I primi 20 vettori marittimi mondiali: investimenti accorti?

Il confronto analitico tra il 2002 e l'annata precedente, effettuato da Containerisation International, rivela pochi cambiamenti in ordine al controllo della flotta globale di navi cellulari. Rispetto al totale di 5,8 milioni di TEU in servizio a livello globale, 4,75 milioni di TEU, vale a dire l'82% della capacità, sono al momento operativi nei servizi dei primi 20 vettori in classifica. Ciò rappresenta una diminuzione di meno dell'1% rispetto al 2001.

Tuttavia, nella tabella possono riscontrarsi diversi cambiamenti a sorpresa. Tra loro, si possono annoverare la prima volta di un vettore specializzato nei traffici interasiatici (la Pacific International Lines) e lo scavalcamento del precedente secondo operatore mondiale PONL (P&O Nedlloyd) da parte del vettore che lo scorso anno era piazzato al numero cinque, cioè la MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Co).

Il tonnellaggio della classe post-panamax ha fatto la parte del leone per quanto riguarda gli spazi-containers introdotti in servizio nel 2002, dato che 35 di tali navi hanno aggiunto una capacità di 216.033 TEU, ovvero il 40% del totale. Ciò rappresenta una leggera riduzione rispetto al 2001, quando poco più della metà degli slot aggiunti erano stati procurati da questi giganti. La maggior parte di loro sono stati posizionati nei traffici Asia/Europa, ingenerando un effetto-cascata negli altri mercati.

Inutile dire che lo AP Moller Group (che comprende Maersk Sealand, Safmarine/Portlink e la recentemente acquisita Torm Lines) ha conservato la prima posizione. La compagnia di navigazione controlla il 47% di spazi-containers in più del secondo vettore in classifica ed ora effettua operazioni con una flotta dalla capacità combinata di 773.931 TEU.

La AP Moller ha introdotto 12 nuove navi nelle proprie reti Maersk Sealand e Safmarine nel corso dell'anno, compresa una varietà di unità di proprietà (3 "classe S" da 6.600 TEU, 2 da 4.300 TEU e 1 da 2.840 TEU), mentre diverse navi da 1.150 a 2.500 TEU sono state noleggiate a lungo termine da proprietari tedeschi di navi non di linea.

La reintroduzione di due servizi nei principali traffici est-ovest, cancellati nel 2001 a causa del cronico eccesso di capacità, ha procurato un ulteriore impiego per le navi che erano state spodestate dalle nuove consegne o, nel caso del tonnellaggio noleggiato, sarebbero state riconsegnate per fine noleggio.

Ci sono buone notizie per il vettore numero cinque dello scorso anno, la MSC, ora piazzato in seconda posizione, che ha fatto retrocedere di un posto la PONL. La flotta complementare della MSC è aumentata quest'anno di uno sbalorditivo 40%, sino all'impressionante cifra di 413.814 TEU.

La sua rimarchevole crescita negli ultimi 12 mesi è per lo più dovuta ad otto unità post-panamax da 6.700 TEU che devono esserle consegnate, le quali vanno ad aggiungersi alle due navi-gemelle consegnate nel 2001 per il suo servizio solitario Asia/Europa. Questo allacciamento era in precedenza equipaggiato con un misto di navi delle classi da 2.500 a 4.000 TEU. Inoltre, la MSC è stata un astuto acquirente di moderne navi di seconda mano nel 2002. Tra le tante, essa ha comprato 3 unità da 4.400 TEU dismesse dalla National Shipping Corporation of Saudi Arabia a seguito del suo ritiro dal servizio di linea nello scorso mese di maggio.

Anche i miglioramenti del servizio relativi agli altri principali programmi di viaggio della MSC hanno avuto bisogno di navi più grandi. In particolare, il suo servizio Europa-Sudamerica è stato fatto passare dalle unità da 2.000 TEU alle navi da 3.500-4.000 TEU nel 2002, mentre un tonnellaggio dalle medesime dimensioni è diventato il cavallo di battaglia dei traffici Europa-Mediterraneo della MSC.

