La classifica delle prime 20 compagnie di navigazione containerizzate del mondo

Per quanto la classifica finale del 1997 si sia chiusa con le prime due posizione relativamente ravvicinate, nel 1998 non vi è stata alcuna disputa per designare il campione delle operazioni containerizzate, dal momento che la Maersk ha portato il suo vantaggio sul suo rivale più immediato, la Evergreen, a 65.886 TEU. Nel 1997, il divario era stato di appena 4.009 TEU.

E' impressionante come il vettore con sede a Copenhagen controlli quasi il 25% di tonnellaggio in più rispetto alla Evergreen e circa sei volte il numero degli spazi-containers della Cho Yang, classificata in ventesima posizione. E si tratta di una posizione che la Maersk intende consolidare ulteriormente. Attualmente, il vettore è secondo nella classifica delle nuove costruzioni con 80.000 TEU complessivamente ordinati ed in consegna prima della fine del 2000.

La Evergreen è rimasta seconda, con una capacità di flotta pari a 276.555 TEU ed un aumento del 21,1% rispetto ai risultati del 1997, mentre la P&O Nedlloyd ha conservato la terza piazza. La compagnia anglo-olandese, che ha rilevato l'operatore britannico Blue Star Line lo scorso mese di marzo, ha fatto registrare un'espansione del 13% quanto a spazi-containers sino a 250.858 TEU. Tuttavia, la maggior parte dell'incremento è dovuta all'immissione in servizio di navi più grandi sulle proprie rotte Europa/Asia (4 unità da 6.690 TEU) e Mediterraneo/Australasia (4 unità di capacità pari a 2.890 TEU).

Alla caccia del terzetto di testa, in quarta posizione, troviamo la MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) che ha migliorato la propria classifica del 1997 di tre posti. La capacità in termini di spazi-containers della MSC è aumentata dai 154.185 TEU del 1997 ai 220.745 TEU del 1998, con un balzo del 43,2%. Rispetto all'ultima analisi "Indagine sulle principali 20 compagnie di navigazione di linea del mondo" di Containerisation International, la linea con sede a Ginevra ha acquistato 4 navi da 2.700 TEU dalla Hanjin allo scopo di ampliare i propri servizi transatlantici e ha acquistato/noleggiato un certo numero di navi al fine di supportare le sue sempre più numerose connessioni dall'Europa al Sudamerica, all'Asia ed all'Australasia. Inoltre, la molto pubblicizzata separazione dalla Norasia rispetto al servizio di linea primaria Europa/Asia ha comportato il noleggio temporaneo, da parte della MSC, di tre navi dalla capacità di 3.400 TEU presso il suo ex socio allo scopo di mantenere la frequenza di una partenza settimanale. In appena cinque anni, la flotta della MSC si è quadruplicata.

Inoltre, la MSC sta aggiungendo altro tonnellaggio a quello esistente. Attualmente, il vettore ha sotto ordinazione 2 navi dalla capacità di 3.950 TEU presso la Hanjin Heavy Industries (Corea del Sud), che dovrebbero essere consegnate nel 1999. I programmi di acquisizioni e noleggi del vettore fino a questo momento sono sconosciuti.

Al quinto posto si trova la Hanjin Shipping che, a dispetto di un anno difficile, si è data ancora da fare allo scopo di migliorare la propria posizione in classifica.

La capacità complessiva di bordo del vettore sud-coreano, che comprende anche il 70% di quella della propria partecipata DSR-Senator Lines, ammontava a 213.018 TEU, con un incremento approssimativo del 22% rispetto ai propri risultati del 1997.

Quelle che hanno dato via libera alla MSC ed alla Hanjin nella parte superiore della classifica sono state la Sea-Land e la Cosco, tutte e due in calo di due posizioni, essendosi attestate rispettivamente al sesto ed al settimo posto. Si tratta della classifica più bassa mai conseguita della Sea-Land nei 15 anni in cui è stata effettuata l'indagine di Containerisation International. E, per di più, la maggiore compagnia di servizi containerizzati di linea degli Stati Uniti non ha navi sotto ordinazione, sebbene il suo nome sia stato associato a grosse serie di ordinazioni di navi effettuate da armatori quali la Costamare Shipping del Pireo (5 navi da 6.200 TEU) e la Conti Reederei (5 unità da 5.500 TEU). Né gli armatori in questione né la Sea-Land hanno voluto commentare tali voci.

