I 30 anni della MSC

Gianluigi Aponte e la MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Co) hanno fatto molta strada negli ultimi 30 anni. Fondata nel 1970 da Aponte con 5.000 dollari ed una sola nave portarinfuse di 3.000 tonnellate s.l., la MSC con sede a Ginevra è ora il quarto vettore di contenitori a livello mondiale in termini di capacità in spazi-containers impiegata. E, dall'iniziale attenzione ai traffici nord/sud, la MSC è emersa quale vero e proprio soggetto globale.

Aponte è stato, e continua ad essere, l'elemento di spinta che sta dietro alla compagnia di navigazione, la sua cultura che la contraddistingue ed il modo in cui essa è cresciuta. Anche se nel suo cuore è ancora un armatore, egli è orgoglioso del fatto che, oltre a gestire il suo impero globale - ed a differenza di molti dei suoi pari - è in grado (ed in effetti lo fa) di fornire consigli pratici ai comandanti delle navi della MSC, quando gli viene richiesto.

Come Aponte ha confidato alla rivista Containerisation International, "io sono il presidente ed il primo dirigente, ma una cosa è sicura e cioè che sono un professionista del ramo, dal momento che sono stato un comandante di nave. Ne capisco di motori, ne capisco di cose commerciali. Di certo sono molto creativo e sono in gamba. Tutti i sistemi della nostra compagnia sono stati realizzati da me, sistemi di controllo od altro, e - di conseguenza - io ritengo che, una volta che si possegga tale background (che la maggior parte dei miei dirigenti possiede), certamente si possa sempre fare il meglio di quello che va fatto nel proprio settore. Non penso che potremo riuscire a cambiare il mondo marittimo od ottenere risultati migliori di quelli dei nostri colleghi, ma di sicuro facciamo il meglio possibile".

Come le statistiche selezionate della MSC indicano, fare "il meglio possibile" significa che la MSC ha movimentato circa 1,8 milioni di TEU nel 1999. Essa gestisce 128 portacontainers con una capacità complessiva di spazi-containers pari a 225.000 TEU, oltre il 60% dei quali sono navi di proprietà, mentre il resto viene noleggiato a tempo determinato. Inoltre, per conto della MSC sono sotto ordinazione altri 76.000 TEU di capacità, con consegna prevista nei prossimi due anni.

Inizialmente la MSC è cresciuta mediante l'accorta acquisizione di tonnellaggio di seconda mano, ma poi ha infranto questa tradizione nel 1994 allorquando ha ordinato due nuove costruzioni da 3.500 TEU per i traffici Europa/Asia, sebbene la compagnia sia pronta a tornare sul mercato di seconda mano nel caso se ne presenti la necessità.

Ci sono poche zone che la MSC non serve. Essa scala 174 porti che essa definisce in questo modo: "81 servizi primari di linea diretti e 55 servizi settimanali combinati". Questa diffusione è stata resa possibile dall'uso di una serie di centri di snodo strategici, che Aponte elenca così: Freeport (Bahamas), New York, Anversa, Felixtowe, Las Palmas, Valencia, La Spezia, Pireo, Durban, Abidjan, Jebel Ali (Dubai), Chiwan e Sidney. Inoltre, recentemente si è aggiunto alla lista il porto di Salalah, nell'Oman. E' significativo il fatto che il vettore sia forte specialmente nei traffici nord/sud. E, a differenza di molti dei suoi rivali globali, dispone solamente di allacciamenti singoli e settimanali nei traffici Asia/Europa e transpacifici.

Il successo finanziario della MSC non può essere quantificato poiché si tratta di una società privata, appartenente ad Aponte, che ha intenzione di farla restare tale. Alla richiesta da parte di un intervistatore di una qualche indicazione in merito ad introiti e profitti, la riposta è stato un cortese ma fermo "no" da parte sua. Tuttavia, è stato anche pronto a commentare: "Ciò che posso dirle, è che abbiamo cominciato da zero investendo 5.000 dollari al momento della costituzione della società e che siamo dove siamo solamente grazie al reinvestimento dei nostri profitti".