La fulminea crescita della MSC sino alla seconda posizione è probabilmente un evento destinato a durare a lungo termine, se si considera che la compagnia di navigazione ha il maggiore registro di ordinazioni arretrate, fatta eccezione per la Maersk Sealand. Altre 7 navi da 6.750 TEU dovrebbero essere commissionate l'anno prossimo e nel 2004. Inoltre, 4 navi panamax da 4.100 TEU sono previste in consegna alla fine di quest'anno, unitamente a sei navi leggermente più piccole con consegna nel 2003/4. E' probabile che questo tonnellaggio venga utilizzato per incrementare la presenza transpacifica relativamente modesta della MSC, unitamente ad una seconda tratta Asia/Europa.

In calo alla terza posizione c'è la PONL, che ha aumentato la propria capacità in termini di spazi-containers di 26.645 TEU rispetto al 2001. La compagnia con sede nel Regno Unito ha avuto un'annata relativamente tranquilla per quanto riguarda le consegne di navi ed il suo aumento di capacità è principalmente dovuto all'introduzione di navi noleggiate più grandi nei suoi servizi dell'emisfero meridionale. La consegna di nuove portacontainers reefer integrali, che rimpiazzano le più vecchie navi da box con-air nei traffici Europa/Australasia, ha rappresentato il mutamento maggiormente significativo nella flotta della compagnia nel 2002. Si sa che la PONL stava prendendo in considerazione l'ipotesi di effettuare ordinazioni per altre navi post-panamax nell'ambito del suo impegno nella Grand Alliance. E' probabile che queste navi vadano a sostituire le unità panamax costruite negli anni '80.

Nel contempo, l'Evergreen Group, che comprende la Evergreen, la Hatsu (la sua consociata con sede nel Regno Unito di recente costituzione) ed il Lloyd Triestino, ha recentemente fuso la sua importante consociata interasiatica Uniglory nel marchio Evergreen. Il gruppo, che ora è piazzato al quarto posto nella classifica dei principali vettori di Containerisation International, ha incrementato la capacità della propria flotta di navi del 15% nel 2002. L'aumento degli spazi-containers è dovuto ad una nuova serie di navi post-panamax da 6.332 TEU, denominate "tipo E", unitamente al noleggio di navi più grandi per i servizi interasiatici. Quello che prima era un vettore "fai da te" è anche entrato in diversi accordi di noleggio di spazi-containers con i rivali Maersk Sealand e New World Alliance nello sforzo di migliorare i tempi di viaggio in determinati mercati-chiave, in particolar modo la Cina. La Evergreen ha un arretrato di ordinazioni di naviglio relativamente esiguo, sebbene abbia intenzione di dismettere la propria flotta di navi del tipo G a bassa velocità costruite negli anni '80 (20 unità da 2.728 TEU). Ci si aspetta che il gruppo effettui presto ordinazioni relative a navi più grandi e veloci che consentiranno la sostituzione di queste navi nei prossimi cinque anni.

A causa dei problemi finanziari verificatisi in Corea del Sud, tutti e due i principali vettori con sede in quel paese sono stati particolarmente tranquilli sul piano dell'espansione della flotta. La Hanjin (unitamente alla consociata Senator Lines con sede in Germania) ha fatto registrare un modesto incremento dell'1% nella capacità di spazi-containers, mentre la flotta della HMM (Hyundai Merchant Marine) ha subito una diminuzione del 13%. L'arretrato di ordinazioni di entrambi i vettori è limitato ad una manciata di navi di proprietà tedesca noleggiate a lungo termine.

Anche la APL, socio della HMM della NWA (New World Alliance) ha fatto registrare una riduzione della capacità di spazi-containers nel 2002. Malgrado l'introduzione di diverse nuove navi, tra cui 3 unità da 5.500 TEU, la regolazione della capacità di spazi-containers tra i soci della NWA (APL, HMM e MOL) ha comportato il noleggio alla MOL di diverse grandi navi gestite dalla APL.

La stessa MOL è risalita dalla tredicesima alla nona posizione nel 2002, in seguito alla introduzione di 5 unità da 6.400 TEU per il servizio nel mercato Asia/Europa nel 2002, unitamente all'aggiunta delle navi in precedenza gestite dalla APL.