Il calo della Cosco, con tutta probabilità, è destinato a durare poco, dal momento che questa linea di navigazione dispone di un cospicuo registro di ordinazioni, in particolar modo per quanto riguarda le navi di medie dimensioni (v. Tabella 2). Queste ultime sono destinate ad ampliare la presenza del vettore in vari mercati locali, quali i traffici interasiatici. E' anche probabile che la linea di navigazione ordini altro tonnellaggio post-Panamax per i propri servizi primari est-ovest, che attualmente vengono offerti sulla base di semplici accordi di coordinamento reciproco degli spazi a bordo con la K Line e la Yangming.

Subito dopo le prime cinque posizioni, significativi incrementi di capacità sono stati ottenuti dalla NYK Line/TSK (27,9%), dalla Hapag-Lloyd (24%) e dalla APL (21,4%).

A dispetto della buona prestazione della NYK/TSK, essa non è stata in grado di evitare alla maggiore compagnia di servizi containerizzati di linea del Giappone lo scivolamento di un posto in classifica (ora è in nona posizione). Ed è verosimile che la compagnia si trovi a dover subire ulteriori pressioni. La sua recente serie di 5 navi post-Panamax dalla capacità di 5.700 TEU è stata portata a termine completamente ed il vettore adesso non ha più ordinazioni in corso.

In completo contrasto, la Hapag-Lloyd, che ha messo in opera altre tre delle proprie navi della classe Panamax da 4.500 TEU, è balzata in avanti recuperando quasi tutto il terreno perduto nel 1997. Attualmente, la Hapag-Lloyd occupa la 15a posizione in classifica, con un miglioramento di 4 posti rispetto al 1997.

Inoltre, i dirigenti della più grande compagnia di navigazione di linea tedesca sono decisi a "crescere più rapidamente di quanto accada al settore containerizzato di linea nel suo complesso. Quest'anno miriamo ad un incremento del 30% dei volumi di traffico" ha dichiarato Gunther Casjens, dirigente in capo della divisione di linea della compagnia. "E' importantissimo per il futuro della nostra compagnia che noi si diventi un operatore di maggiori dimensioni".

Al fine di supportare questa strategia di crescita, la Hapag-Lloyd sta effettuando ingenti investimenti in nuovo tonnellaggio. L'attuale registro ordinazioni del vettore comprende 7 navi da 4.800 TEU per complessivi 33.600 TEU. E, scostandosi dalla tradizionale prassi del vettore che prescrive la proprietà di tutti i propri beni, alcune delle nuove navi sono state assoggettate a contratti di noleggio a lungo termine. La Costamare Shipping, ad esempio, deterrà tre di queste navi che sono in fase di allestimento presso la Hyundai Heavy Industries in Sud Corea con consegna entro la fine del 2000; in quel momento, la Hapag-Lloyd gestirà 17 navi in grado di caricare dai 4.200 ai 4.800 TEU.

La scalata in classifica della APL è stata il risultato del suo rilevamento ad opera della NOL (Neptune Orient Lines) e della fusione delle operazioni di linea delle due compagnie di navigazione sotto il marchio commerciale APL.

Lo scorso anno ha fatto altresì registrare il completamento del programma di ritonnellaggio della NOL. Nel 1997, la NOL era 15a in classifica, mentre la APL era 18a.

E' significativo come la APL/NOL gestisca una delle più grandi flotte di portacontenitori in grado di trasportare 3.500 TEU ed oltre, con ben 29 navi (130.000 TEU) raggruppate in questa categoria di dimensioni. Infatti, la APL era stata la pioniera delle portacontenitori post-Panamax con il varo della Presidenti Truman nel 1988. La compagnia di navigazione oggi possiede 14 navi di questa classe.

Anche la CP Ships, che nel 1997 per la prima volta era riuscita ad entrare nella classifica dei primi venti, ha fatto registrare un'altra annata di crescita sostenuta e la capacità della sua flotta è aumentata quasi del 24% sino a più di 105.000 TEU. La compagnia - la cui direzione è nel Regno Unito - che ha rilevato la Ivaran Lines a maggio di quest'anno e che recentemente ha annunciato l'acquisto della ANZDL (Australia-New Zealand Direct Line) con sede a Santa Ana, in California, ha scalato la classifica dal 16° posto dell'anno scorso al 13° posto di quest'anno.