La precisazione di Aponte è significativa, in quanto sottolinea ciò che distingue la MSC da molti dei suoi principali concorrenti: essa è arrivata dov'è solamente mediante una crescita organica, e non attraverso fusioni e/o acquisizioni. Alla richiesta di spiegare come abbia fatto la MSC a crescere con tanto successo, Aponte ha risposto semplicemente: "Penso che sia dovuto all'amore per il lavoro che faccio e ad un sacco di dedizione e di lavoro duro".

Sollecitato ad entrare nei dettagli, Aponte aggiunge: "La rapidità della crescita penso che sia dovuta in gran parte all'avere preso le decisioni giuste, perché, se di tanto in tanto si commettono errori, la crescita rallenta. Ritengo che la pressione su di noi fosse tale che non potevamo permetterci di commettere errori… A dire la verità, non ricordo di avere mai fatto degli sbagli e questo è qualcosa che alla fine accelera la velocità di crescita".

Secondo Aponte, gli errori possono essere evitati se si è sotto pressione. "Io credo tantissimo nella pressione e penso che maggiore è la pressione, meno sbagli si fanno. Nella nostra società cerchiamo di ingenerare una pressione su di noi e questo stimola, come dire, lo spirito e ci aiuta a non commettere errori… La mia filosofia è che la gente deve essere indaffarata e che quando non lo è non produce risultati, perché io penso che l'essere umano lavori bene solo quando è sotto pressione ed indaffarato". Per Aponte e la sua squadra dirigenziale ciò significa giornate lavorative standard di almeno 10-11 ore ed oltre se necessario.

L'etica del lavoro duro di Aponte senza dubbio spiega perché, date le dimensioni delle sue operazioni, la MSC sia ancora una società relativamente piccola. Ci sono solo 200 persone a Ginevra ed a livello mondiale il personale ammonta a 10.000 unità (equipaggi delle navi compresi). Secondo Aponte, il 90% circa dei 350 uffici della MSC in tutto il mondo viene controllato da lì.

L'appartenere ad una squadra così relativamente piccola e sotto pressione non ha comportato un massiccio ricambio del personale; piuttosto, il contrario. L'esperienza di Aponte, condivisa da molti dei suoi dirigenti anziani, vale a dire le origini nella cittadina di Sorrento nell'Italia meridionale, i periodi di tempo passati in mare, seguiti da turni di lavoro in una serie di uffici a terra, ha creato una cultura distintiva nella MSC ed una lealtà aziendale di cui Aponte ovviamente è assai orgoglioso.

"Sapete, i dirigenti di cui dispongo ed il personale alle mie dipendenze sono proprio la gente che mi piace avere e non penso che lo stesso personale potrebbe adattarsi ad una compagnia di navigazione diversa dalla MSC, dandole tanto quanto dà nella MSC" spiega Aponte, il quale poi aggiunge: "La mia sensazione è che la gente deve stare in questa compagnia perché gli piaccio io, gli piace la compagnia, mi rispettano e rispettano la compagnia. A loro piace ciò che la compagnia gli dà in termini di professionalità e personalità ed io penso che a questo riguardo la compagnia dia tanto; e si tratta di cosa di grande valore per loro. Io non penso che possano andare da qualche altra parte poiché altrove non possono trovare le stesse cose, dato che in una grande compagnia è molto difficile alla fin fine avere contatti con il primo dirigente, mentre io parlo con chiunque".

La chiara identità della MSC, l'istinto di direzione ed il desiderio di restare flessibili sono le ragioni fornite da Aponte a giustificazione della ferma volontà della compagnia di navigazione di non entrare a far parte di alleanze. Ad esempio, si rammenterà che la MSC inizialmente aveva partecipato ai traffici Europa/Asia nel 1996 con la Norasia Line e la HMM (Hyundai Merchant Marine). Due anni dopo essa decise di fare da sola. Ora, secondo Aponte, la cooperazione con altre linee di navigazione è limitata ad uno scambio di spazi-containers e ad un accordo di partenze coordinate con la Maersk SeaLand in ordine al traffico Australia/Asia, alla cooperazione con la Beacon sulla rotta Europa/Africa Orientale e ad un accordo con il Lloyd Triestino (Evergreen) e la Delmas per l'Africa Occidentale. Nell'ambito degli attuali mutamenti in atto nel settore dell'Atlantico, sarà abbandonato il noleggio di spazi-containers transatlantico con la HMM.

