI, la cui flotta containerizzata è tra le più recenti del settore ed è gestita mediante uno dei sistemi operativi informatici più avanzati del mondo". Prevedibilmente la fusione comporterà altresì economie di scala; Ogawa, presidente della CAI, ha dichiarato: "Riteniamo che le flotte containerizzate combinate di 650.000 TEU metteranno in grado la CAI e la Interpool di aumentare le capacità concorrenziali e di assicurare ai loro clienti un servizio a livello mondiale più esteso e flessibile".

Tutto bene, ma che cosa accadrebbe nel caso in cui le fusioni non avvenissero o le acquisizioni non potessero effettuarsi? A proposito della Interpool in precedenza si era detto che era in trattative per una fusione con la Cronos Containers. Quest'ultima società, peraltro, in quel momento (febbraio 1997) cominciò ad avere problemi di natura finanziaria molto pubblicizzati. Commenta Brocato: "Sì, abbiamo problemi ma siamo sopravvissuti grazie alle eccellenti relazioni da tempo stabilite. Non abbiamo perso una virgola dell'attività a causa di azioni concrete o dicerie".

Il messaggio è semplice e potrebbe essere supportato dai risultati della società nel 1997, attesi alla fine del 1998. Il fatto è che la Cronos - a prescindere dai problemi documentati - "opera bene".

Sfortunatamente per la Cronos, le acquisizioni di altre società, come pure di containers, non sono possibili a causa del rimborso in atto dei mutui stipulati con una delle sue banche investitrici. Brocato, tuttavia, sperava di poter annunciare per luglio un accordo che potrebbe una volta di più condurre ad un'espansione della società. Ha dichiarato infatti: "Potremmo essere interessati ad acquisizioni o fusioni ma onestamente i prezzi sul mercato al momento sono molto alti".

Quanto ai contenitori, Brocato spera di comprarne alla fine di quest'anno e ha affermato che nel caso sia possibile la Cronos acquisterà 30.000 unità per lo più di tipo speciale e sicuramente non del tipo alto 8 piedi e 6 pollici: "Penso che nessuno costruirà più contenitori di quella altezza. Saranno tutti high cubes: questo è ciò che vogliono i clienti".

Oltre alle fusioni, quali sono le altre strategie che i noleggiatori seguono nella propria attività? Le risposte sono varie. Hoelter della Textainer ha dichiarato: "Noi cerchiamo di farci trovare pronti e reattivi. E' la nostra specialità".

L'informatica-telematica è tenuta in grande considerazione da Ward, Brocato, Hoelter e Gutterson. Anche la concentrazione sulle attività primarie è importante. Se le fusioni e l'adeguamento al nuovo mercato costituiscano la corretta strategia a lungo termine, è difficile prevederlo. Nel prossimo paio d'anni questo approccio potrà certamente aiutare i noleggiatori a riprendersi dalle brutte annate del 1996 e del 1997 ed a incrementare i profitti. Tuttavia, resta da vedere se i noleggiatori riusciranno a tornare definitivamente alla situazione dei bei vecchi tempi.