Tuttavia, poiché l'accordo relativo alla ANZDL doveva ancora essere perfezionato al momento dell'indagine, la capacità della flotta di quell'operatore non è stata inclusa nel conteggio totale della capacità di bordo della CP Ships. Se lo si fosse fatto, la flotta della CP Ships si sarebbe ingrandita di altre nove navi e di spazi per 7.080 TEU. Ciò sarebbe bastato alla CP Ships per superare comodamente la Zim Israel Navigation ed andare ad occupare la 12a posizione.

I trasporti della CP Ships su base annuale ora ammontano a ben più di un milione di TEU, con un massiccio incremento del 400% rispetto ai suoi carichi di quattro anni fa. Nel 1998, la compagnia si aspetta di movimentare almeno 1,1 milioni di TEU (v. Tabella 3). Ci si aspetta che l'acquisizione della ANZDL incrementi gli introiti ed i trasporti della CP Ships di un ulteriore 15%.

"L'acquisto della ANZDL contribuisce ad accrescere la piattaforma regionale australasiatica che abbiamo creato allorquando abbiamo acquisito la Contship Containerlines nell'ottobre 1997" ha dichiarato Ray Miles, dirigente in capo della CP Ships. "Con la ANZDL che fa parte del gruppo, la CP Ships adesso dominerà il campo in tre mercati regionali chiave (Nord Atlantico, America Latina ed Australasia)".

Inoltre, è improbabile che la ANZDL sia l'ultimo articolo nella nota della spesa della CP Ships, dal momento che Miles e la sua squadra sono alla ricerca di altri rinforzi regionali, miglioramenti di servizio ed economie di scala per il gruppo.

Hanno disceso la classifica nel 1998 la Mitsui OSK Lines, la HMM (Hyundai Merchant Marine), la Zim Israel Navigation e la CMA-CGM, le quali tutte quante hanno perso un posto rispetto alle proprie posizioni del 1997 (v. Tabella 1). Ma in ognuno di questi casi le dimensioni delle rispettive flotte sono aumentate, dal momento che la ZIM ha ampliato la propria capacità del 13,5% sino a più di 111.000 TEU nel corso degli ultimi 12 mesi.

La HMM e la CMA-CGM, peraltro, hanno fatto registrare tassi di crescita più modesti nel 1998, dal momento che le loro capacità di bordo sono aumentate rispettivamente del 3,3% (3.686 TEU) e del 2,2% (1.942 TEU).

Al contrario, la Yangming ha dovuto segnare un calo nel conteggio dei propri spazi-containers ed è scivolata di sei posizioni in classifica, attestandosi al 18° posto. La capacità in spazi-containers del vettore taiwanese è diminuita dai 96.145 TEU del 1997 ai 78.840 TEU del 1998, dal momento che la Yangming ha noleggiato a terzi parte del proprio tonnellaggio e ha restituito ai loro proprietari alcune navi noleggiate.

Ci si aspetta una modesta ripresa nei prossimi due anni, poiché la Yangming immetterà in servizio 5 navi post-Panamax da 5.200 TEU in corso di allestimento presso la Hyundai Heavy Industries (tre unità) e la taiwanese CSBC (China ShipBuilding Corp) (due unità). Le navi in discorso sono destinate al servizio Europa/Asia del vettore.

Per quanto riguarda gli altri operatori, la Cho Yang è scomparsa dalla classifica dei primi venti ed è stata rimpiazzata dalla SCL (Safmarine & CMBT Lines), recentemente ribattezzata Safmarine Container Lines, in seguito alla recente acquisizione - da parte della compagnia di navigazione sudafricana - della quota azionaria della CMB nella CMBT. Nel 1998, il quantitativo di spazi-containers della SCL è aumentato del 10% circa sino a poco più di 55.000 TEU. Ciò è stato in gran parte il risultato dell'incremento - ad opera del vettore - dei propri traffici Nord Europa/Mediterraneo-Subcontinente indiano per mezzo di navi con capacità di carico superiore ai 2.800 TEU.

Nel frattempo la UASC è rientrata in classifica, al 19° posto, dopo un'assenza di quattro anni. Ciò è stato interamente dovuto alla presa in consegna - da parte dell'operatore - di 8 navi da 3.800 TEU destinate all'impiego nel suo servizio Europa/Medio Oriente/Asia, che viene ora effettuato nell'ambito dell'accordo United Alliance con la Cho Yang Shipping, la DSR-Senator e la Hanjin. Altre due unità dovrebbero essere consegnate entro quest'anno.