"Abbiamo iniziato in quel modo ed ora è troppo tardi per cambiare" spiega Aponte, aggiungendo: "Ma io, se appena fosse possibile, non cambierei proprio nulla. Finché è possibile farlo, ci piace restare indipendenti e far sì che i nostri servizi non debbano dipendere dalla politica dei consorzi, dai continui cambiamenti e così via. Ciò ci consente altresì di progettare una identità maggiormente distinta per i nostri clienti". Aponte sottolinea che, se la MSC fosse stata in un consorzio, allora forse avrebbe dovuto avere più personale "appunto per far fronte alle riunioni, alle regole, ai regolamenti ed alla complessità" che accompagnano la partecipazione a tali consorzi.

La MSC adesso fa parte di almeno sette conferenze ed accordi di discussione, ma non è sempre stato così. Tradizionalmente, la compagnia si è sempre defilata da tali patti. Secondo Aponte, la ragione è di tipo puramente storico. "Al momento della nostra costituzione nel 1970, c'erano varie conferenze. Erano molto ben affermate ed era difficile entrare a farne parte. Le conferenze trattavano con la gente o permettevano alla gente di aggregarsi a loro solamente se si trattava di gente affermata oppure che aveva un ruolo importante nel contesto dei traffici in cui esse operavano. All'inizio, noi non eravamo conosciuti, né costituivamo una minaccia per alcuno, e di conseguenza nessuno ci invitava ad aggregarci ad una conferenza. Questa è la vera ragione per cui non siamo tanto assidui alle conferenze".

Tuttavia, dal momento che la MSC è diventata un nome nel suo settore, l'atteggiamento di Aponte nei confronti di tali accordi è diventato più morbido ed ora egli ritiene sempre più che "sia molto importante essere in una conferenza" se "si vuole avere un ruolo nel settore marittimo" ed essere in grado di "discutere i problemi con i colleghi". Opina Aponte: "Non si può stare da soli e seguire quello che fa la conferenza. E' facile stare fuori dalla conferenza, ma io credo che arrivi un momento nella vita in cui la gente deve assumersi le proprie responsabilità, specialmente quando si riveste un ruolo molto importante nel mondo marittimo. Perciò, io penso che sia venuto il momento per noi di partecipare sempre più alla vita dello shipping e, quindi, di partecipare alle conferenze laddove sia possibile". In tale contesto ha indicato che la MSC "nel prossimo futuro" potrebbe entrare a far parte della conferenza dall'Europa al Medio Oriente.

Un motivo che potrebbe spiegare questa nuova simpatia di Aponte nei confronti delle conferenze è rappresentato dalle sue preoccupazioni in ordine al livello generale delle tariffe di nolo. Pur non volendo fare commenti circa la possibilità che le tariffe siano o meno troppo basse per assicurare profitti ai vettori, egli tuttavia ha detto spontaneamente: "Qui non si fanno miracoli. Se la nave ha un costo ed il rifornimento ha un costo e la gestione ha un costo, questi costi devono essere recuperati sulla tariffa di nolo, a meno che non ci sia una crisi com'è avvenuto negli ultimi anni, allorquando c'è stato un eccesso di tonnellaggio, ed allora questi parametri non hanno importanza; in questo caso bisogna proprio scegliere. Ma se i parametri dell'offerta e della domanda di spazio sulle navi restano quelli che sono, in altre parole non c'è eccesso di tonnellaggio per il futuro, ovvero il tonnellaggio crescerà insieme alla crescita dei traffici a livello mondiale, io penso che le tariffe di nolo debbano aumentare".