Sebbene ciò abbia comportato differenze minime in ordine alla loro posizione in classifica, entrambi i principali operatori cinesi, la Coscon e la CSCL (China Shipping Container Lines), hanno notevolmente incrementato la propria capacità in termini di spazi-containers nel 2002. In particolare, la CSCL ha introdotto in servizio 4 navi da 4.253 TEU noleggiati a lungo termine dal proprietario canadese Seaspan and Ofer Brothers, le quali inizialmente sono state utilizzate per migliorare il suo servizio Asia/Europa, per poi essere trasferite nel transpacifico, allorquando nel traffico Asia/Europa sono state dirottate navi post-panamax.

In un'epoca in cui ben pochi vettori ottengono profitti, una grossa percentuale delle navi immesse in servizio nel 2002 è stata procurata - e la cosa non sorprende - mediante noleggi a lungo termine o accordi di leasing per mezzo di istituzioni che finanziano le navi. Ad esempio, le unità da 6.332 TEU del "tipo E" del gruppo Evergreen aggregate nel 2002 sono state finanziate da un noleggiatore con sede nel Regno Unito nell'ambito del sistema britannico delle imposte sul tonnellaggio.

Tuttavia, un vettore marittimo che finanzia le proprie navi, piuttosto di utilizzare metodi alternativi per incrementare la capacità della flotta, è la CP Ships, in 10a posizione. La compagnia di navigazione con sede nel Regno Unito, che in precedenza possedeva poche navi proprie, ha aggiunto un'altra unità del suo tipo più grande, sotto forma della Contship Aurora da 4.100 TEU, la prima di tre navi gemelle per i propri servizi congiunti con la PONL nei traffici Europa/Australasia. La CP Ships ha un arretrato di ordinazioni di proprietà per 4 navi da 3.200 TEU e 2 navi da 4.100 TEU per le proprie consociate Lykes e Canada Maritime, da consegnarsi nel 2003.

Anche la CP Ships continua a crescere tramite acquisizioni, avendo rilevato le attività containerizzate della compagnia di navigazione italiana Italia di Navigazione del gruppo d'Amico. Ciò di per se stesso ha incrementato la flotta della CP Ships di 15 navi per una capacità complessiva di 23.200 TEU.

Il vettore con sede a Singapore PIL (Pacific International Lines), specialista nei traffici interasiatici e col Medio Oriente, è entrato per le prima volta nella classifica dei primi 20, rimpiazzando il gruppo Hamburg Sud, ora classificato al 21° posto. La PIL ha dato impulso nel 2002 ad un certo numero di propri servizi con navi più grandi, sia noleggiate che di proprietà, e per la fine dell'anno è in procinto di introdurre 3 navi da 2.600 TEU che andranno ad aggiungersi ad una nave gemella immessa in servizio all'inizio del 2002.

In conclusione, data la crescente attrazione esercitata dalle navi del tipo post-panamax, è diventato molto difficile per i nuovi soggetti fare ingresso nella classifica dei primi 20, se non mediante fusioni ed acquisizioni. Il prezzo d'ingresso è alto: una tipica nave post-panamax può costare oltre 70 milioni di dollari USA.

E la ricompensa per tali sforzi al momento non sembrerebbe così allettante, se bisogna basarsi sui recenti risultati finanziari annunciati da parecchi operatori di punta. La Maersk Sealand, la PONL e la APL sono tra coloro di cui si sa che attualmente sono in perdita, e diversi altri sembrano destinati ad imitarli.

E proprio qui sta il problema. I caricatori affermano di voler lavorare con meno vettori, richiedendo quelli in grado di fornire una gamma più ampia di servizi. Peraltro, come ha dimostrato Martin Stopford in occasione della conferenza di Containerisation International all'inizio dell'anno, le navi post-panamax presentano minori economie di scala. Ciononostante, l'emersione della MSC quale secondo vettore marittimo a livello mondiale nel 2002 suggerisce come almeno una compagnia di navigazione sia stata in grado di sviluppare una formula segreta di successo nell'arena globale di linea, anche se nulla si è potuto sapere circa la capacità di realizzare profitti.