Al contrario di molti altri operatori presenti nella classifica dei primi 20, la flotta della UASC comprende un grosso numero di rinfusiere multiruolo. Specchio di questa situazione è il fatto che le 31 navi della Classe K (con capacità massima di carico pari a 525 TEU) siano state riclassificate in modo tale che la loro capacità di carico media sia pari ad appena 200 TEU per viaggio.

Quanto al futuro, è probabile che la classifica dei primi 20 sia caratterizzata da una relativa stabilità, con pochi cambiamenti (e di natura minore) in vista. L'analisi della classifica delle nuove costruzioni, ad esempio, che è stata compilata sulla base delle ordinazioni note effettuate dalle compagnie di linea e non delle contrattazioni degli armatori in relazione al mercato del noleggio (alcune delle quali si riferiscono ad ordinazioni di notevoli dimensioni), rivela come anche quest'ultima sia dominata dai maggiori operatori.

La Evergreen guida la fila con 89.404 TEU (26 navi), mentre la Maersk (con 81.256 TEU) è al secondo posto e la P&ON è al terzo, con nove navi per complessivi 39.630 TEU.

Un considerevole quantitativo del nuovo tonnellaggio contrattato da questi tre vettori è destinato alle esigenze di rimpiazzo, dal momento che è probabile che la Evergreen metta in vendita od in disarmo diverse delle proprie navi della classe L (da 1.810 TEU) e persino della classe G (da 2.728 TEU), allorquando tutte e 13 le sue nuove navi della classe U post-Panamax entreranno in servizio entro la metà del 2001.

Anche la Maersk sostituirà alcune delle proprie navi più piccole impiegate nelle linee primarie, sebbene il suo programma di nuove costruzioni sia finalizzato alla sostituzione delle navi noleggiate con unità di proprietà. Questo è il caso specifico del contratto stipulato con la CSBC per 6 navi della classe feeder da 1.092 TEU.

Secondo la P&ON, il suo nuovo tonnellaggio andrà a rimpiazzare le navi della prima e della seconda generazione; le 2 unità da 2.890 TEU rappresenteranno l'ultima fase del miglioramento dei servizi relativi alla rotta Mediterraneo/Australasia del vettore. Nel contempo, le 5 navi post-Panamax da 5.000 TEU in corso di costruzione presso Kavaerner e Aker-MTV, in Germania, saranno impiegate sulle reti di servizio sia del transpacifico che Europa/Asia della Grand Alliance.

"L'ordinazione si adatta bene al nostro programma di sostituzioni finalizzato all'immissione nella flotta di nuovo naviglio moderno ed alla dismissione delle vecchie navi" ha dichiarato Tim Harris, dirigente in capo della P&ON. "Le nuove unità comporteranno notevoli riduzioni dei costi operativi per TEU".

Per quanto riguarda gli altri, la MSC ha ordinato 2 navi da 3.950 TEU alla Hanjin Heavy Industries, mentre il registro ordinazioni della MOL comprende 5 navi da 2.000 TEU destinate alle esigenze dei suoi traffici Asia/Costa Orientale Sudamericana. Nel contempo, le ordinazioni effettuate dalla National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia riguardano 3 navi da 4.400 TEU. Queste ultime navi dovrebbero essere immesse nel servizio Europa/Asia del vettore nel corso del 2000. Il collegamento viene espletato in collaborazione con la CMA-CGM e la Norasia Line.

La Norasia, di per se stessa, sta aggregando altre navi alle proprie operazioni. Nel complesso, otto navi molto veloci (25 nodi) dalla capacità di 1.400 TEU sono in corso di consegna; le prime due di esse sono state introdotte nel servizio della compagnia di navigazione recentemente inaugurato sulla tratta Nord Europa/Montreal.

Notevoli contratti relativi a nuove costruzioni sono stati stipulati anche da vettori quali la Kien Hung Shipping, la MISC (Malaysian International Shipping Corp) e la OT Africa Line, ma il tonnellaggio in consegna a questi operatori in nessun caso sarà sufficiente per fargli conseguire un posto nella classifica dei primi 20 operatori.

Di modo che, al di fuori del gruppo di testa, quali sono i vettori che più si stanno adoperando per entrare in classifica? A dispetto della crisi valutaria asiatica, alcuni specialisti dell'interasiatico, quali la Wan hai Lines e la RCL (Regional Container Lines), hanno fatto registrare un'altra buona annata e hanno ottenuto significativi incrementi delle capacità delle proprie flotte e delle movimentazioni.