La sua preoccupazione consiste nel fatto che quelle sopra citate continuino ad essere le basi dell'attività e che, soprattutto, qualcuno regolamenti adeguatamente gli accordi della MSC con i propri clienti. Così, per Aponte, l'OSRA (la legge statunitense di riforma del settore marittimo del 1998), entrata in vigore a maggio del 1999, ha avuto un impatto trascurabile sulle relazioni della MSC con i caricatori: "Non è cambiato nulla, poiché tutto ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno è che una certa tariffa di nolo sopravviva. Tutti quanti abbiamo i nostri costi e la legge può anche aver modificato qualcosa nel senso desiderato dai caricatori, ma alla fin fine noi abbiamo bisogno di ottenere quella tariffa di nolo che ci consenta di operare con profitto".

E pertanto, come reagiranno i clienti della MSC all'aumento delle tariffe? Aponte ci ha pensato su prima di rispondere: "I clienti capiranno il problema… Se il mercato è forte e noi possiamo mettere in atto l'aumento, lo accetteranno. Se il mercato è debole, non potremo dar corso agli aumenti… Noi dovremo abbassare le tariffe e loro faranno il possibile per spremerci fino all'ultimo dollaro… E' una prassi triste per la mia mentalità. Io preferirei un approccio diverso, ma, sfortunatamente, oggi le cose stanno così".

Che cosa significa questo per le relazioni a lungo termine con i principali clienti che desiderano discutere tutta una serie di argomenti, quali i servizi a valore aggiunto nonché le tariffe? Aponte si lamenta: "Sfortunatamente, tutte queste cose vengono date per scontate. Il servizio, tutto quanto, dev'essere di prima classe: è ciò che si aspettano. In più, si aspettano la tariffa migliore". Per Aponte, la fornitura di ciò che lui definisce "infrastrutture" per i clienti (vale a dire, servizi quali il collegamento via computer con la MSC od il tracking dei containers) rappresenta un qualcosa da perseguire se si vuole che la MSC resti competitiva. Come dice lui: "Non vi è dubbio che nel nostro settore non si possa dire: fornisco solo il 90% di quello che il settore richiede. Se si è una compagnia professionale bisogna fornire il 100%. Qualsiasi cosa i nostri concorrenti forniscano, anche noi lo facciamo".

Ad esempio, l'intero argomento dell'informatica viene considerato da Aponte (che, detto per inciso, non ha un p.c. sulla scrivania) come "uno strumento, e nient'altro", sebbene riconosca che si tratti di un'area molto importante in cui la MSC, come chiunque altro, sta investendo in misura notevole. Ma quanto? "Preferirei non fornire queste cifre" è stata la sua risposta.

Allo stesso modo, i contratti globali sono un altro sviluppo sulla cresta dell'onda del mercato cui la MSC dovrà far fronte, sebbene Aponte abbia delle evidenti riserve al riguardo. "E' un incubo dover trattare sulla base di contratti globali, ma, poiché essi esistono, non possiamo evitarli. Dobbiamo adeguarci a loro. E sono un incubo perché i clienti ci mandano un volume spesso così (e fa il gesto con la mano) con 3.000 destinazioni e noi dobbiamo segnare una tariffa di nolo vicino a ciascuna destinazione… Per noi, però, un impegno è un impegno: se dobbiamo avere a che fare con le loro esigenze, lo facciamo" ha dichiarato. A suo giudizio, inoltre, tali contratti sono un altro fattore che ha comportato il ribasso delle tariffe.

Quest'atteggiamento "da duri" dei caricatori è stato recentemente sperimentato dalla MSC quando essa ha perso un contratto per il trasporto della produzione della Volkswagen dal Mediterraneo alla Costa Orientale del Sudamerica. Questa attività per conto del produttore tedesco di autoveicoli era stata una delle ragioni principali per cui la MSC era entrata in tale mercato. Come conferma Aponte, "ci siamo serviti dei carichi della Volkswagen per dare inizio al servizio. Quando siamo partiti, ci avevano promesso 500 TEU ad ogni partenza, ma questi TEU non si sono mai materializzati: alla fine, trasportavamo dai 120 ai 150 TEU per viaggio. In seguito, siamo stati semplicemente sostituiti con un altro vettore che ha praticato una tariffa più bassa; come ho detto prima, i nostri clienti non tengono mai conto del servizio che gli viene fornito, dei sacrifici che si fanno, del contributo che gli viene dato: si limitano giusto a scegliere il vettore meno caro. Dal momento che non potevamo adeguare il nostro servizio alle loro richieste, abbiamo finito per perdere il carico".

