I porti mondiali: la Cina al top

Ancora una volta, Hong Kong è risultato il maggior porto containerizzato del mondo nel 2004, avendo movimentato 21.932.000 TEU stimati. La persistenza della sua condizione di primo in classifica deve molto al fiorire del Delta del Fiume delle Perle ed al flusso di esportazioni che fuoriesce dalle migliaia di fabbriche di quella regione.

Tuttavia, il suo rivale più prossimo Shenzen - che comprende Chiwan, Shekou e Yantian - continua a crescere ad un ritmo molto più veloce, avendo aggiunto oltre 3 milioni di TEU lo scorso anno. Per un numero sempre maggiore di caricatori della Cina meridionale, queste porte d'accesso sono adesso l'opzione preferita, non ultimo per il fatto che esse spesso funzionano in modo più economico rispetto a Hong Kong.

Generalmente, come mostra la tabella, ci sono stati pochi spostamenti verso l'alto o verso il basso nella classifica di primi 30 porti, sebbene sia da rimarcare che Dubai ha fatto il proprio ingresso nei primi 10 scalzando Anversa, con una crescita del 24,8% sino a 6.428.883 TEU, mentre Jeddah è entrato per la prima volta in classifica tra i primi 30. Singapore è risultato secondo e molto vicino a Hong Kong, per quanto lo scalo vicino di Tanjung Pelepas abbia in realtà fatto segnare un guadagno percentuale più alto.

Il maggior incremento singolo nei traffici in termini di TEU lo scorso anno è stato quello di Shanghai, dove nel 2004 è stato registrato un aumento di circa 3,3 milioni di TEU. L'apparentemente inesorabile salita di Shanghai non mostra segni di cedimento, malgrado il fatto che i suoi crescenti volumi potrebbero addurre notevoli pressioni sulle infrastrutture esistenti. Dal momento che la prima fase dell'ambizioso sviluppo di Yangshan dovrebbe essere ultimata nel 2006, vi saranno poche limitazioni alla crescita di Shanghai ed appare ragionevole presumere che nel giro di pochi anni esso possa diventare il maggior porto containerizzato del mondo.

Chi si è distinto per avere conseguito la maggiore percentuale di crescita nel 2004 è stato un altro porto cinese, Ningbo, laddove il traffico in termini di TEU è aumentato di uno sbalorditivo 44,5%, il che ne ha comportato l'avanzamento dalla 22a alla 17a posizione. Ningbo, che è a solo circa 200 km da Shanghai, è in continua evoluzione, dal momento che due importanti compagnie di navigazione, la OOCL e la Lloyd Triestino, consociata della Evergreen Group, hanno effettuato investimenti nello sviluppo di ormeggi presso il porto di Beilun.

Shanghai, Shenzen e Ningbo non sono stati i soli porti cinesi ad avere fatto registrare importanti incrementi lo scorso anno. Qingdao, Tianjin, Ghangzhou e Xiamen hanno tutti fatto registrare una notevole crescita, mentre Dalian sembra destinato ad aggregarsi alla classifica dei primi 30 nel corso del 2005. Secondo i dati di ci-online, i volumi di TEU presso questo porto cinese settentrionale sono aumentati di un impressionante 32,4% nel 2004 sino a 2.211.200 TEU, facendo sì che Dalian salisse dal 44' al 34' posto nella classifica dei traffici containerizzati di ci-online.

Tra gli altri porti che stanno bussando alla porta dei primi 30 vi sono Jawaharlal Nehru (con 2.360.000 TEU stimati), Nagoya (con 2.280.000 TEU ed un aumento del 9,9%), Salalah (2.228.546 TEU ed aumento dell'11,45%) e Colombo (2.220.573 TEU con aumento del 13,3%). E' significativo come nessuno dei porti collocati nella classifica 2004 dei traffici containerizzati di ci-online abbia fatto registrare un calo dei risultati, sebbene alcuni, come Gioia Tauro, abbiano fatto registrare modesti incrementi.

Ciò che forse sorprende è che sembra che la maggior parte dei porti cinesi abbiano conseguito una crescita fenomenale senza avere sperimentato nessuno dei notevoli problemi di intasamento che hanno afflitto la maggior parte dei porti nel 2004, segnatamente alcuni sulla Costa Occidentale degli Stati Uniti, in Europa settentrionale e meridionale ed in infrastrutture quali Jawaharlal Nehru in India.

Potrebbe darsi che, quali porti specialisti in esportazioni (almeno, per quanto riguarda i contenitori), i terminal cinesi non debbano sopportare i problemi dei porti di importazione che ricevono e depositano i carichi in contenitori nei propri piazzali sino a quando gli importatori od i loro clienti non sono pronti a raccoglierli?

Questo è stato sicuramente un fattore che ha contribuito alla cronica congestione lo scorso anno nelle porte d'accesso californiane meridionali di Los Angeles e Long Beach e presso molte infrastrutture in Europa e che deve ancora essere risolto. Chiaramente, questa situazione dovrà essere affrontata, dal momento che le considerazioni di natura programmatoria ed ambientale rendono sempre più difficile per i terminals in Europa e Nordamerica lo sviluppo di nuove infrastrutture per tenere il ritmo con la crescita a doppia cifra cui molti hanno assistito lo scorso anno e che probabilmente conseguiranno anche in futuro.