Attualmente, la Wan Hai è il principale candidato alla promozione, con una flotta dalla capacità di circa 42.000 TEU. Nel 1998, il vettore taiwanese ha siglato accordi relativi a partenze coordinate ed a scambi di spazi-containers con un certo numero di operatori di linea primaria, tra cui la MOL e la HMM. La linea ha inoltre cominciato ad offrire ai propri clienti il servizio da e per il Medio Oriente ed il sub-continente indiano per la prima volta.

Inoltre, il vettore, che detiene altresì il 47% della Madrigal-Wan Hai Lines, sta cercando di entrare nei traffici a lungo raggio. Ci si aspetta che questo vettore possa fare il proprio ingresso nella classifica dei primi 20 operatori entro i prossimi due anni.

Tuttavia, la RCL necessita di maggiore potenza di fuoco, dal momento che l'attuale ammontare di spazi-containers è pari a poco più di 25.000 TEU.

In Europa, la Hamburg Sud The Shipping Group sta guadagnando terreno e potrebbe entrare nella classifica dei principali vettori l'anno prossimo. Con una capacità di flotta pari a 52.836 TEU (32 navi), l'operatore è attestato al 22° posto, subito dopo la Cho Yang.

Lo scorso anno, la Hamburg Sud ha acquistato tre compagnie di navigazione: la Empresa de Navegação Aliança, la South Seas Steamship - che effettua i servizi di linea del gruppo norvegese Thor Dahl - e le tratte commerciali Australia/Nuova Zelanda-Fiji/Tahiti della Barbican Line. Complessivamente, queste acquisizioni hanno dato quale risultato per il gruppo la disponibilità operativa di altre sette navi ed il controllo di 10.728 TEU in più. Inoltre, la Hamburg Sud ha fallito di poco l'acquisto della BSL.

Non sono state escluse ulteriori acquisizioni e/o associazioni strategiche, poiché la Hamburg Sud è alla ricerca delle dimensioni e della scala atte a farle conservare lo stato di operatore del settore containerizzato di linea.

La Tabella 3 fornisce un'indicazione delle movimentazioni dei principali vettori nel 1997 e nel 1998. Dal momento che non tutti gli operatori sono disposti a divulgare tali particolari, dov'era possibile sono state effettuate delle stime. La tabella mostra come la Cosco guidi la fila con più di 3,2 milioni di TEU (vuoti compresi), seguita da presso dalla Evergreen/Uniglory e dalla Sea-Land, ciascuna con tre milioni di TEU di trasporti annui. Subito dopo, segue un gruppo di vettori, tra cui la Maersk Line, la P&ON e la Hanjin, raccolti nella fascia dei 2/3 milioni di TEU.

La crescita più rapida viene fatta registrare da quelle compagnie che hanno partecipato ad operazioni di acquisizione, come la CP Ships e la APL, e/o hanno fatto la propria entrata in nuovi traffici. In particolare, la HMM, la Yangming e la OOCL hanno tratto vantaggio dal loro accresciuto impegno nei traffici interasiatici. La OOCL, inoltre, ha allargato la propria rete di linee primarie facendo nuovamente ingresso nel traffico Mediterraneo/Asia ed inaugurando nuovi servizi dal bacino del Mediterraneo agli Stati Uniti. Questi ultimi sono stati realizzati mediante la sua partecipazione alla Grand Alliance.

Nel contempo, i volumi della Hapag-Lloyd hanno fatto registrare negli ultimi anni una crescita impressionante in seguito alla sua decisione di allacciare i suoi traffici secondari alle proprie rotte di linea primaria. L'operatore è adesso un importante soggetto nel settore Nord Europa/Mediterraneo, ad esempio, laddove carica containers sui viaggi delle navi adibite all'Europa/Asia e li trasborda a Marsaxlokk.

I primi 20 vettori del mondo si stanno ritagliando una fetta sempre più grossa dell'attività di trasporto marittimo containerizzato, schiacciando così gli specializzati nei traffici locali. Si tratta di una tendenza destinata a continuare, dal momento che i principali operatori seguitano a rafforzare le proprie reti di servizio ed a mietere le economie di scala derivanti dall'impiego di navi più grandi. Il vettore da cinque milioni di TEU all'anno non sarà ancora per molto tempo una figura astratta.