I prezzi sono sempre stati attentamente controllati da Ginevra ed Aponte si è servito dell'esperienza con la Volkswagen quale esempio per sottolineare come la MSC non sia pronta ad abbassare le tariffe solamente per tenersi il carico. Precisa infatti: "Quando ci imbattiamo in caricatori che richiedono tariffe antieconomiche, preferiamo non prendere il carico e ridurre le dimensioni delle navi che utilizziamo in un dato traffico, il che per noi conduce allo stesso risultato". Nel contesto dei traffici Europa/Costa Orientale del Sudamerica, la MSC non ha dovuto impiegare navi più piccole perché la perdita di 150 TEU per viaggio "non è stata così significativa".

Anche il modo in cui la Volkswagen opera, con organizzazione in proprio della logistica, è stato citato da Aponte al fine di illustrare quello che a suo giudizio rappresenta un'altra tendenza del settore. Contrariamente a quanto si ritiene diffusamente tra gli spedizionieri ed alcuni vettori marittimi, egli è convinto che, man mano che le multinazionali diventeranno più grandi mediante fusioni, acquisizioni e crescita organica, esse avranno bisogno di sviluppare capacità proprie di logistica al fine di far fronte ai problemi logistici giorno per giorno. "Stando così le cose, non vi è alcun vantaggio per loro nel servirsi di un terzo, poiché i terzi non possono offrire loro niente di meglio" prevede.

Tale scenario pone in rilievo quello che egli considera il ruolo decisivo della MSC nella catena dell'offerta: l'essere un vettore marittimo efficiente e dai costi razionali. Si tratta di un'attività che continuerà ad essere al centro di quello che fa la MSC. Al fine di ottenere questo risultato, si continuerà ad investire in navi, come dimostra l'attuale registro delle ordinazioni della compagnia di navigazione.

La MSC non è stato il primo vettore marittimo a servirsi di grosse portacontenitori; essa, infatti, si è attenuta alle navi "minori" per più tempo di molti dei suoi rivali, ma ora dispone di 10 unità da 6.730 TEU (cinque delle quali sono state acquisite mediante noleggio a lungo termine) la cui consegna inizierà a giugno del 2001 e verrà completata l'anno successivo. Inoltre, è prevista la consegna di due navi da 4.350 TEU (rispettivamente, ad agosto 2000 e giugno 2001).

Tutto questo nuovo tonnellaggio, comprese le navi da 6.730 TEU, saranno impiegate nei traffici Asia/Europa, laddove la MSC attualmente effettua un singolo servizio settimanale con 10 navi da 3.400 a 4.100 TEU. Le nuove navi saranno utilizzate dalla MSC per dare inizio ad un nuovo collegamento su questa rotta? Aponte ribatte: "No, no e no" ma aggiunge "naturalmente, non posso dire ciò che andremo a fare con quelle navi. Tuttavia, le navi più piccole (quelle dell'Asia/Europa) rimpiazzeranno certe navi nel transpacifico ed altre unità in altri traffici in cui avremo bisogno di navi più grandi". In altre parole, le navi defluiranno da un traffico all'altro a seconda delle esigenze della domanda, com'è tradizione alla MSC.

La MSC come intende riempire la propria capacità in più nel traffico Asia/Europa? "Abbiamo dei programmi al riguardo, ma non posso dire in che modo lo faremo; peraltro, la riempiremo" replica Aponte. E che dire del Sud-Est asiatico, che la MSC non copre così ampiamente come alcuni dei suoi rivali? "Certamente, potremo coprirlo in modo un po' più estensivo allorquando avremo a disposizione navi più grandi" ha detto Aponte "ma io penso che la crescita dei traffici dell'Estremo Oriente continuerà al punto tale da assorbire non solo il nostro tonnellaggio aggiuntivo ma tutto quanto il tonnellaggio aggiuntivo che giungerà sul mercato. Pertanto, non credo che dovremo fare sforzi particolari per riempire le navi… Non si dimentichi che fisicamente si tratta di 6.700 containers, il che significa in pratica 6.000 TEU, e che già riempiamo completamente 4.100 TEU".

La MSC ha cominciato un servizio settimanale transpacifico lo scorso anno, che a giudizio di Aponte "ha avuto un debutto assai riuscito, come ci aspettavamo", ma poi ha ammesso che "il successo toccherà a tutti". Si è trattato dell'ultima importante connessione della rete globale della linea di navigazione nonché la prova - se ve ne fosse bisogno - del crescente interesse della MSC nel mercato asiatico in generale ed in Cina in particolare. "Penso che la futura espansione della nostra compagnia avverrà certamente in questa parte del mondo, che è poi la zona dove stanno i containers ed i volumi" conferma.

Essendo riluttante a rivelare qualsiasi cosa che possa procurare vantaggi ai propri concorrenti, Aponte si è rifiutato di fornire altre notizie in ordine ai nuovi servizi sulla rampa di lancio, salvo spiegare che alcuni sono in programma e che al momento dell'intervista (metà maggio) un nuovo servizio settimanale intra-mediterraneo era pronto per l'inaugurazione a giugno. Servendosi di navi di seconda mano da circa 750 TEU, esso avrebbe dovuto toccare Valencia, Alessandria ed uno o più israeliani, nonché Limassol. L'intento è quello di mescolare i carichi locali mediterranei con il traffico degli altri servizi della MSC correlati a Valencia.

Aponte è convinto che la MSC, al fine di conservare il proprio stato di vettore marittimo di punta, dovrà investire in terminals. Il processo è già cominciato, dal momento che il vettore è socio dello stivatore Hessenatie di Anversa nello sviluppo di un'infrastruttura da 1,25 milioni di TEU/anno presso il porto belga, del quale la MSC costituisce il maggior cliente singolo. Questo progetto, il cui completamento è previsto per il 2002, rappresenta il volto futuro della MSC. Spiega Aponte: "La nostra attività ci richiede di avere interessi nei principali porti in cui facciamo scalo e la tendenza è che in futuro dovremo sempre tentare di scegliere quale nostro centro di snodo ovvero quali porti principali quegli scali in cui abbiamo una partecipazione azionaria".

Quanto ai programmi per nuovi centri di snodo in futuro, Aponte ha assicurato che la rete attuale è sufficiente per le necessità del momento della MSC, sebbene egli abbia altresì fatto notare che "se la crescita dovesse continuare, forse dovremmo cercarci qualche altro centro di snodo". Dove? Replica Aponte: "Anche se lo sapessi non lo direi, ma in tutta onestà non lo so… ad ogni modo non è prudente dire in quale hub si vuole andare, perché in quel caso le tariffe crescono".

La MSC è davvero una creatura di Aponte. E' lui che l'ha resa ciò che è; pertanto, chi la rileverà quando alla fine deciderà di ritirarsi? "Ci sono i miei ragazzi. Ho una figlia di 27 anni, Alexa, e poi c'è mio figlio Diego di 24. Tutti e due lavorano nella compagnia e sono già stati addestrati. Sono molto, molto professionali. Penso che siano in grado di assicurare il futuro… Non mi sono mai sognato, nemmeno per un secondo, che i miei ragazzi potessero fare qualcosa d'altro, ma per loro sarà un fardello assai pesante perché questa è un'attività davvero difficile" ha dichiarato.

Guardando al futuro, Aponte ha concluso: "Sono ottimista, ma si sa che il problema di questa attività è che c'è uno scenario in continuo mutamento in cui bisogna migliorare le proprie navi tutti i momenti, e lo stesso vale per i propri computers, le proprie agenzie, i propri containers. Si sa che è una corsa continua. Non ci si può mai fermare, non ci si può mai rilassare e dire: abbiamo ottenuto quello che volevamo, ora riposiamoci". Sembra che per Aponte e la MSC la pressione sarà sempre una costante.
